AZ Hoosier reacted to IUCrazy2 in Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters
The only tough offseason has been the fact Woodson is coaching these players putting a damper on the enthusiasm about landing them.
We all want to win, most of those in this thread don't think Woodson gives us the best chance to do that. However, since some of his backers enjoy crowing about how awesome we are doing (once again) in the offseason, be prepared for some pretty harsh blowback if the wins don't match the expectations the roster should be setting.

Yep. They've given Woodson enough rope to hang himself. The proof is in the playing season. Tired of winning the off-season and not the season that counts.
God forbid anyone posts in this thread that isn't totally pumping sunshine. Happy he's got some talent, but gonna hold my excitement until he actually does something with it.

I'm tired of winning April... I want it to translate to B1G and tourney success.

I pray that was a condition for admittance to the B1G.

But "this" isn't "that". Doing personal appearances or sponsorship deals is one thing. There is nothing about that with the NIL deal where schools are paying players $1M to attend their school and play a sport in exchange for that money. What we now have is professional athletes disguised as amateurs.
At least the pro sports leagues have some sort of salary cap in an attempt to bring parity. There is no such "cap" on NIL spending, so it's truly a free-for-all. And if the NCAA (or some other authority) were to implement a cap, it would just return us to the days of under-the-table payments.
Sadly, it is what it is and it is completely out of control.

Well, no other coach in college basketball was likely offering to play the game from the inside out.
Ballo's mom didn't raise no dummy.

Yes, I went through this surgery. I'm guessing he has to be on his last week or two.

It's interesting. On one hand, I see the vision for what you're describing and really like it. I don't know the Evansville guy well enough to say how good he is on D or rebounding, but IMO that is what we need to prioritize when pairing a big with Malik. I think (hope?) Malik grows into a true stretch 4 role on offense this year, in which case, I like the approach of having Ballo as the dominant big cleaning up things inside. On the defensive side... when Ballo sits this year, do we slide MR over to the 5? How long can that last? Can the Evansville kid/Elijah Malone play the 5 on D and rebound well for a couple of segments each game?
Who we get as a 3rd guard/shooter and the back up big to round things out IMO makes a pretty huge difference for next year... what does the bench look like - Gallo is a good start to it. With Conwell likely looking for a bigger role than we can give, not sure who the next best option becomes... I'm not particularly moved by Essegian but realistically doubt you can get someone much better than a former B10 freshman all conference, even though he did end up out of the rotation at Wisconsin..... Watching curiously!

It seems we're asking or trying to get Malik to do things that are not really in his wheelhouse. He's not a stretch 4. We're heck-bent on fitting the square peg in that round hole. Just my opinion. Just seems like we try to get talent but never figure out how to put the puzzle pieces together.

Funny thing is we played more 3 guard lineups in the 80's then we do now

Over half the roster is FR & SOPH…can’t wait for Woody’s response that ‘we’re a young team’ when facing struggles and missing expectations in January. Many new folks too…so ‘we’re still learning each other’ when struggling in February. Oops, wrong thread…sorry! Hope this works and we win…got my knife and fork polished and on the ready to eat crow!!

Remember what Bob Knight said about Dale Brown?
(“It didn’t look good,” Knight said. “In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance.” )
That's exactly how I feel about Mediocre Mike Woodson. The Cooks and Simons can buy him all of the talent in the world, but Woodson will still screw it up. He can't coach his way out of the proverbial paper bag.

Just read that the Cooks and Simons have bought Bello for Woodson. Let's see what he can do with him... still have my doubts.
