You’ve always had that. The difference is just where the money went.
As far as salary cap I’m agnostic. It probably helps IU to not have one. Lots of sports leagues don’t have one.

Says who?
NIL is nothing more than someone getting money for their own personal worth on the market. That is exactly what this is.

Logically what you’re saying doesn’t make any more sense than requiring Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg to disgorge billions in profits because they started their businesses while in college.
But I get it as a fan. The problem is there’s so much money now, even compared to something like the 80s or 90s that it has to go somewhere. Personally I think it is nutty to let all these dopey coaches and ADs get rich while the kids get nothing. If the NCAA really ever cared about amateurism—and they didn’t—they would’ve maintained that coaches and administrators couldn’t be paid over a certain limit.
It probably ends with the schools paying the players. Or maybe multi year NIL deals. That’ll help return some stability at least. I feel bad for the small schools the most. This hasobviously helped IU and maybe saved Woodys job.

I don't think it has anything to do with loving NIL or not. It was bizarre that they could not make money off their OWN NAMES. That doesn't make them professional or amateur (which was always a silly argument) it just makes them like everyone else.

I preferred a shooting guard that can create for themselves, and others first. We needed a scorer more than JUST a shooter. I preferred Carlyle at the 2, more so than any other option we have seen thus far.
His catch and shoot #s, spot-up #s were as good as any FR in a Power 5 conference.

Here’s some semi-drunk ramblings on this dormant subject…
I was on the fire Woody bandwagon at the end of the season. Things just looked bleak. But I’ll be damned, he and the money bags have surprised me and at least salvaged a talented and interesting team for next year.
The coaching this last year was beyond frustrating. Woody’s scheme is archaic… and I’m not sure you can teach an old dog new tricks. The one glimmer of hope is his 2012-13 Knicks team that finished 2nd in the East shot and made more 3 pointers than any team in the NBA. His other 2 seasons in NY they were in the top quarter of the league in both categories. We don’t have the roster to do that necessarily, but it shows that he at least must understand the value of the 3 point shot.
The other wild thing is he’s probably our best in game coach since Sampson or maybe even Knight, which underscores the kind of brain drain we’ve witnessed the last couple decades.
I’m hoping for a contender or a flame out. If we have a marginal tourney team, I’m worried Woody continues to skate by. Let’s just make a hard turn in one direction or the other so we can at least make the decision easy for the admin and save all of us the unwanted anxiety.

It’s how Coach K got it done. It’s how Oh golly gee Roy Williams got it done. It’s how Calipari, Pitino, Izzo (if you believe Purdue fans concerning Dawson), and Self have all gotten it done. Notice that’s basically the coaches of the top blue bloods over the last 30 years. Also that’s when IU fell behind. I’m thrilled the boosters have stepped up to get IU back into the mix. Applaud them all.

"God forbid?" You are posting exactly that way, and that's fine by me! For real...go for it!
God forbid someone disagrees with you tho. ;)

Yup. UConn fans don't seem to have any issue about ponying up a nice NIL payday for McNeeley.
The kids getting paid doesn't bother me at all... just want a more sustainable model personally.
We should all be happy as Indiana fans that the status quo is favorable for our program landing top talent.

Incoming freshman 100% need to not ask for much. Proven commodities trump devloping a player at this point, particularly when a school may see the fruits of their development go elsewhere after a year.

We never doubted. Portal recruiting > high school recruiting. Never even questioned it. Lol

As much as I hate the whole process, portal season progresses at a much faster pace than high school recruiting.

Hoping we get to see Ballo, MM, Gallo, KC and Rice on the floor together at times this year, that lineup could be really fun.

You know I just thought about it...
We suck at shooting...
Woody had to take care of our shooting in the portal.
Does he go out and get shooters? NOPE.
Goes out and grabs an offensive rebounder for all the bricks.

I think the big thing that is missed is that this is a pretty big Board of Trustees failure...once again. Kathy with a C can't spin out of this factoid from the article and it shows exactly how the 'group consensus' of the board produces crap.
-------------------
When an 18-person search committee was charged with selecting IU’s next president in 2020, they narrowed the list to four finalists — none of whom included Whitten. According to Steve Sanders, a Maurer School of Law professor who interviewed people involved with the search, the Board of Trustees rejected all four finalists and chose four new finalists externally, this time including Whitten.
---------------------
So in essence, here are the issues REGARDLESS of politics:
-- the search committee produces four names and the BOT chose to ignore it completely. If you want to stay in good graces with the people you are working with, you don't simply wholeheartedly ignore their entire work. Horrible, horrible PR and sets whoever they do hire up for an immediate adverse relationship. Better move: keep one or two names from the original list and add your own to a list of finalists.
-- the BOT then violated public access law by failing to produce documents in a timely manner that should have been available through the freedom of information act.
-- Part of the documents they tried to hide indicate that former president McRobbie was paid over $500,000 for 'consulting' work for Whitten in the first six months of her job.....to those involved in the original search committee, this says to them that the BOT chose to ignore candidates they recommended and chose a candidate who wasn't qualified and needed a half a million dollars worth of training.
So to me this says the no confidence vote for Whitten is really a no confidence vote in the procedures that the BOT has adopted. Sure, there are politics at play but it goes beyond disagreement between the president and staff.

@Stuhoo in the same breath, I do agree, that there are LAYERS to this kind of stuff. By no means would I know any sort of details. I am simply going off of the article.

It's an interesting situation.
My take?
Pres Whitten makes a very favorable impression, both in style and substance, every time I've heard her speak publicly; however, Unless you regularly interact with a leader it it very difficult to know, and pretty speculative to claim to understand whether that leader is irrevocably flawed.

Between Edey leaving, new schools joining, and all the transfer portal turnover (especially with the Pac 12 being raided more or less) I am hopeful we see the start of a new play style trend in the B10. Conference will certainly look very different next year.

So much arguing as we start locking players up. Personally I'm glad to be in conversations about WHICH talented player we are bringing in. Two years ago we were googling Michael Durr.

Disagree strongly! Over the past 20-30 years, that small cheating ‘minority’ has solidly been the UK’s, Duke, Kansas (since forever), UNC, Arizona, Louisville..probably MSU in the B1G… and others that are continuously lauded as the true blue bloods with the top tier coaches. Strong argument to be made that having a really good cheating system in place has had more impact on winning than having an outstanding coach.
Open up no rule NIL and player transferability where everyone’s able to compete on a more level playing field-and surprise…all of a sudden there seems to be a great deal of parity as we’ve seen immediately in the past 2-3 years. Even some mid-major boats have been lifted. I get it’s out of control, creates mercenaries for hire chasing the top $$$, creates farm system of mid majors, compromises team/player continuity that we all historically have enjoyed. But, the second a ‘cap’ is instituted there’s going to be a meeting of Kansas boosters directly connected to Bill Self to determine how they can ‘help’ overcome any potential cap obstacles - just like they used when there was a very specific cap…$0!
Someone mentioned above-likely move is to a model where players are employees and have formal contracts. Agree, and thats fine - we just better be competitive in the process for determining how much to put on the table…and for finding ‘supplemental’ revenue streams..cause that’s where it jumps to - immediately. Or we can dwell in middle of the road…and keep pointing to the ole banners for another 40 years.

Just wanted to add a comment on the bag dropping.
Id recommend the fanbase not villainize the bag dropping from Indiana but instead be happy we can win bag drops now.
its been going on for eternity in college basketball and for the most part those dropping the biggest bags are winning the most games.
I can pretty much assure you if we stop dropping bags the fanbase will have a lot more to worry about than we already do.
id recommend embracing it and just leaving it out of the equation. It’s been a part of high level recruiting forever and now it just expands into mid level recruiting as well.
Be happy we can compete in that for now and cross your fingers the staff uses its salary cap wisely.
