It's an interesting question. The universities are not paying for NIL.

However, and this is a big "however," this booster contribution effort does drain the ability of a university to get direct contributions from those boosters. The boosters aren't an unlimited funding source for all initiatives. But, if a booster wants to contribute to the Hunter Dickinson NIL collective, the university doesn't have a lot of power to tell boosters not to.

Yeah, and therefore I think it becomes a Pot A,B,C,D,E carousel.  Smart enough people to figure that out so it's really the same in the end.

If I'm Julian Reese, I'm following this very closely and looking at when the portal deadline is.

Yep, and even if you do the Isaiah Wong thing and end up staying, you can probably squeeze them for more with the threat

FWIW ...

So, its full open market basically.  Nothing really skirts the line.  You would think at some point one of these schools are going to try to get a another school for "breaking the rules".  But there arent really rules so there's that.  It really is crazy.  I want to know the highest salary "cap" in college basketball.  Or I should say the highest paid roster.

Kinda feels like whichever fan base wins the bidding war for Dickinson will be disappointed this time next year.

They should all tell him for every day he delays he loses 100k

The university isn’t paying anything. They are getting out of this whole thing for free.
also, don’t trust half of these numbers you see.
NIL and how all this works is still so confusing for many and things get conflated.

I understand the NIL marketplace just fine. I also know that “The University isn’t paying anything”. I also know that schools and their peeps have never been above board when it comes to big time recruiting. There are a lot of ways money gets shuffled around. I think some schools are currently being more clever about it than others. And as far as trusting the numbers… I get it. You have legitimate NIL, and collectives, and other (shoe guys/agents) I believe Oscar got a guarantee of 2 million from Kentucky (it’s NIL affiliates and it’s peeps). I think that he over shot that by all the available things out there and that is why the 3-4 million number is circulating. With him being the returning player of the year, you’d think he be the capstone. He, by himself isn’t a huge NIKE draw as his NBA potential is limited, but Kentucky and Duke get the majority of the top NIKE recruits and Nike attention.

Anyway, long story short, I don’t trust the Universities operating in $$$$$$$ not to be pulling all the strings they can to do all of this legally. Money goes round and round.

Don't know if it's been mentioned earlier:

Tylor Perry, North Texas , 5'11" guard.  17.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.1 apg.  44/41/87 shooter.  If you've seen North Texas play, averaging 17 ppg is like averaging 20+ other places because of how slow their pace is.  Would not be surprised to see him follow his coach to Texas Tech.

No disrespect, truly. While at a concept level I think you get it, I think you are missing nuance. You said is it worth the investment. It is not their money at all and they wouldn’t have it without the player. Again, the best NIL deals have zero to do with the university and to do with how marketable the athlete is.
don’t overlook the top NIL earner being a female gymnast and not paid form any collective, donor etc. that is so important as we move forward.

The scenario regarding the female gymnast is legitimately how NIL should work. She is legitimately repping big brands in commercials, magazines, social media etc. Her deals are all real based on her image

the men’s big sports like basketball and football big money is almost entirely fake, money being handed to them for doing nothing in most cases
