I know it makes more sense for them to switch to quarters, but I dunno. I like two halves. Puts more emphasis on momentum IMO

I can't think of anything more overplayed in Football Talk than "turning points" and "momentum." Most of the time it's just narrative, an analyst looking back to see when something changed and applying causation to it. A critical interception is the moment that wins a team a game, until their quarterback fumbles the snap and turns it right over. Usually it's not quite what it seems.
This, though, could be an exception. 2016 could be a massive turning point for Indiana University football, and it could be a season that makes (or breaks) the program for the foreseeable future.
Indiana played in a bowl game last year – the tenth ever. The last was in 2007. The one before was in 1993. IU football hasn't appeared in the postseason two seasons in a row since 1990 and 1991, and we haven't had a coach reach multiple bowls since Bill Mallory.
So it should be clear that if Kevin Wilson’s program wins six this year and becomes bowl-eligible, that would be a pretty big deal.
But this same program also hasn’t won a bowl game since 1991 (though, of course, The Kick Was Good). If we can not only get to a bowl but actually walk out winners, with whatever pseudo-trophy the organizers dream up, that's a massive step forward for this program.
Yeah, often it's overly simplistic to talk about momentum. But when you're trying to attract people to your team, winning helps. Being in bowl games helps. Winning bowl games helps. Players want to be part of successful teams, that's no secret; losing isn't a lot of fun and if you can make a choice to avoid losing, usually you'll do that. Fans don't want to go watch crap teams either.
Going to a bowl game once can be a fluke. Going twice in a row could be, but it's way less likely – especially after losing your quarterback and RB1 to the NFL. Going twice in a row is a step to going three times in a row, and that's a step toward being a winning program. It's been a long time – decades – since you could call Indiana a winning program, but we could be on the cusp of it right now.
Great reward comes with great risk, though. If IU fails to take a step forward – if Richard Lagow can't adequately replace Nate Sudfeld, if there's no New Jordan Howard, if the defense can’t figure out a way to not be a massive tire fire – well, there’s probably going to be a regression. Regression is bad. Regression sends the signal that this is still Indiana Football, with all that entails; that players like Sudfeld are rarities and good seasons are flukes. Regression doesn’t mean that the promised land of consistent success is impossible, but it does give the pessimists a lot of ammunition.
For the first time since Terry Hoeppner walked the Memorial Stadium sidelines, I’m excited about IU football. For the first time in a while, I feel like good things are coming. If we don’t screw it up, of course.

I think the burning desire comes from Hoosier pride so to speak. By that I mean, I want the kids from Indiana to want to go to IU because it's their destination school and I don't like IU getting scooped by other schools, pUKe, etc.

Logically, I know at the end of the day, it's most important to get good kids who fit the program and understand what it means to represent the state, regardless of where they are from.

Sometimes logic and pride don't jive.

My thing with in state recruiting and recruiting as a whole is you honestly just never know. Look at a guy like Vic who wasn't rated very high and out of state. He came to IU and is now probably one of the most beloved players ever, but on the flip side you have Hanner. Hanner was a 4 star if I remember correctly and in the state of Indiana and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who could've been any worse for our program. It's truly a crap shoot and no one truly knows what will happen until the kids get here and get on the court. I just hope Crean and staff finds guys that fit our style/program regardless of where they're from.

AD Glass gets it, period. I might not always agree with his decisions but I don't see him as an AD who is going to dime someone out. Look at the way he uses I, we, and he! That's language from a leader. I know some think he's a fan boy or that athletics have declined under him but the program's seem to be headed in the right direction.

He has a bowl game for football with an improving team
He has two B1G titles and three sweet 16s.
He has a national title in soccer.
He has B1G titles in baseball with appearances at the CWS
The women's basketball team has an appearance in the dance with a win for the first time in 25+ years.
He has the Olympians, especially the BA Lily King

He's getting money for facility upgrades that should help recruiting.
    - Cook Hall
    - Assembly Hall
    - NZE and soon SEZ
    - Bart Kaufman Field

I would love to see all sporting facilities between 17th street and the bypass. If they get the funding for a new golf course Fred would be The Man!

BLOOMINGTON — It’s finally official. Richard Lagow will be Indiana’s starting quarterback in the season opener at Florida International.
IU coach Kevin Wilson had danced around the official announcement for the last few weeks. He had said a few weeks ago that Lagow was “getting the bulk of the work.’’ He also said at that time that if the season started that day Lagow would be the starter.
But Friday in IU’s weekly press conference leading up to the Thursday night opener in Miami, Wilson said Lagow is IU’s guy.
Wilson said Lagow had moved to the head of the line as early as IU’s seventh training camp practice and had not done anything to lose that spot.
The official first game depth chart put out by the Hoosiers on Friday listed Lagow as the starter and had Danny Cameron or Zander Diamont listed as the backup. So if it came to that and a No. 2 quarterback was needed, it would apparently be a game-time decision.
IU offensive coordinator Kevin Johns said Lagow, a junior college transfer, has quickly earned the respect of his teammates.
“I think his teammates have recognized how hard he has worked since he’s been here, and really the physical tools are there,’’ Johns said. “He has the arm strength and the physical stature, the things you want in your quarterback. And really since he’s been here, all of the hard work that he’s done has shown up, and he has really taken on that leadership role.
“Really just the execution of our offense when we’re on the field, too. He has done a lot of things really well. More importantly for me though is that he has done nothing but get better every single time we went out to practice. We’re excited for him, excited to see what he can do and for him to lead our offense.’’
The challenge will be that Lagow has never taken a Division I snap. The 6-foot-6, 237-pound redshirt junior played the last two seasons at Cisco (Texas) Community College where he left as the top-ranked pocket-passing junior college quarterback in the nation according to ESPN. As a sophomore last season, Lagow threw for 2,285 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He completed 66 percent of his passes.
Running back Clyde Newton, who moved from defense to offense this season, said when Lagow is behind center receivers often need to make a subtle adjustment.
“As a receiver you get used to different releases and whether someone is going to throw harder or with a soft touch or something like that,’’ Newton said. “If you’re running down the seam, for example, and Rich Lagow is the quarterback you know that you’ve got to get on your horse because he has a cannon for an arm. With other guys you might have to peel back a little bit because they’re going to drop it right into your arms but a little shorter.’’
Johns said one thing Lagow has been working on this camp has been his footwork. He said when you’re dealing with taller players, this can be a challenge. He said it’s a conversation he has had with Lagow since the first time he walked through the door at IU.
Johns said there are a lot of similarities from a physical standpoint between Lagow and Nate Sudfeld. Sudfeld graduated in the spring and is now playing with the Washington Redskins.
“Rich is like Nate Sudfeld, a big, tall, long guy,’’ Johns said. “Sometimes if you’re not careful you can over stride and play with your feet too wide apart. With Rich, we’ve talked with him (since the beginning) that he needs to improve his footwork and his drops and his base when he delivers the football. He has worked extremely hard on it, and I only think he’s going to get better.’’
Johns said the most impressive thing he has seen from Lagow in this camp is his ability in the pocket.
“He doesn’t get scared, he doesn’t get rattled which is a great sign for a quarterback,’’ Johns said. “He will take off and run when he has to, a lot like Nate did. I don’t know from a speed standpoint if they’re much different to be honest with you, but I do know that he’ll take off and run if he needs to.’’
