He was a freshman.
I don’t care if he was a 9 star he was still a freshman and he steadily improved throughout the year. I disagree he, as a freshman, was “atrocious” most of the year. He was the co-Big Ten freshman of the year.

Just took a look at portal commitments so far and 4 of the top 50 guys have committed to a new program.
In the BT (or Big 16, 18, 20, 30? I can’t keep track anymore) four schools have portal commitments with Maryland (which seems to be somewhat of a mess) leading the way with 2 while Illinois, Rutgers and PSU each have one.
What the list doesn’t show, of course, is how many players have narrowed down to 1-3 schools. I don’t think it’s time to say this off season will be a disaster but we need to get commitments (especially guards) rather quickly.

I never said he told IU that. I said he had told friends that if he was going to go to IU they would need to change their offense and pay him a lot of money.
I doubt he would tell a head coach this. More likely he would hear their sales pitch and then choose another program

I like Hickman but if the demands are two fold about changing the offense and paying him a lot of money.....move on.
We all would like the offense changed but if a recruit is demanding that PLUS lots of money and he isn't an all world player....might want to seek elsewhere.  Hoping you're wrong cause I do want him, just not at that price.

How can I say that we should never play in the NIT?-- very simply. I cringed the last two times we took invites. 
But again, there are other things to complain about, I can't understand having energy towards that decision, it was the right one. 

I believe this "we skipped to get a head start on the portal" is a largely false premise.
We likely skipped the tournaments because of, in order of priority/importance:
Ware (likely), Banks and Gunn (probably), and maybe X, Gallo, or Leal (all of whom were injured to some degree) would not have played; we couldn't have run out anywhere near a full roster. So our team would've been MR, GC, MM, Sparks, Walker, and maybe one or two more at most. That is unworkable. We pre-empted the possibility that we wouldn't have been selected for the NIT, which would've been hella embarrassing. We didn't want to play in front of a less than interested and full Assembly Hall and potentially lose, which woulda also been embarrassing. Like 2017, when we accepted a sad-faced NT bid, and got rolled by Georgia Tech in front of 5,000 fans. Finally and maybe the lowest down the list, we wanted the staff to prepare for and engage in portal season as early as possible.

I’d be willing to roll the dice if the future high 4 and 5 stars  match our most recent high and 5 stars.
Ware, MM, Malik, JHS, Bates, Lander, Trace.  5 out of 7 is pretty strong.

You should start a Matt Painter thread. You seem to be pretty involved in honoring him. We’re trying to fire a coach here.  

I think getting NBA feedback is less about getting drafted now but having NBA people advise on what he needs to improve his stock.
