Class of '66 Old Fart

(2022) - C Shawn Phillips to NC State

Recommended Posts

Alec Lasley -

Indiana basketball will have ample minutes available in the frontcourt in 2021, but even more when the class of 2022 enrolls. Because of that, Archie Miller has made it a priority to jump into a few recruitments early.

Shawn Phillips (Dayton, OH) is one of those prospects that has received an early offer from the Hoosiers. From Archie Miller's old stomping grounds, Phillips has already emerged as one of the top centers in the entire 2022 class and even more so in the midwest. Phillips already unofficially visited Indiana for its home game against Maryland in January.

Though just finishing his sophomore season, Phillips was a critical member of his Belmont High season this past year as he averaged 12.8 points and 11.3 rebounds. That play has already attributed to a handful of offers in addition to Indiana, including programs such as Auburn, Ohio State, Xavier, and Cincinnati amongst others.

As basketball is seeing a trend towards big men who can stretch the floor, Phillips remains a traditional center. Already 6-foot-10 and 230 pounds, Phillips is an absolute load to handle in the paint. His combination of size and strength makes him nearly unstoppable any time he touches the ball on the block. Last season he shot 65 percent from the field, showing his reluctance to leave the paint but furthermore his shear dominance within five feet of the basket.

Phillips does have a few post moves such as a wide drop-step and ability to turn over his left shoulder for a subtle hook shot. Outside of those, he uses his strength to bully defenders.

The best part about his game is the lack of plays the offense needs to run for him. Phillips averaged 4.8 offensive rebounds per game as a sophomore which realistically could convert into at least eight easy points per game. Having someone that impactful without having drawn up plays for him makes an offense that much more effective.

His size is not only impactful offensively, but even more on the the defensive end. A true shot-blocker, Phillips averaged 2.8 blocks per game last season and even affected more shot attempts than that.

Phillips is ranked the No. 42 prospect in the 2022 class.

So he has pretty much given up on any facade of attending a real high school for the next two years?

They've already got their team roster published per Brad Galli a Detroit sports anchor:

Emoni Bates is leaving Ypsilanti Lincoln to create Ypsi Prep Academy.  Here's the roster: Emoni Bates, Dillon Hunter, Javaughn Hannah, Shawn Phillips, Traemon Norris, Genesis Kemp, John Mcrear, Jaden Adkins, Orlando Lovejoy

I hope I'm wrong, but this whole thing looks like a major sham in the making.

Yup -- as criticized as it has been when the parent of a top athlete creates an AAU summer team, the creation of an entire sham high school takes it to a whole new level.

Prolific Prep look out, here come Ypsi Academy!

Alex Lasley's comments on Phillips from last night's game.

2022 Indiana target Shawn Phillips finished with 2 pts and 9 rebounds in a 78-71 loss to Team Sizzle (MN).  Main takeaways tonight:

 - Much bigger than originally thought (closer to 6-11 and 250)

- Terrific rebounder

- Still growing/developing a well-rounded offensive game

Honestly didn't notice him as Bates and Holmgren were both terrific.  Jaden Akins, a Michigan State signee is a point guard in the Izzo mold.  He's an aggressive, athletic bulldog.

Chance to watch Emoni Bates, oh, and Shawn Phillips also on TV next Saturday night.

Ypsi Prep Academy (MI) will play as the club team Bates Fundamentals (MI) this weekend due to the California rules for Sierra Canyon (CA) aka California Basketball Club. The matchup is still expected to be nationally televised on FS1 Saturday night at 9 PM ET.

Ypsi Prep's opponent for last night's game had to be changed and it faced Air Nado (NV) and Michigan recruit '21 Frankie Collins.  Collins actually attends Coronado HS in Las Vegas, but many of these schools are having to play under club names when they go out of state because of virus restrictions in their home state.

Ypsi came away with a 79-74 OT win and Shawn Phillips not Emoni Bates was the star for Ypsi.  Per the box score, Phillips led Ypsi in scoring with 26 pts. on 12-13 FG; 2-7 FT; 20 reb; 1 stl; 1 blk; 2 TO.   Bates got the headlines and the coverage in the Detroit Free Press but was just 6-24 FG and 2-14 on 3s and finished with 19 pts.

This is what the Free Press had to say about Phillips:  Ypsi Prep's Shawn Phillips — a 6-foot-10 center drawing interest from Michigan State who has offers from Ohio State and Indiana — finished with 26 points, 19 rebounds and about a half-dozen dunks.  Phillips had 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting (four dunks) and nine rebounds in the first half.

We've heard so little about him, I find this somewhat surprising.
