  1. Serious question…do you guys think if this coming season goes south that the next IU head coaching search will be as embarrassing as Louisville’s? Kelsey may turn out great, I don’t know. But the optics on the whole thing have been brutal for them. We all just want to think that anyone (Pearl, etc) would leave for the IU job, but my confidence in that gets lower by the day and by each failed season.

  2. Appreciate the intent, but that name getting out would lose me my sources pretty quickly.

Hey Jerry, thanks so much for taking the time and for the detail. Are you personally a fan of Dolson and have trust that he will get this next hire right? Your update gives me some hope that he knows what he’s doing, but is perhaps handcuffed by admin/donors. Thanks!

  3. Thank you for sharing this.  There is something here that bothers me though.
He wouldn't want to come here because he doesn't think we'd give him adequate time??  For f*** sake, we keep coaches too long!  Louisville did the smart thing and fired their coach after two years and he's interested in them?
    That just doesn't make sense.

I know. “If you win there, you’re king. But if you lose, everyone turns on you.” That’s (I believe) word for word from our conversation. Again, I would argue that’s everywhere, but it’s not my place to try to reason that with family.

  4. I'd like to think this part isn't true, because not only is IU way too patient with coaches (see: Davis, Crean, Miller), but successful coaches aren't worried about not doing well or how much time they get. When you're a successful coach, you think about things like winning, overachieving and how you're going to be a rockstar when you do it.

Yeah, I agree with what you’re saying. I don’t know, that could just be something Dusty feeds to family so they don’t get their hopes up about him coming home? Ha, I’m grasping at straws.

  5. Thanks for sharing! I personally love these little tidbits and personal connections.
My only thought is— turn on him quickly? Holtman won 20+ five seasons in a row and didn’t miss the tournament and got fired mid season in his only down year lol. Not sure that’s a safer choice if that’s a concern. Only he and Matta started with five straight 20+ win seasons in their entire history.

Oh, I totally agree. I was really close to saying something like, “Well that’s all P5 jobs now, not just a place like IU,” but I didn’t.

  6. I think he has his choice between the two but I think he likes Louisville better. I know the family says that about IU but he would jump to come back.

Thank you for sharing. He’s putting together staffs right now.

Yeah, I would think he would have his choice. This person also said that they “spoke to him last week,” so the Louisville job probably wasn’t open yet. I hope you’re right about IU. It pretty much made me lose hope about that, even if he was offered. Just to be clear, I don’t blame Dusty at all. Just kinda felt like a gut punch.

  7. Right? “I’m gonna watch and see who jumps on and off the Titanic.”
    ????
WHO THE **** JUMPS ON THE TITANIC?
Recruiting litmus test: if you are stupid enough to jump on the Titanic we don’t want you.

Also should be a litmus test for the GM/assistant coach position.

  8. Idk why but Payne's speech gave me David Koresh vibes lol "I need everybody on the same page we sort of forgot that. I'm not going to let you blame me. I need all of Louisville with me. We sort of forgot that. I talked about its going to take time and I'm going to watch and see who jumps on and off the Titanic. We sort of forgot about that."
Weird guy. Can't wait to have him get to work for us in the portal.

I lost it when he said the thing about the Titanic. Maybe he’ll get a lifeboat off the Louisville Titanic this year and get to join the IU Titanic with Captain Woody next year.

  9. Ware is such a player. Having him and TJD in back to back years was such a treat.
I do not expect we will see a third year with such rim protection and scoring capability.
That does not mean we can't find success, but Woody does value that role a lot. Curious who we land for that slot.
Guards, guards, guards please... and a wing too.

I’m gonna be Debbie Downer again and say good luck to Woody finding anything close to what TJD and Ware have provided in back to back years. We are numb to just how good Ware has been because of TJD’s absurd numbers last year. Two absolutely unbelievable seasons (and an all-time great season for TJD) and what is there to show for it? If he can find a third rim protector anywhere close to those 2, he’s more of a magician than a coach.

  10. Dusty to OSU will be the final nail in the coffin of my fandom.

Agreed. I know a lot of people threaten this, but I’m all the way out if we run it back with Woodson and Dusty goes to OSU. I’ve been a faithful fan and hardly missed a game since I was 7 or 8. I’m 32 now. Not to be dramatic, but why would I continue to help and support a program that refuses to help itself?

  11. Wonder if anyone with a say is having second thoughts about last night’s vote of confidence given the McNeeley shocker.
No reason to believe they know ball enough to get it, alas. But the narrow but interesting path to being okay next year just about dried up.
Seems like the plan could’ve waited, even if the goal was to get ahead of portal concerns, there was no need for the timing we got.
Iu’s gonna have a miserable roster next year and a Dusty May presser in April 2025.

I wish. Really no reason for Dusty to wait to jump. You also have to wonder if he would “walk from Florida to Columbus” and wave at Bloomington on the way by.
