IU could be undefeated going into the Kansas game and they still won’t be favored to win that game.    Winning at Kansas would be one of the best wins of the year in all of college basketball if Kansas were to stay in the top 10.    A win doesn’t guarantee anything though.  Kentucky beat them by 100 last year at Phog and Kansas ended up having the last laugh and won it all.    It’s fun to speculate what IU’s record will be in these big matchups but in reality they are still just a piece of the overall puzzle.   IU could go O-4 in those games and still make the tourney and they could also go 4-0 in those games and miss

We can disagree, a home game vs a W against KU at the Phog are just different animals to me. Even odds to win at the Phog? Seriously doubt that.

For those four games, three of them are oddsmaker coin flips, and for one we will be a underdog.
That equates to an expectation of about 1.75 wins for those four games. Therefore, two wins would be a success and three wins would be a strong overachievement.

I really doubt anyone expects us to sweep the 4. I'd assume most would simply be happy with a split.
I'm assuming we'll be even or slight road favorites when we go to Xavier.
Right now, I'm sure UNC would be healthy road favorites when they come to Bloomington. But that will depend of course on what we do vs Xavier, and what UNC does in the Phil Knight Invitational (#14 Nova, #18 OR, #19 Bama, #24 UConn, Mich. St.) out in Portland Nov24-27. But... UNC might be a bit worn out playing 3 games on the West Coast once they come to Bloomington only a few days after getting done in Portland.
AZ will be a neutral site game (Vegas), and right now assume a toss up more or less.
Kansas has a week off before we play them, and as of now, they'd be healthy home favorites. They play Duke early, and then the Battle for Atlantis, so we'll have a good idea what they look like prior to playing them.

In short, I just prefer the early big games. Win or lose, they will pay off later in the season, and/or post season.
At the end of the day, if you want to be a big time program, you need big time preseason games like this.
Woody had a good first year. He's got his work cut out for him in year 2. Got my popcorn.

People hated our 300-plus ranked non-con scheduling (for good reason, imo) but the 2022 noncon schedule is frankly brutal, talk about flipping the schedule on its head -- complete polar opposite in non-con scheduling. We're going to see fairly early on if the preseason predictions are on or off. I'm both encouraged by the non-con, looking forward to the power matchups, and a little apprehensive that we've bit off more than we can chew so early on.
But -- even if the team loses more of these than we'd like, it does fit into that MSU-type scheduling that gets the team battle-tested early and from which it develops into a strong, tested team heading into conf play, and sets us up well for NCAA-selection, when there's no way the idiotic committee can downgrade IU based on SOS, like it clearly did this past season while favoring UM on its SOS while ignoring its poor overall record. Net positive.

The last report was it's anticipated he'll be back at the start of the season -- but to me, being realistic, he just had groin surgery. The idea that he'll be back and playing at the start of the season to me is fanciful. obviously not practicing or anything like for the rest of the summer, and he'll need to get back into game shape, full bore, and you know, it's groin surgery. I doubt he's out there that early, will love it if he is. (Kid's tough and has a great work ethic, so maybe.)
KU loses at home when, lol. I'd love a W there but I'll bank on a L.
Like I said I'm optimistic (very) on this team. I think we beat AZ and probably X though that's away, and I tend to think we get UNC at home in a monster home game with all the surrounding hype. So I think we have a pretty good shot at 3-1, but I also see 2-2 as very possible.

Funny and ironic that Archie didn’t want to play Sean/Arizona, and this season we get both Arizona and Sean Miller at Xavier.

Xavier will be tough.  Sean is a tough coach but not the best.  They return a fair amount of talent.  Nunge is one of their stars with Indiana ties, then of course Jerome Hunter.

going to be a crazy non-conference.

If we wanna win big in conference and the tournament losing three of those four will do no harm and will have us ready for anything.

That's a brutal 3 game stretch lol. Love it.
vs. North Carolina, Nov. 30 (Bloomington, Ind.) vs. Arizona, Dec. 10, 2022 (Las Vegas, Nev.) — not finalized at Kansas, Dec. 17, 2022 (Lawrence, Kan.)
At least if we get Nova in the Gavitt game, it'll fall before our 3 cupcakes.

I dug into stuff going down the rabbit hole this week, and below is what I've found.
    Here's our past Gavitt games
2021 St Johns 2020 Covid Cancel, but we did play Butler later 2019 DNP, but we did play UConn 2018 Marquette, and we also played Butler later 2017 at Seton Hall 2016 DNP, but we did play Butler 2015 Creighton (#5 PS this year), and we also played St Johns later I looked at the GG rules/agreements, etc. earlier, and here's what I found.
8 games per year. Each BE team is supposed to play min 6 games. Each B10 min 4. Since the 2020 season was canceled, this won't happen, but I'm sure they'll try to get as close as possible. I'd assume the targets of 6 and 4 and cut down to 5 and 3?
BE teams that have played 6 (met commitment): Creighton, DePaul, so good chance they won't play this year. BE teams that have played 5 (likely met Covid reduced commitment): Marquette, Providence, SH, SJs BE teams that have played 4: Butler, Georgetown, Nova, Xavier (all probably a given to play in the GGs) BE Other: UConn joined the conference recently and had not played any GGs, so assume they are exempt.  B10 who have played 4 (met commitment): IU, IL, UM, NE, OSU, RU, WI B10 who have played 3 (likely met Covid reduced commitment): Iowa, Maryland, MN, NW, PSU, PU,  B10 who have played 2 (below): MSU  So likely (not guaranteed) to see Butler, Georgetown, Nova, Xavier, Marquette, Providence, SH, and SJs as the 8 So likely (not guaranteed) from the B10 you'll have MSU, Iowa, Maryland, MN, NW, PSU, PU, IU as the 8 based on IU was assumed and the other 7 teams haven't met their target. So assuming they don't want to repeat past Gavitt matchups (SJs, Marquette, SH, Creighton), assuming they'll stay away from the frequent in-state played Butler, IU's potential likely is.
#16 Nova #24 UConn (probably not since we played them OoC, not GGs, in 2019, and because they haven't played in the GGs at all) Xavier (previously the #25 in PS ranks) Georgetown Providence DePaul (already met commitment target, so likely not in the mix) Looking at the other top tier B10 teams (assuming they'll try to match tiers...)
UM - already hit target and doesn't list the GG on their future schedules page IL - already hit target and can't find GG mentioned as a PS game OSU - already hit their target, and can't find any mention of GG in preseason scheduling MSU - under target, and likely to get a top BE matchup So guessing it will be IU and MSU, playing Nova and Xavier. Now the weird UConn situation could throw a wrench in the whole thing.
But my guess will be Nova. We've already had 3 homes games, so guessing on the road. Nova has only had 2 home games.

This guy did the math and digging too it seams

I hope this is the opposite of the 2016 team. They went 15-3 in the B1G but got punished for no major out of conference wins (Maui was a disaster and so was the Duke game). I'm okay with them going 14-6 and maybe not winning the regular season n the B1G IF they can go 2-2 or maybe even 3-1 against the big four games.
Side note: We all talk about 2013 and rightfully so but I believe the 2012 and 2016 teams could have made the final four in the right bracket. Just got stuck against UK (National Champs) and UNC (National Runner-Ups). Both teams had some bad losses that prevented them from getting a 3 seed and better matchups.

Creighton will probably start out the season in the top 10 and I would have them closer to top 5 if everyone is healthy. Rumors are they might not be in the gavitt games this year.   If IU played at  Creighton along with the other games that’s gauntlet of games.
