Class of '66 Old Fart

IUMS vs. Butler - Tues - 10/16

Recommended Posts

Starting the thread a day early because The Hoosier Network posted a write-up about the game earlier today.  IU (11-2) hosting Butler (3-8-2) at Bill Armstrong Stadium.  Last year in his post-game presser, Coach Yeagley coined the matchup as The Indiana Derby.

Match will be televised on your basic BTN channel starting at 8:00.

Per his interview with BTN Yeagley not pleased with first half. In a way he’s right as despite the 2-0 lead we should have about a 4-0 lead as we have blown some passes in the Butler goal box that should have been tapped in.

Butler is completely the opposite of Maryland with a very competent attack but a very very leaky D and it’s been like that for them for many years. Now it’s worse for them as I said in the preview as they usually can somewhat mitigate their bad D with a good goalie but without that either now they have one of the worse defenses in the country.

Pretty confident in the lead but if there is one team that can erase this lead its Butler (and they did erase 2-0 halftime leads in 13 and 15) as their attack is very strong. Butler to their credit from the beginning has not parked the bus and basically conceded they are going to give up goals and is just trying to match them. So far we have turned everything away or forced prayer shots from outside the box but need to watch it as Butler will keep attacking but will give us plenty of opportunities to score as well and we need to take advantage with another goal or two.

Finally put it away after many blown chances as Glass runs past the Butler defender on a long ball from Swartz into the box and blasts its home from the left side mid box 1 on 1 vs. goalie.

That was fairly easy as we went out and dominated. In some ways I am kind of sorry Butler is so down this year as what is usually a fun rivalry game was kind of an afterthought tonight. Butler is so worried about getting into the Big East Tourney (only top few teams make it in and Bulldogs last) they are really focused on that and did not have their heart in this game like usual. It was also a much smaller crowd than usual given where teams are at as Butler brought almost no fans down this time given how bad they are.

I said this game would probably be like 2012 which was the last bad Butler team combined with a good IU team and game was nearly identical indeed. Like Maryland who is about one good forward away from being really good Butler is one or 2 defenders from being really good.

Moving onto Rutgers who like every sport is really bad at Soccer. In last 3 games we faced a Michigan team who was solid in all facets but not great at anything, a Maryland team who is great on defense but terrible on offense and then tonight we had a Butler team that’s great on offense but terrible on defense. Now with Rutgers we face a team that has Maryland’s offense and Butler’s defense so as long as we play our game and don’t take anything for granted we should have a similar result to tonight.
