They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
str8baller replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
People will say Woodson wouldn’t have gotten considered for the IU job unless he was a former player and then with a straight face mention Dane Fife as a possibility for the next staff. -
We all thought Knight was back. Patterson just didn’t have that killer instinct. This led one of the top 5 things on PTI, IIRC. Even the bad times back then were better than now. we’re essentially irrelevant.

I used to watch the nba more back then, and his two coaching stints really weren’t as bad as his overall record suggests. He worked for two atrocious organizations at the time. In the NBA you can get some mileage with just roster/star management and guys seemed to like him. He also came in and did better than his predecessors at both places. So he didn’t face a ton of fan abuse. Quite the opposite really. But there’s a reason he didn’t last long at either spot and we’re seeing it. But this is probably the most sustained fan discontent he’s faced in his career. -
Worst part of expansion. We’re probably going to have a bunch of years where unbalanced scheduling basically determines the conf champ.

This is actually hilarious in a George Costanza way. It likely would not do a damn thing to keep him. but it would make IU scramble on the messaging front. I actually want to see a coach on the hot seat try this now. -
That was a fun one, and I was there. Never seemed to be in doubt then Cove got hurt and Donald Perry came in and did Donald Perry things…lol.

Crazy how much UK loves the 3 ball. They’ve pass up semi open shots around the rim to pass out for 3s

Agreed the 10 percent have given up on Woodson succeeding. A select few have just motte-and-Bailey’d it to “Woodson will last the season” in an effort to point to others being wrong too. I’m no insider so it makes no difference to me. But it accounts for the back n forth for the last 25 pages. -

If Woodys defenders are getting this much grief on a message board, imagine how it is for him in real life…lol -

He was allowed to after being relieved of duty—and graciously being allowed to “resign”—during the season. like i said, you’re just being stubborn and silly. Reply with whatever nonsense you want, much like when you thought Woody was going to turn it around this year, I’m not going to engage with such delusion. -

Mike Davis. I know you really took your lumps defending Woody all offseason, so this whole game of semantics is like a proxy war to try and save face or something. But you’re just making yourself look silly. Unlike KCathy, I don’t think you’re an actual troll, just a nice guy who believed in Woodson, so I don’t know why you persist. -

Lol…instead of untangling that convoluted mess, let’s just point out that you’re at odds with your fellow poster Cathy. But we can all agree on one thing: i was right about 3/5 basketball coaches since Knight being terminated/resigned/fired before the end of the season. This is exceedingly straightforward which is why I find it hard to believe anyone not trolling can’t grasp it. There’s no IU process or precedent of IU having a deliberate end of season pow wow to fire coaches. Woody will be fired whenever the reactionary chuckleheads in the IU admin feel like it, which is historically long after everyone else knows it’s time to go. We’re in that territory now. Could be tomorrow. Could be April or anywhere in between. -
This was on espn classic or something at the bar i was having lunch at last week. I sat there and watched most of it. Really underrated game from the Crean era. Somebody earlier mentioned the 93 Michigan games. Ive watched those a couple times. Really great games from the last of the great Knight era.

Nonsense. Historically inaccurate that only can exist on the back of semantics. Just because I like to be entertained I would love to hear you and scottR and AH explain to me how Sampsons resignation was a “firing” but Davis’ wasn’t and was a true “resignation.” Oh I remember now…Davis wanted to let his adoring fans at IU down easy as he climbed the coaching ranks to take on the All Time Great Blazers of UAB!!! Thanks for the early notice, Mike! Whatever happened to that Davis character? The way he left here successfully, clearly using the IU job as a stepping stone, he’s gotta be coaching the Lakers by now. Maybe even the Olympic team! -

That’s not a sign of a process—just incompetence. -

IUs fired 5 coaches in my lifetime. Only 2/5 have been at the conclusion of the season. Her silly narrative doesn’t even conform to historical fact. -

https://archive.triblive.com/news/davis-to-leave-as-indiana-coach-at-end-of-season/ I forgot. He “resigned” and was allowed to finish out the year. If you don’t believe that he was fired, my dm’s are always open for amazing investing opportunities. Bridges galore… -

We will get no say, unless one of you is a secret billionaire donating millions to NIL. In that case, DM me I have some better investment opportunities… But a new coach might look at his 38% FG percentage, 6% 3pt percentage, and more turnovers than assists and think that his particular set of guard skills aren’t worth the price tag. With that said, I’m sure somebody will pay him. Maybe even our new coach. The physical talent is there for sure. -

Even the Roman ceasars had to answer to the mob. Barring a miracle it’s tough to see how they put this back together. You probably derail the program by bringing him back and the good thing about the NIL era is that you need fans engaged. The more I think about it, the more I think they go the Mike Davis route. They’ll eventually announce he’s retiring at the end of the season. -

Probably depends on: 1) our overall NIL pot 2) The coach 3) The other options out there For a guy like Tucker, I’m guessing he’ll get good money in the portal anyways. Do it’s just whether you think he’ll fit or not or if you want to pay that to some other guy that didn’t work out someplace. Kansas and AJ Storr is a good example of lots of money spent/received but both parties are probably worse off. -

What kind of light are you looking for? If it’s just Woodson gone, I think we’re at the 95% confidence interval already. If you’re looking for competitive ball the rest of the season, I’m guessing it will be here and there but mostly disappointing -

Same, depending on NIL. New coach may not want to allocate a bunch for Tucker or Carlyle, for example. But with Galloway, Leal, Ballo, Hatton and Goode gone—plus there’s always one or two that leave anyways. You kind of need most of the rest of the guys to stick around with only two recruits coming in. You’ll still have to pull at least 3 or 4 from the portal. I’m guessing a competent coach can get more out of guys like Rice, Carlyle, Tucker and Mbako than what Woody has.
