Our state dwarfs those two. Ohio has plenty, as well, but we recruit OH extremely well.

I think the state of Indiana surpasses Kentucky, and possibly Tennessee, as well—but SEC schools are all expected to field very competitive baseball programs

No idea what the response timeline is for these kinds of things, but an acquaintance of mine has submitted a public records request to IU for details of Mercer's contract.  Does it truly expire this year or was he given a quiet extension?

I would be shocked if IU had decided that the slop we've seen on the field the past 2-3 years warranted an extension.

Theoretically, an extension could have been made a year or more ago and just never made public.  Don't think you can assume it would have necessarily been a recent extension.

I wasn't assuming that.  But there really hasn't been anything, at least in my opinion, for a few years that would warrant an extension.  His 2022 extension was signed only a year before the expiration of his original contract, and the program appeared to be on a much better trajectory back then.  In any event, it will be interesting to see what your friend finds out.  I would think IU would have to announce something one way or the other soon.

iirc Mercer’s 2022 extension was one of several coaches’ extensions announced at the same time. I don’t know if that would change anything this time around or not.

Indiana catcher Brayden Ricketts has entered the transfer portal. The left-handed hitter became the #iubase primary backstop towards the back half of the season. He hit .250 with 15 XBH last season. Ricketts will play in Cape Cod this summer.

Since we've pretty much had radio silence since the season ended, would it be safe to assume Mercer will be back next season?

My best guess is that he was either given a silent extension sometime after 2023 or his contract ends later this year (end of June maybe) and they're just waiting for it to expire.

Not sure what to think at this point.

The extension Mercer got in 2022 was apparently set up to expire (sometime) tin 2026. If he’s already been given another extension then I don’t see why they wouldn’t announce it publicly like the 2022 extension (although back then it was one of several coaching extensions that were announced, including Moren).

Mercer’s original hiring wasn’t announced until the first week of July, but maybe that was primarily due to losing Lemonis (to Miss St) in late June that season.

FWIW, the request my acquaintance submitted nearly 2 weeks ago has not been answered.

To add another FWIW, I find that IU responses to FOIA’s take around 6-8 weeks.

Mercer’s contract is an interesting one to look into…

I wonder if it would take that long if someone from the Indy Star or H-T submitted a request
