Michigan made a nice run but Painter is light years ahead. Michigan gives up open looks like IU does

Painter > May.
Painter also better than almost everyone so that’s no sleight. However if we have May next year, Purdue will still have the better coach.

I got the laughing no from a former player on the back to back ff teams. A core group of coaches and players from those teams are very close. I’m very good friends with the players brother. We were never close like some say here.

UCLA's entire team minus Kobe Johnson has eligibility left. The emphasis on recruiting a bunch of 5* in each class and making them the cornerstone of your team no longer exists. I have zero concerns with Cronin's ability to recruit, especially in the Midwest with IU's NIL resources.
By the way, need some board consistency. You say that his recruiting sucks while @Certified Sunshine Pumpersays he underachieves with a ton of top talent. Which is it?

That is in part what went wrong. Discussions about numbers isn’t necessarily a closing sign and Dolson believed that it was and that throwing big numbers at him would change the fact that his family was never on board. It was never going to happen and we wasted a lot of time and indirectly led to us hiring Woodson. Dolson not understanding the situation caused a lot of people to move/react/get involved and there was never a need for any of it.

They also beat a healthy Tennessee team by 30 earlier this year and just won at Auburn.

If the rumored Stevens money is available for others then we'd better be aiming higher than Mick Cronin.
And I did not see someone suggest Steve Alford. He might the be best coach of guys that played at IU but that is a pretty low bar to clear.

From my point of view I’m going to be over the moon for any high major college basketball coach or mid major or D2 grinder or the white whale to take over this program. Imagine loving college basketball as much as I do and having a NBA guy with 0 college basketball coaching experience to over the program you are invested in. Most on here know my passion for all college basketball and not just IU. I gave it a chance but knew it was doomed from the start. These last 4 years have been a grind to watch and follow however from my view No doubt IU has better days ahead. No matter who is hired most on here is going to give that head coach a chance. Good discussions so far today. Keep them coming

Appreciate your post, and it's giving me a chance to maybe clear some things up. I don't know Brad Stevens or anyone in his family. I never worked for or with Brad Stevens. I left the Celtics before Stevens got there, but many of the same people still work there and I have an understanding of how the team, ownership and operations work, etc..
I wasn't in basketball ops, but was in a role on the business side as close to basketball ops as you can be without being in it.
I spoke to a high-ranking Celtics person who is an NBA institution behind the scenes. I visited him shortly after Woodson was hired. I asked him if he thought Stevens would ever coach in college again, and it was an emphatic, laughing "No". He gave some reasons and the "no" was emphatic. There is more to it, but not going into all of the details.
For those that would reply, "well, Stevens wouldn't tell him if he was considering IU.", his "no" wasn't because he asked Stevens directly, you're not going to do that in that situation, it's because he has spent the better part of 10+ years working directly with him, working with Celtics ownership and executives, etc., etc. My person is an extremely trusted person in the NBA.
With that said, people change, times change and circumstances change. Based on what I know, I'd be shocked if Stevens coaches in college in the near future, but there are also things like the ownership situation that are different this time around. I'll just be shocked if it happens.

Mark Few has been reported on about a hundred jobs over the years. Yet he never moves.
Out of all the names thrown around, I probably believe that one the least.

Whatever we are willing to spend on a guy who hasn’t coached college in 12 years should be offered to the very best coaches in the game right now.

That Brad Stevens was ever close to becoming the IU coach last time. I beleive Dolson reached out, he had too, but it was never happening.
I also don't believe Stevens used IU to get his President of Basketball Ops role. Ainge was always leaving at the end of the season, and Stevens had been earmarked to move to the front office.
I was surprised he left the sideline all together, thought it would be more in a Popovich role, but the wheels of Stevens becoming head of bball ops were in play before the IU job opened.
