You don’t really interview for these jobs.

He’s 19-25 last season through this one. He’s also the best coach they’ve ever had accounting for half their NCAA appearances, most of their post season wins and their only FF. If age weren’t a factor he’d surely be getting more time. Might even be partially mutual.

Same. Cignetti shows some people it is possible. Of course anyone that follows other schools or looks around knows it is possible. But IU has been so bad it verges on the statistically improbable. At this point we could hire the president of the Celtics and I’d be cautiously optimistic at best knowing that IU basketball could screw anything up.

As the old OSU AD publicly joked one time something to the effect of “the HC reports to me, but I’m subordinate to the HC.” That was when Meyer was there, I think. Any successful basketball or football coach will be so powerful that the org chart showing who they report to will be pro forma at best.

Wouldn’t be the worst idea. Make the new coach demonstrate he has coaching chops before pouring a bunch of money in.

Yes they will. Which I will enjoy. IU was fine. We deserved to be there. Lost to a more talented team on the road. I’d probably prefer to see more sec losses. If ND beats uga and by any margin at all it can be the nail in the coffin of the narrative that IU or any big ten team didn’t belong. The acc is another story.

Nah…just dumb timing on IUs part. Literally negotiated at the worst possible time in terms of leverage.

Cig was saying what he learned to make himself successful. He basically said it was 50% his dad and 50% Saban then he listed off all the qualities from Saban that he thinks makes himself successful. And Saban jumped in at the end and said “I didn’t teach you to talk all that ****. I know that.” Cig blamed it on his mom.

If you watched the pregame Saban basically told Cig to stop running his mouth if he wants to be successful. I never played at that level to know what makes the bulletin board. But Saban brought it up.

Tbf, the staff failed to provide a blocking scheme to protect him. The osu game was particularly bad. No qbs thrive without protection and that includes Tom Brady. I agree the defense was top ten-ish. Just put in too many bad spots. The D is encouraging though. If they can field d’s like that they’ll be successful.

    Second Half ND Game Thread

Yup. Just ignore the morons. IU was easily a top 12-15 team this year. Just not a top 5ish. The bigger problem moving forward is cig was outcoached in his two biggest games and honestly the second half of the UM game too. He did a great job this year but needs to improve moving forward if he wants to maintain this success.

Nah…there’s structural disadvantages to a program like Indiana in football. I lived in Madison during part of Wisconsins solid run. There’s no shame in being a very good, but not great, program. It was fun. So much better than being the doormat of old.

Honestly, even if they maintain this level, it’s so much better than what Indiana has been in the past I can’t be mad. It won’t justify the money they put up for him, but it’s better than anything we’ve had in over 30 years.

Same as osu. Outcoached by guys twenty years his junior who’s own fan bases didn’t want at one time.

Well if anyone had great confidence in scott dolson hes now 1) given a raise to mike woodson and 2) given cignetti the charlie weis treatment. I’d say this coaching search is gonna be fun!

Allegedly he did in the mid 90s which coincided with a downturn in success. Funny how that works.

He’s never registered on my radar enough for me to even consider the question. Let me think…yea, I guess I liked him enough as a player. I was around when he was ipfw and he did a decent enough job, I guess. So…I don’t know… The broader question is: wtf would the IU administration be listening to a 21 yr old f’n kid? 21 yr old kids are idiots with the worldly wisdom of gnat. Lots of athletes in his position make loyalty plays for their favorite assistants. Why would any adults even listen to it??? It speaks volumes about how unserious an administration Indiana is/was. If there were an adult in the room and they had told Fife to pack his bags and head for the Michigan border because we have this young coach named Jay Wright we’re bringing in, would anybody even care? Sure, a lot of the old guard would have cried at the time. But by now they would all lie and say they always knew we should’ve dumped Fife, Alford, Buckner, Gonzo et al and went with the talented young guy who brought us more championships. I can’t wait for a DC search firm to identify Jerome tang as our top target.

My last bit of faith died when I waited around for Crean to tear down the program so he could build it exactly like he wanted and he built one team (and awesome one at that) and promptly crapped out and went right back to mediocre. I barely could gather my interest for the Archie years after watching his teams play a little. I was very skeptical Woody would work out. My interest has somewhat been driven by the new changes with transfers and NIL I have long maintained, before I even joined this board, at such changes would primarily benefit a school like Indiana. I feel vindicated in that belief, but unfortunately you still need a good coach to steer the ship. Arguably now a good X’s and O’s coach is more important than a good recruiter (the types that have dominated college ball for a while now) because you could theoretically offload ~50% of player acquisition duties to a good GM type. i’m excited for the upcoming coaching search, simply because they are fun. But I have no confidence IU will get it right.

    The Case for TBD

Just because this discussion is kind of fun…in a perverse sort of way… Davis also took over the best program of any of them. We were still considered elite and one of five blue bloods. Jeffries wasn’t coached by knight but definitely was recruited by him—the same with the rest of that loaded roster Davis inherited. He was by far left the best roster of all our post knight coaches which he promptly ran dry with his Woodson-esque local recruiting. Which brings me to one name that hasn’t been brought up yet: Eric Gordon. He desperately wanted to play at IU but it was a complete no go with Davis. Oden, Conley, Gordon, Harangody, older Zeller, and about a half dozen more was a good era for in state recruiting. I think you could’ve never left the state and built one, maybe two, championship teams in that era. Davis wasn’t really a factor for any of them. At the time I honestly thought if Davis left, we’d go back to championships. I can’t even believe I’ve survived 25 yrs of this crap. :/

I don’t disagree. After watching him last season I have expressed my own couple criticisms of his style. But there’s no need to fabricate what actually happened in the game to justify some silly critique of a guy at Michigan in some half hearted attempt to continue to defend Woody. I disagree with your last paragraph though. We’re not hiring the new coach. We’re just arguing with a Woody shill. You don’t really have to take anything at face value from people who spent so much time defending Woody despite all the evidence to the contrary. So for my money, Dusty > Woody, and that’s all that matters in this discussion.
