Indiana Field Hockey Set to Open Season with Hoosier Invitational
 
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– The Indiana Field Hockey program is set to begin their highly anticipated 2022 season this weekend as the host of the Hoosier Invitational.
 
As part of the Invitational, Indiana will host Kent State to open their season and the event on Friday, Aug. 26 at noon. On Saturday, Aug. 27, it will be a neutral battle between Kent State and No. 6 ranked Liberty facing off. Finally, the weekend will close with a noon tilt featuring Indiana and Liberty on Sunday, Aug. 28.
 
The Hoosiers are looking to build upon a highly successful 2021 campaign that included the team's first 10-win season since 2012, two ranked road victories, seven shutout wins, and a Big Ten Tournament bid.
 
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:

• FRIDAY: Kent State enters the season with high expectations after a 12-6 season in 2021.
• The Golden Flashes were voted to finish second in the MAC in the preseason Coaches' poll. 
• The team is led by Maria Cambra Soler – an All-MAC First Team selection in 2021. The senior back had six goals and three assists last season.
• Indiana owns a 4-2 all-time advantage in the series between Kent State, but the Golden Flashes won a year ago, 2-1 in overtime in Kent, Ohio 
• SUNDAY: The Liberty Flames start out the season ranked No. 6 in the country by the NFHCA Division 1 poll after their historic 2021 season where they made it all the way to the NCAA Championship game, before falling short to Northwestern.
• The Flames were 20-3 overall and 7-0 in the BIG EAST a season ago.
• Liberty returns top player Daniella Rhodes, a senior who accounted for 39 points in 2021, totaling 16 goals and seven assists.
• This will be the first ever matchup between Indiana and Liberty in field hockey.

 

 
EARLY ACCOLADES:

• Senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt-junior Sydney Keld were both named Indiana team captains earlier this month.
• This is the first time being named captain at Indiana for both players.
• Keld, junior Jemima Cookson and sophomore Yip van Wonderen were all named to the Big Ten's Preseason Players To Watch List.

 
SCRIMMAGE RECAP:

• Last Friday, Aug. 19, Indiana hosted Ball State for a scrimmage to prepare for the season.
• The Hoosiers looked highly impressive, winning by a 3-0 margin and dominating possession throughout the entire game.
• Three different Hoosiers scored goals, including sophomores Kayla Kiwak and Yip van Wonderen, as well as junior Meghan Dillon.
• Junior Jemima Cookson notched two assists while freshman Jule Hufer and van Wonderen each had one.
• The goalie play was also excellent, as sophomore Arabella Loveridge accounted for six saves, and freshman Nina Faupel made three saves in her first collegiate competition.

 
NEW ADDITIONS:

• The Indiana roster features 10 new players in 2022.
• Eight of the ten newcomers are freshmen, including: Kai Snell, Kylie Dawson, Anna Mozeleski, Jule Hufer, Gabriella Cicuto, Emma Thompson, Cecilia Maixner and Nina Faupel.
• The freshman class includes a mix of five players from the United States and three players from international countries.
• Additionally, Amanda Frank, a sophomore forward joined the team in January 2022 while Lara Mortz, a junior midfielder transferred from Albany to Indiana over the summer.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– The Indiana Field Hockey team has announced the 2023 slate of spirit themes for the upcoming fall season's home games.

The Hoosiers are once again working with the IU Student Athletic Board to maximize the fan experience and environment at Deborah Tobias Field.

The dates of the 2023 home games and their corresponding themes are listed below.

August 20 – Miami (OH) (SCRIMMAGE): Youth Clinic

• Fans in eighth grade or under are invited to join our players pregame for a brief session of fun skills and drills stations.
• The opportunity for autographs and photos with players will be available after the game.
• Appropriate sign-up forms and waivers must be completed prior to participating.
• You can sign up here.

September 24 – James Madison: Pediatric Cancer Awareness & Student Clinic

• Fans are encouraged to wear gold for pediatric cancer awareness.
• Members of the Indiana student body are welcome to learn the sport of field hockey with fun drills and basic instruction after the game.
• The student clinic will take place after the game.

September 29 – Michigan: Pride Game

• Indiana Field Hockey will celebrate inclusivity and acceptance as part of its LGBTQ+ Pride game. 

October 1 – Ohio State: Breast Cancer Awareness

• Fans are encouraged to wear pink for breast cancer awareness. 

October 13 – Iowa: Title IX

• The program will celebrate and commemorate the history of Title IX.
• Prior to the game's start, a PA read will be announced to the crowd discussing the history of the landmark legislation. 

October 27 – Penn State: International Day

• All nationalities will be celebrated and recognized at the game and in the sport of field hockey.
• International players from Indiana and Penn State will be recognized prior to the game's start. 

October 29 – Kent State: Senior Day

• The program's seniors will be honored and recognized pregame.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– Indiana will open its 2023 season with two nationally ranked opponents on the road. The Hoosiers take on Duke to start the season on Friday for the first meeting between both programs since 2013. Indiana will play at Liberty on Sunday in a rematch of last year's contest.
 

NEW YEAR, NEW TEAM:

-It's a new season for Indiana Field Hockey, who is building off a 9-10 season in 2022. The Hoosiers notched nine or more wins in two consecutive seasons (10 wins in 2021) for the first time since 2014-2015.

-The team showed immense promise to start 2022, opening with an 8-4 record before catching the injury bug in the midst of conference play.

-The Hoosiers will look to take a step forward this year with a lot of returning players and some talented additions.
 

THE 2023 HOOSIERS:

-Indiana returns 20 players from last year's roster while only losing five from a season ago. Only one lost player was a routine starter.

-Of those returners, the Hoosiers return eight of their nine top scorers from a season ago.

-Leading scorers: Sydney Keld (6 goals), Jemima Cookson (6 goals), Sofia Arrebola Garcia (5 goals), Yip van Wonderen (3 goals) and Anna Mozeleski (3 goals) are all back for 2023.

-Indiana welcomes eight new faces to the roster in 2023, including seven freshmen and one transfer.

-The freshmen are Kate Longo, Ava Winner, Maddie Olshemski, Javi Baeza, Theresa Ricci, Hannah Riddle and Inés Garcia Prado.

-Three freshmen were former high school teammates of current members of the Indiana roster.

-Olshemski went to Wyoming Seminary College Prep (PA) where Anna Mozeleski attended. Baeza went to Shaker Heights (Ohio) as did junior Maggie Carter. Riddle graduated from Assumption High School (Kentucky) the same high school as Meredith Lee.

-The Hoosiers' one transfer is Sarah Charley. Charley is a graduate student and comes to Bloomington after playing four years at Ohio State.

-Charley enjoyed a fantastic Buckeye career where she was a top scorer in the Big Ten. She led the team with 12 goals in 2022 and posted 25 career scores.

 

CURRENT IN COACHING:

-There is a strong tie between Indiana and Duke's coaching staff dating back over 15 years.

-Duke head coach Pam Bustin has extensive coaching experience with USA Field Hockey. Bustin has served as an assistant coach for Team USA's U19, U21 and senior level teams. She has earned a strong reputation for helping develop the country's top young talent.

-One of those top young players that Bustin helped coach was now Indiana head coach Kayla Bashore. Bashore enjoyed a very successful international career with USA Field Hockey as a two-time Olympian in 2008 and 2012.

-This will be the first time that Bustin and Bashore will face off against one another as head coaches.

-Indiana assistant coach Leah Zellner is in her first season on the Hoosier staff and her first as a collegiate coach.

-Zellner joined the staff in March 2023 after graduating from Iowa in December. Zellner was a five-year, impact player for the Hawkeyes that helped lead the program to major national success.

-Zellner played in 96 career games with 70 starts. She had 15 goals and 10 assists in her career. She put 64.5% of her shots on goal.

-In her time as a Hawkeye, Iowa won two Big Ten regular season championships (2019, 2021), a Big Ten Tournament title (2019) and five NCAA Tournament appearances.

-Iowa reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21.

 

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:

-The Hoosiers open the 2023 season with a tough challenge in a road test with No. 20 Duke, a team who is consistently competing at the national level.

-The Blue Devils are coming off an uncharacteristic 7-11 season.

-Duke's Hannah Miller was recently named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. Miller, a graduate student, was one of 11 players named to the team.

-She recorded 7 goals and 11 assists in 2022. She was the team's leading point scorer with 25 points.

-In the all-time series between Indiana and Duke, the Hoosiers lead it 2-1. The two programs have not met since 2014 when Indiana beat Duke 3-2 in Bloomington. Indiana has never won in Durham before.

-On Sunday, Indiana will face No. 14 Liberty in Lynchburg for the return game after the two teams played in Bloomington in 2022.

-The 2022 matchup was a 2-0 win for the Flames in the season's opening weekend.

-Liberty enjoyed a strong 2022 season where the Flames went 12-8 with a 6-1 conference mark.

-Liberty won the Big East Conference Championship, knocking off Old Dominion, 3-1, in the title game.

-The Flames were defeated in their first NCAA Tournament game, 2-1,  in double overtime by Maryland.

-Liberty is two years removed from reaching the NCAA Tournament Final in 2021.

 

OVERTIME TIDBITS:

-Indiana's Sofia Arrebola Garcia, Sydney Keld and Sarah Charley were named to the Big Ten's preseason Players to Watch list.

-Indiana's 2022 team captains of Keld and Kennedy Reardon are both team captains again in 2023. Senior Jemima Cookson was voted in as a team captain in the spring, as well.

Another outstanding effort vs a ranked team, on the road!

LYNCHBURG, Va. ––– Indiana Field Hockey lost at No. 14 Liberty, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday morning in the team's second game of the season.

The Hoosiers and Flames battled the whole game. Each team scored within 50 seconds of one another in the third period to make it a 1-1 game.

From there, both defenses fended off any attack through the rest of regulation. In the first minute of overtime, Liberty drew a penalty and the Flames' Reagan Underwood converted on a penalty stroke goal to win the game.

The loss drops Indiana's record to 0-2 on the year.

KEY MOMENTS
• From the 5:27 to the 5:51 mark of the first period, Indiana took three shots, but none were converted. Freshman Maddie Olshemski took two and redshirt senior Sydney Keld had one.
• In the 24^th minute, Indiana junior goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge made back-to-back saves to keep the game scoreless.
• Liberty's Milagros Arteta opened the scoring right out of the halftime break with a goal at 31:14 to put Liberty ahead 1-0.
• Less than a minute later, Indiana tied it up at 1-1. Inés Garcia Prado scored off the Yip van Wonderen assist at the 31:55 mark.
• Both teams combined for three shots in the fourth period but neither could score, sending the game to overtime.
• In the early going of overtime, Indiana committed a foul to give Liberty a chance at a penalty stroke.
• Liberty's Reagan Underwood scores on the stroke to win the game, 2-1.

NOTABLES
• Loveridge recorded a season-high eight saves for the game.
• Inés Garcia Prado scored her first goal of her collegiate career.
• Yip van Wonderen notched her first assist of the season.
• Freshman Theresa Ricci made her first career appearance.

• Indiana will be back in action next weekend for two games in Oxford, Ohio. On Sep. 3, the Hoosiers will face Saint Francis (PA) in neutral site action, and on Sep. 4, Indiana will take on Miami (OH).
