I'd put Ramey in the Jon Octeus type category and the Boilermakers finished 12-6 in conference with Octeus as their lead guard.  But if Arizona or Duke is offering him lead guard minutes plus a nice NIL chunk, I don't see him at Purdue.

Agreed .. they have little to no chance at Ramey. But where does that leave them? I see a lot of 'but Painter is a good coach' posts and he is, but he has also had a tenth and twelfth place B1G finish in the last ten years.

I mean, if we saw a guard quartet of Morton, Loyer, Newman, and Braden Smith at any other school we'd be laughing hard. And that's it! There's no real likelihood of an addition.

As it was last year, Purdue underachieved and was bad defensively, largely because of a lack of team quickness and defensive recognition. This year they are going to be minus their four guards who played the most minutes from last year, and their big that played at crunch time because Edey doesn't move his feet well. And they've added nothing.

Seems like a bit of an indictment on Painter's ability to find a portal replacement.

Sure. Ramey = Octeus. BTW, Octeus was backed up by PJ Thompson and Bryson Scott.

How about without Ramey? Morton is not a point and most certainly does not = Octeus.

Newman’s a career 35.3% from 3 on 3.5 shots per game in college. Last year he shot 32% from 3. Kopp and Johnson both shot better than that last year. Maybe he’s a shooter, but he hasn’t been a maker in college.

Purdue Fans are rationalizing their guard line up the way we did the last couple years or Archie. That’s a problem. When you need 3 of 4 players to overachieve you are setting yourselves up for failure 

 

On the flip for the first time in a bit we have a 5 player line up of upper classmen that will be functional.  We know what it is.  TG and MK being starters.  Is this our best self. No it’s not but it’s a decent functioning line up.  But then on our bench we have two ultra talented 5 stars coming in and several returning players who if they put it all together they will add to our whole. 
 

Purdue is a bad team that if everything goes well they can be decent. We are a good team that if like 50% of our players get it together we will be damn good.

If Newman was a really good shooter and better than any of IU's 3-point shooters, he wouldn't have been getting so many DNP--CDs last season.  He got unseated by Ethan Morton in the lineup, an unathletic wing whose main job was to only take wide open shots and not screw up.

I saw Newman play several times in high school and thought two things:  1.  He's more athletic than people give him credit for and 2. He was given an undeserved reputation as a natural shooter.  Newman had to work to get his shot and made a huge leap between his sophomore and junior year as a shooter, but he didn't have a great stroke.  Teams backed off of him a lot because of the fact he could blow by them....he ended up with a lion's share of open threes for that reason and he did well with using that time to set up.  Unfortunately he's not going to get that time to set up in college because he now isn't just going to beat his opponent with athleticism on the drive.

So the question is... Who is now better off? Indiana going with Armaan Franklin or Purdue going with Newman?

Not only does Purdue have limited guard depth/overall talent, but Painter has also almost exclusively utilized a 3 guard lineup for all of his tenure at Purdue, which will just magnify their issues.

In re: PU guards discussion, I think Ethan Morton’s pretty good. But can we agree that you could summarize lots about the Archie era by recalling that he recruited Ethan Morton as though he was gonna solve lots of backcourt problems for IU?

Archie Miller also went after a number of highly rated guards, including Darius Garland and DJ Carlton. Archie never could land a top quality point guard. Rob Phinisee was the best he could do and he was always trying to get someone better than Rob.

Safe to say his career has not gone as he (or his dad) had envisioned. 

Hope it works out for him.

I doubt it would have gone much better for him here, but I can't help but wonder if the constant threat of 5 star one-and-done kids at UK just was too much for him to get comfortable and find a groove.

IMO, Painter has mishandled Newman to the point of killing his chances of success.
