Agree. As @8bucks points out Painter has done a good job recruiting and developing Purdue guys. That will keep them relevant, and I don't think they're about to fall off a cliff just because Frankenstein is gone, but it's not going to keep them competing at the top of the conference. With NIL the way it is right now, IU and other teams should be at the top (though in IU's case imo that's going to turn on how our coaching situation works out). -
I think the extra point is the NIL amount. IU is spending heavy and already has to land the highest rated big in the portal plus a haul of stong players. The guy you’re selling to you’re actually buying, and the price has to be right. How much more is the program spending and what is reasonable to spend on a guy who won’t play much at all barring injury and then will bolt, and how much are other programs offering? program has deep pockets/ donors but they’re not bottomless and need to balance the spending with wants and needs for next season

Mods if this should be in another thread plz feel free , didn't think this belongs in the Fire Woodson thread but move if/as needed Some highlights from this HT story, maybe "here we go again" should start it, but maybe with room for optimism that he'll get around to instituting a wing and outside game -- Indiana basketball roster remodel gives Mike Woodson flexibility (heraldtimesonline.com) “I’m going to try to play two bigs,” Woodson said, “just to test it.” [ugh] Woodson has larger ambitions on his mind though. Running back last year’s frontcourt rotations isn’t the limit of his thinking.... The Hoosiers might begin games with two bigs, but they’ve certainly got the personnel to flip to smaller lineups that stretch opponents from multiple directions and well beyond the 3-point line. “Just like I played in New York,” Woodson said, referring to his time with the Knicks. “I just haven’t been able to get there, and I think we can this year.” And Woodson said Wednesday he believes Bellarmine transfer forward Langdon Hatton can open his range up as far as the 3-point line in time. “These eight weeks, man, of summer play, will kind of shape where we are as a ball club,” Woodson said, “and give me some kind of indication going into next season.” [some things he'll hopefully see:] Mgbako finished last season greatly improved at both ends of the floor. He scored in double figures in all but two games from the start of February onward and shot 37.8% from 3-point range in league play. After making two or more 3s in just four of IU’s first 13 games in his freshman season, Mgbako managed the feat 13 times in the Hoosiers’ final 20. Goode’s bonafides are long established. A dangerous 3-point shooter, Goode averaged 38.8% from distance across three seasons in Champaign, and shot slightly better than that last season in 157 attempts, far and away his highest single-season volume in college. A McDonald’s All American, Tucker brings midrange skill to the rotation, and with time should become an equally reliable 3-point shooter as well. He might also be the most dynamic of the three. Together, they give Woodson the kind of depth and flexibility he’s not necessarily enjoyed to this point in his Indiana tenure.

Several of these guys would’ve taken the IU gig. It’s not even that strong a list but Woodson doesn’t belong on it. Imagine our IU with a top 10 or so coach. So much potential. Maybe one day we get to see it again

Woodson and the HT on his new roster
HoosierHoopster replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
From what i saw his assists were mostly inside, which went along with our finishing at the very bottom in outside shot attempts. We don’t have a kickout game - not saying that’s necessarily on Malik, it just wasn’t there. I’m hopeful that changes with the added shooting. With TJD it was Race where the ball often got stuck when he tried to go iso. Malik has an outstanding individual offensive game but his ability - recognition of when to kick the ball back out is still a question mark, imo, as I said above i think it’s mostly on staff, but need to see it this year. -

Yeah good points, defensively he’s still a work in progress— and that appreciation spectrum idea sounds like it’d make for a fun thread -
Woodson and the HT on his new roster

I have felt similarly, as much as I like his excellent footwork and mini hook, but think it’s part of the play through the post / up front system. Plays haven’t been run for kickouts, complete failure to use the outside shot. For me, it’s on the staff. Malik is a heck of a player, imagine him at KU, UCONN, etc. I’m hoping Woodson, who still will of course play his 2 big scheme, will now have sets and actions that use the perimeter as a much larger part of the O — if he does I think we’ll see Malik passing out better, kid has game, the staff needs to use it better. -
Fire Coach Woodson Thread
HoosierHoopster replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
As somewhat younger but also part of that trajectory, 10 and in Bloomington from our 76 NC through the 87 while at IU, I see now it’s my fault as I then left for law school and the program went downhill shortly after. Ok kidding aside it is crazy when we just look at wins and tourneys, but it’s not really. The RMK termination of course started the slide, the U failed in replacing him, then the Sampson disaster (caused by the administration’s choices more so in how to deal with it than the hire) destroyed the program overnight and we’ve been on the long trail to climb the mountain back ever since. That doesn’t mean we’re not part of the blueblood history, but yeah, we haven’t made it back. We’re not one of the elite ball programs now, but while I don’t think anyone thinks differently, we have seen some great years in between that show the promise of this program remains. I mean Tom freaking Crean had IU as one of the best teams in the country for several years. We had swag even though his coaching was, well, you know. So it starts at the top. I am one who is well off the Woodson bandwagon, he’s not the guy, but he could be the next step up the ladder. We should be pretty damn good this year. We’re not an EE team but it all comes down to getting the right guy next hire. If I were a student I’d see what the program can be again, that I think is the real frustration driving this thread. -
Worth checking out, Canadian province. I grew up playing hockey in Quebec in the summers, spent some time in Montreal, and Prince Edward Island is a nice vacation spot

Great to see and hear. What you do is well intentioned, valuable, and certainly appreciated by the students -- and their parents. I remember visiting office hours a few times while at IU (late 80's, it's been a while lol) and encouraged my kids to do so at their schools. The extra credit you offer is a huge benefit, and worth it not just for the individual credit to the students but for the motivation it creates to better understand the subject and learn. Good for you!
