Transfer Portal w IU Interest
DChoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
He is a good player so I’m going to guess he is being given a supreme from whichever pizza place he prefers. Bench guys get Dominos cheese only. -
I agree with the sentiment, and Woody certainly struck out in HS recruiting, but the way things are these days the bags of money don’t bother me as much as it does some. Let’s say he would have landed 5 high school players (he only missed that target by 5. LOL). My assumption is that all 5 of those high school players would have had their “bags” lined up. Does that make them less desirable or low character? We were excited about Liam and I’d bet everything I own that the IU bag was well over 100k.

Thanks for the response. In regards to him entering the portal…I have no idea (and hadn’t really heard of him until a couple of hours ago LOL) but the odds of a mid-major “star” entering the portal are extremely high when their coach leaves and he has a chance to play at a P5 school. Not to mention that his NIL at ISU probably consisted of free pizza and the use of a bicycle while a P5 school will offer him 250k-500k+ or so. Based on the feedback I hope we get him -

And he is from Indy which hopefully/might help us. Hope we go at him with a 39 gallon lawn and leaf hefty bag -

I haven’t watched ISU at all. Does Conwell’s game look like it would transfer to the BT? I love the fact that he is 6’4” and from the field/3/FT he shot 49%, 42%, 86%. That would be GREAT if he could do something close to that in the BT. -
I agree with everything in your post except for the first sentence….LOL

Perkins not a great shooter Tucker is a mid-range guy Thats ok IF we can also land some shooters. What in the world needs to happen for IU, in INDIANA, to get shooters? Hopefully MM comes back because at this point he is the only perimeter threat we have. Another year in the 300’s, in 3 point shooting percentage and volume, won’t cut it. Is it really that hard?

I have no idea if Hunter Dickinson directly talked to other guys in the portal but when he transferred to Kansas he openly stated that he was making under 100k at UM and was aware of “stars” making nearly $1,000,000 and basically thought…WTF. The “briefcases” definitely, not surprisingly, have impact.

I admittedly know very little about Kelsey but he is only 48, has been a HC for 12 years and has won his conference an impressive six of the twelve years (also has 2 seconds and 2 thirds).

Apparently the administrations strategy is waiting for the others schools to sign all the available desirable coaches.

Collins has done a good job at a very tough place to coach. Some were saying it was time to move on from him after the 2021-2022 season but then they made the tourney the next two years. Good for him.

(C) Kel 'el Ware - COMMITTED TO INDIANA
DChoosier replied to Chris007's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
These days he can have an agent and still come back. Some “experts” have him as a first rounder so I would guess he is 98% gone. Imagine MM will also enter the draft to at least get feedback from the league but would expect he will be playing college ball (IU or somewhere else) next year, but who knows ? -

Your changing the narrative yet again ( I said he needed to land a guy like Knecht because he failed at recruiting. I didn’t say he would be credited for “developing” a “finished” guy like Knecht). You also imply that I am giving Woodson an excuse for not having perimeter players to develop this year. It wasn’t an excuse for Woodson….it was an indictment of his poor HS and portal recruiting. At this point, In the best interest of the board, I will just state that I 100% agree with you and am moving on..LOL -
THAT…….was funny
-
100% agree. That’s why I follow this board. Tons of good comments, insight etc but there have been a few more “left field” posts than usual this year. I get that a lot of that is due to decades of simmering frustration.

Yes, Recruiting and development do go hand and hand (you are subtly changing you original statement) You stated he failed to develop players last year. My point was that he failed in recruiting so he didn’t even have the type of perimeter players to develop this past year (ie it was a recruiting fail). In regards to “any freaking coach can buy talent”…Actually that is correct as every freaking coach is buying talent. I would bet that this year every single player (HS player or portal transfer) on every top 25-30 team will be “bought”. I wish we had 3-4 HS guys coming in and only needed a couple of portal guys but even in that scenario every one of those guys would be bought/receiving $$$$$. It’s just the way it is. -
The amount of made-up BS stuff being thrown around is more than I ever recall. There are many posts in which there is zero chance the poster is in a position to know if their statement is remotely true. A couple months ago we had the pleasure of reading many “takes” that Ware was shutting it down for the NBA (entitled, selfish, why we shouldn’t recruit a 5 star, doesn’t care etc etc) but instead he came back and initially was clearly playing hurt. Since then the made up shite has snowballed to an even greater degree.

It would have been difficult to develop Bates this year as the coaching staff’s commute back and forth to Missouri would have been a grind. Anyway, I stand by my point that recruiting, not development, was the issue as Leal, X, Gallo, Gunn and Cupps didn’t have a lot of one year developmental upside. That being said, once you moved the goal post to the need to recruit via the portal, I agree with that point. As far as “buying talent” being put in a negative light….It is what it is. Let’s face it, every guy we go after is going to be “bought” either by us or another team. -
One of the “hot” coaches, Byington, won’t be hot after a few years at Vandy…LOL

It’s an indictment of Woodson not landing talented offensive perimeter players. He bombed in the portal last year (from a perimeter standpoint. Ware was a great get) and recruiting this year (so far). Who was he going to develop on the perimeter this year? The only choices were X, Gallo, Cupps, Gunn and Leal. The way X played I would argue none of those 5 would start for any of the top 5 of so seeded teams (Gallo would have been an important 6th man for some of them). MM could be considered a perimeter guy and he developed. We will see if someone else develops Gunn but I don’t think we will see a whole lot unless he steps down to a Ball State type of team. -
Banks reminds me a bit of Geronimo. Both athletic and many expected both to develop. Geronimo did get twice as many minutes at Maryland vs his junior year at IU. With that extra playing time he got to shoot twice as many threes which he shot at a blistering 17% pace, had twice as many turnovers vs assists, shot a career worst 43% from the field, etc. Sometimes it’s lack of development but sometimes the guys just aren’t all that good.

I’m admittedly not a long-term aficionado of women’s basketball game but man I have been surprised at how physical the games have been and how the refs let them play (while, of course like the men’s refs, occasionally calling touch and/or phantom fouls). -

Ha, Our Shooting woes, perimeter defense etc have extended well beyond just Holmes. Good thing is that it is looking as though we will get the W.
