(2017) PF Billy Preston to Kansas
Brass Cannon replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
In recruiting as shown in the article posted by somebody else in the quoted portion of my post. I know you are just wanting to jump on anything but really read the context of the post first. -
Damn announcers jinxed him

Fair points. I still think he's gone if not we should be right back in the thick of things next year -
Amazing what luck can do with a little help

yeah we're top of the big ten but we are trending downward. That's my concern. -

Do you think Bryant is coming back. Its rare enough for a guy projected to get drafted to even come back let alone to do it twice. -

I know. What concerning to me is that we aren't even going after unheraldeds that fill a need. Since we knew we were missing on Wilkes other than Preston every single 2017 recruit we have sniffed around has been 6-7 or below. We go plenty of players for the 1-3 coach, we need a backup for Davis and Morgan next year. -

Agreed he will be back in play, hes going to be the new coaches top priority though. Also While UCLA is winning its games, they don't look all that good. Still think it would be awesome to still land Wilkes and Waters. -

That's fair. And I'll give Crean this with how stacked MSU looks for next year probably a good year to pick for a rebuild year -
Glad he got paid recently. He deserved it. at this rate not sure he will get another deal

And if we get another Max B I'll be the first to congratulate Crean. But experienced big men misused by their previous coach don't grow on trees. -

Here's a crazy thought you don't recruit your QB replacement the year before they are needed. I'm not sure why you are trying to argue the QB situation. If He already accepted blame for it he knows it's an issue. -

The reality is we chased how many 5 stars and got none. That's not realistically a good thing. I don't know the budget it's fair to assume that if the previous few years have all been over half million then 2017 probably had around a half million on it yes there is another signing period are we in the mix with any of the kids? Doesn't seem like it we have exhausted our primary and secondary targets pretty much everybody we watched during the July Evals is beyond us at this point It's based on what happened this year. They have a higher rated recruiting class spending a fraction of the money. -

We're still spending big boy program money and getting Purdue level success though. That's the issue. And yes maybe we can win like that which is great. But why pay for the 5 star restaurant and get the corner joints food? We are spending enough money that we shouldn't have down years. And we are one Davis injury next year to having a REALLY bad year. Last years team could weather JBJs injury because we had a 4 star on the bench. -

I understand we have been spending money for 4 years that doesn't make this years failures somehow more acceptable? Not sure why that's so hard to get. I also don't get why as our budget has skyrocketed our results have gotten worse. -

The guy hasn't learned pass yet in his life but all he needs is a year? No lagow just isn't the guy. My expectations are a guy that can hit a wide open guy more often than not -

No I'm not you can put words in my mouth if you have to in order feel better about our recruiting misses then so be it. We clearly spent the money these last few years to win some five stars and to stay atop the big ten. Instead we are left with hoping to finish in the top 5 in the big ten next year. We did not need to spend over half a million dollars to get the recruits we got. We poured money into countless recruits we had no chance with Bamba and Diallo for example. When you overspend and throw money away it's not good utilization of resources. You recruit 5 stars because they give you a higher probability of competing than these diamonds in the rough. We spent the money to get 5 stars and to be assured of competing for the Big Ten next year. Instead we got a chance to be top 5 next year and IF some diamonds in the rough work out being back near the top in 2018. So tired of the excuses last year it was how can you expect Crean to recruit with his job on the line like it was. Despite the fact Alford and Groce seem to be recruiting on the hot seat just fine. Now it's we don't know how the recruiting will turn out. But that's not the point. We are spending the money to where we shouldn't have to worry about Diamonds working out. And we aren't getting it. It seems like our recruiting was more successful before the huge cash infusion. -

We over paid for 1 4 star and 2 diamonds in the rough. So yes I can argue the ROI isn't there. Even if both work out we still grossly overpaid for them. -

But those results are from PAST recruiting successes. Those successes are easier to attain with high level talent which is why the current recruiting failures have people concerned. We're worried about the future. -

Well I get that. But going further back in time only increases the amount spent on the 2017 recruits which makes the ROI worse for 2017. For example we pursued Wilkes for what 5 years? Really bad ROI. -

Our starters have averaged about 24 minutes these last 2 games. That's enough to keep them sharp without wearing them down -

A lot of that was do to us losing all our quality non conference games last year as well as dropping the ball in the BTT. -

Oh I agree just stating what I have to assume is Creans logic. -

The upsides I see is that Crean gets more time to rest starters for the big ten season. As well as try out lineups and give young players more PT. -
Honestly I'd be a lot more ok with losing to UK than UCLA. A) Their glory days are in the past just like us B) Alford doesn't have a ring as a coach like Cal does And other fine point we wasted resources for like 5 years.
