Indiana at Virginia - Saturday 9/9 @ 3:30 ET on ESPNU

Recommended Posts

With talk about the Virginia game spilling into the OSU game thread, I figured it was time to just start a new topic.

Indiana travels to Virginia for the first road game of the season. Kickoff is early in the day (12:30) and IU has had some trouble with early kickoffs in the past.

I'll be watching to see if Indiana's O-line can perform better against a lesser opponent. Lagow had little time to pass against the OSU and the running game could never get started. I expect both to be better this week against a crummy Virginia team.

Also interested to see if our D-line is able to create any pressure on Virginia's QB.

I expect Indiana to win, but I don't think it will be comfortable. A loss to Virginia sets a bad tone for the rest of the season.

This game will probably decide how our season goes. If we lose, it will be hard to find 6 wins. I'm hoping we'll be able to get our run game going with better play from both lines. Defense will hopefully bounce back and create some turnovers. It's still early in the season and even with our loss last week, these are our current S&P+ rankings:

  • Offensive S&P+ Rank: 67
  • Defensive S&P+ Rank: 32
  • Special Teams S&P+ Rank: 58
  • Overall S&P+ Rank: 48

And even with their win last week, these are Virginia's S&P+ rankings:

  • Offensive S&P+ Rank: 88
  • Defensive S&P+ Rank: 43
  • Special Teams S&P+ Rank: 116
  • Overall S&P+ Rank: 72

I look for them to bounce back this week. They aren't facing a D-line with 5 first round picks, so I see the running game come around to some level of respectability and also having a little more time to pass. It's probably a close game, but it wouldn't shock me to see them win by a couple TD's. I don't think the importance of this game is lost on anyone on the team.

I get it that we lost last week and didn't have a run game.....and we haven't done historically good against power 5 teams on the road...but why have we put so much  doubt into this season after the first game of season against a team that will most likely be in playoff? We are already in fire sell mode with this team? I honestly don't get it? I bring this up due to some comments in the prediction league...yes Virginia played alright against a FCS school but this team went 2-10 last year....William and Mary doesn't have the talent that we have...but apparently they might....idk just a thought...just think it's pretty early to write a team off who played well for 2.5 quarters.  I'm not ready to jump ship. Let's go Hoosiers show people what you're made of.

I think it's more of what IU football has historically done than this one team. Also, I haven't followed UVA football much so the idea of playing a power 5 team, even a terrible one, on the road has me a bit skeptical.

I'd love to see IU go hang 6 TDs on them and watch our D shut them down all afternoon. I'm just not there with any sort of confidence yet.

I'll be completely honest.. I've noticed that I'm not really as excited about IU football this year as I have been the past few years. I think part of it is because of the new basketball coach and all the excitement surrounding that. I think I might be looking past football season because I want basketball here asap. The other part is that I'm kind of bored with "almost". We play good teams tough but we always come up a little short. Idk, I guess I'm just feeling greedy and getting bored waiting for us to take the next step. I hope we get this win on Saturday but I don't really know what to expect. O$U is such a dominate team that it's hard to gauge where we're at as a team.

In a lot of people's lifetimes the Cubs had done absolutely nothing, yet we know what happened last year...I know it's two totally different sports and I'm not saying IU will get to the college football playoffs in the near future but we shouldn't just lose all hope and give up on this team. The program will get nowhere without fan support.

Cubs have always been near the top of spending and payroll. Gives them a competitive advantage. IU can't recruit with the B1G (usually 10th or so) Recruiting is comparable to payroll per respective sports.

It could happen, but it'll take some sort of miracle.

None of this will stop me from watching and rooting for IUFB though.

No and I get that. Gerry dinardo put it the best way possible and I take what he says usually with a grain of salt. He said IU was a 10 year program given its history. And wilson had us on the rise within year 5. However I think allen came into a good situation and has talent on offensive side and has recruited very well for a first year coach. Kids can see he is genuine and not fake with his enthusiasm. Wilson would say hey you'll have a ton of stats lol. I don't think it will be in 2-3 years and we will be ranked given tom 3-5 and I think fans will be happy but the fans need to rally around this team and show up and support. I heard fans saying where's the old Iu the whole OSU game. Yes I get that we have been brainwashed for that but there also needs to be change within the stands and keeping the cheering going all season or at least during games lol

A big part of this is getting students into the game and keeping them there. A rowdy student section can help push a team over the hump. Part of that is CTA and the program is selling the students on a good time and the biggest is winning. I wish students could be promised a great time and win and something fun after the game as a reward for staying.

It seems like we're stuck in a chicken/egg-ish scenario. To get to the next level we need increased fan support. To get increased fan support we need to get to the next level.

Bloomington on Saturdays during college football is always a great place to be, but it's a bummer when you get to the game and the crowd is dead. CTA seems a lot more personable than Wilson so I think he's capable of drumming up more fan support. He just has to make sure he keeps the program on the upswing. I'd love for us to get to where we're a consistent 7-8 win team.
