  1. Actually, saying that Stevens had no interest is the opposite of what Chris said.
I like the direction we went.  It saved a lot of money for assistants and associate AD's.

Yeah, sorry. I was more just referring to the offer itself. I guess I also don’t think even Woj would hear, “Well, he had a lot of interest, but couldn’t get out of his current contract.” That would be really toxic for him.

  2. I didn’t think so at first but after comparing notes with other people I trust it very well could have. Or Boston talked him out of it. I have no idea

I’m definitely choosing to believe the former because it’s what I want to happen lol. But the two things I keep coming back to: 1. How “quiet” it got after and 2. Did anyone ever answer if it would have to be reported that Boston gave him a raise?

  3. I have the same question but I also have a guess.
As we know, Boston has struggled this year. Injuries, underperformance, bad luck, the whole thing. Even the best nba coaches have a shelf life. Ainge knows it, Stevens knows it. They probably wouldn’t fire BS under normal circumstances. But they like him, maybe a shakeup would help, and if they know he’s interested in the IU job, maybe everyone gets what they want if the C’s fire BS: fresh voice for them, clean break for him. No accusations of “quitting on the team,” etc.

This is how I see it. As a completely biased IU fan, a “mutual agreement to part ways” makes sense in a season like this for them. Wasn’t it Bird who thinks no coach should last more than just a few years in the NBA?

  4. Been off the thread since about 3.  Does this sum up the last few hours?
unsubstantiated rumors that Matta agreed to a deal with Indiana and then failed a physical.  Quickly shot down by the most reliable local reporters from our athletic department as untrue.  No one actually has any reliable information that IU talked to Matta, much less went into contract talks or asked him to take alleged physical.  Reaction even after this non proof assumes that all the rumors were true and that apparently he was the only guy we have talked and that we are an embarrassment.  Then some Indiana sports guy with a twitter following smaller than my 12 year old nephew says it will be Belein, then intimates it will be someone from a multitude of former Indians guys.
do I have it summed up?

Yes. You should save us all a lot of time and just do this for every day haha.

  5. Being the men’s basketball coach is the most stressful job in Indiana. He’s not saving lives or treating cancer I know. But all eyes are on the head men’s coach in this state. Would be curious to see if he could handle that stress. I’ve never had back issues but doesn’t stress trigger episodes? I don’t know.

I mean, stress definitely doesn’t help back problems, but I guess that’s true of most health issues. It could be that one surgery did irreparable damage to a nerve, but otherwise other surgery pretty much fixed his problem. I’ve seen that a lot too. Have also been thinking if drop foot was one of his issues, that could explain people thinking he “needed help to his seat.” My opinion? His issues have most likely been blown way out of proportion. Not saying that they shouldn’t be vetted, but still...

  6. At the risk of sounding dramatic, does anyone else feel like the wind has totally been taken out of their sails? Like I’d normally be ecstatic to get someone like, say Beard. But now since apparently missing on Stevens, I’m reverting to my old bitter Hoosier fan ways. Feels like no great coach would want to come here. And even if we made a “good” hire, feels like he’d just find some way to underachieve, like Archie. Feels like Stevens was the only one that could fully mobilize and unify all of us again. Just my 2 cents.

  7. I can see the Jeff Goodman tweet now. Indiana gets their dream coach in the washed up Brad Stevens.  Or Brad Stevens failure to live up to expectations lead him to lowly Indiana

This. Been thinking this all day. Can’t wait for the PU fans and pUKe fans to all be like, “he’s never won anything, failed at Boston, blah blah blah...”
