TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Does anyone remember last year when Dakich said people "would be shocked to learn of the coaches who would consider coaching IU" if given the chance?  Shocked in a good way, because he said these coaches have won titles, are established at other schools, or have proven themselves to be the best at their level.

He went on to say how he knows this because he talks to these coaches quite frequently, and/or knows people close to them.  I remember when he was talking about this on air, coming to the conclusion that Bill Self was one of the guys he was referring to.  I know that's the definition of a long shot, but you never know when someone feels ready to take on a new challenge.

Anyway, has me excited and optimistic if we do make a change.

And now dacich is a crean homer but if this
was true a good ad would junp on these coaches asap. Sadly we have glass.

I remember Kravitz proclaiming that he knew Tom Izzo would be interested. Not sure I believe that. Certainly that wouldn't be the case now. No chance he'd follow his good friend.

I'm curious as to how serious some of these guys are that they think high school coaches could outcoach Crean....... Of course there are people on here who have suggested going and getting D2, D3, and NAIA coaches to take over the program cause they're from Indy, who cares that they'd never even compete recruiting wise. So they probably do believe that

I would take a handful of HS guys to call an out of bounds play or put in a 2nd half game plan over Crean, but the overall coaching/recruiting/media then no there probably isn't a HS coach that compares.

Holtmann building a stronger resume by the day

Butler was down 8 or so at halftime and came back strong in the second half.

Down the stretch Butler hit I think 10 straight free throws but Xavier hit 6 or 8 straight themselves. Have never seen a finish like that. X down 1 would foul Butler who would make 2 to put them up 3 then Butler would foul X and not let them take a three.

Both teams perfect from the line down the stretch - that was cool to see.

Ive argued this for years. No doubt in my mind we will see plenty of great candidates when the job comes open.

There's a lot of hand wringing over offense on this board, and I'm not claiming to love our half court offense, but watching a lot of college basketball over the last couple weeks has made me want a new coach even more, but I think the focus on offense is almost misguided. Could of half court offense be better? Absolutely! But we're not really terrible.

But, I watch a game like Butler vs. Xavier and I see both half-court offenses looking pretty similar to ours, even with turnovers (IU's problem is ridiculous unforced turnovers) , the difference is the defense turnovers. Both coaches use pressure and defensive adjustments to impact the game. I left the game thinking either coach would make our current team vastly better than it is.

I'm going to add onto this: something I've been seeing here and on other boards is the statement "you can't fire him a year after winning the Big Ten. Who would want to come here under those circumstances?" Answer: lots of coaches. Lots.

This mindset is what nearly two decades of irrelevancy/mediocrity does to a fanbase, and it pisses me off. Successful coaches don't back down from a challenge. They don't care how demanding the fans are. They don't care who they're following. They just do two things: Recruit and win games. Kentucky fired Billy Gillespie for missing the tournament and being average the year before that. It didn't stop Calipari from going there. UCLA fired Ben Howland two weeks (two weeks!) after winning the Pac-12. Someone must have forgotten to tell Steve Alford.

When our season ends, Glass is going to evaluate where we are, and knowing he's had to deal with this in 2014, 2015 and probably again this spring, he'll ask himself if he feels there's a good chance he'll be going through it again in 2018. A quick glance at our incoming class, possible NBA departures and returning squad will give him his answer, and he'll pull the trigger. He doesn't need to see any more.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, I went over the RPI of the other blue blood schools, as well the teams in the B1G ahead of us of right now:

Kansas 4
Kentucky 6
Louisville 9
Duke 12
UNC 16
UCLA 19

Minnesota 10
MSU 25
Maryland 28
Illinois 35
Purdue 40
Wisconsin 46
Nebraska 50
Penn State 67
Ohio State 93
Indiana 99

This is nuts.

Now for sh!ts and giggles count up each of those schools wins against the rpi top 25. That will really make u frustrated at this IU team

Gillespie was fired for not endearing himself to the fans and boosters while being a jerk to everyone else while losing at UK after they ditched 10 loss Tubby. He was batshit crazy. Howland was fired because he didn't advance past the 1st round of the NCAA tournament 5 years in a row along with transfers and discipline issues of players. Would be curious to hear what the breaking point is here. Usually it goes beyond the play on the court since the head coach is responsible for things other than on court results like appearances, and donations. At what point does Sweet 16s and B1G titles inconsistently get you fired? Hopefully we find out that answer this year.

I would say watch 10 Butler games. He is heads and shoulders above Crean as a coach and getting better every year. Outside of Enfield and Collins I think he is the next name coach.

The end of Villanova or Xavier are only 2 games to see he is light years beyond our current. He wouldn't be plan A but would be a high plan B.

Crean has mishandled player discipline in the past as well. It wasn't the same issues as what went on at UCLA but it wasn't done correctly. I believe that's been taken care of internally though.

I wouldnt say a win AT PSU is a given

Specially after they just beat Minnesota who has been playing a lot better than us of late. We have way more talent, but that talent isn't being used right. Start DG, RoJo, JBJ, Juwan & DD next game. One to send a message to TB and Newkirk and two because that would be our best shot at winning. OG is better off the bench or he would start for me.
