When I grabbed a class ring (not sure why we even did that) the person who fit me said the Adams Central Flying Jets and the South Adams Starfires were completely unique and not any other school in the country had either as a mascot/nickname.  I'm not sure if that's true or not, but that's what he said.

And I know guys that went to both of those schools.  Definitely unique nicknames.  Can't believe I forgot about them.

Some others from Illinois are Freeburg Midgets, Centralia Orphans(girls team known as Orphan Annies), Cobden Apple Knockers, Freeport Pretzels

I’m guessing they make pretzels in Freeport, but those others have me at a loss. Flying Jets and Starfires are unique...Orphans and Midgets are much more than unique. Any backstories on why those were chosen?

There is a story behind the orphans. I'll try to find it. The Apple knockers were named because of all the apple orchards in that area. Apples used to be harvested by "knocking" on the trees to get them down. I'm sure there is a story behind the midgets.

A couple more from the Region (like the Hobart Brickies).

Andrean 59ers (Dakich's alma mater; named because it was founded in 1959 and is on 5959 Broadway in Merrillville)

River Forest Ingots (in homage to the nearby steelyards of Gary). If you listen closely when Dr. Richard Kimble is being chased by U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard during the St. Patrick' Day Parade in the 1993 hit "The Fugitive," you can hear the PA announcer mention the River Forest Golden Ingots Marching Band.

My high school was the Kankakee Valley Kougars...other schools would joke that we didn't know how to spell Cougar correctly. Also sometimes would be called "KKK" Valley.

Lol seems pretty intentional
