Man if UK can’t land a top coach, who the heck are we going to land next year?

I haven’t heard anything positive about Pope. I think he’s gone in 3 years.
Calipari choked in the tournament the past three years which is why UK fans wanted him gone so bad (imagine them with our results), but his teams were still pretty good in the regular season/conference play. 39-15 (72.2%) in the SEC the past three seasons. Woody, for example, is 31-29 in a worse conference. Maybe the Pope does well but I highly doubt he’ll win enough to satisfy the UK fanbase.

Smarter, more engaged and engaging, more connected and committed to the program, runs a modern offense, and will cost a ton less.
A good day for UK basketball, whether their dumbass fans understand that or not.
Calipari just finished t-2nd in the SEC at 13-5. He had another great class coming in. He’s not as good as he was pre-covid, but saying Pope is a “significant upgrade” is an exaggeration… He has 0 tournament wins in 9 seasons as a coach. You don’t push Calipari out to hire someone with his resume.

Given our own depressing coaching reality, it’s hard to feel too much joy over another school’s struggles to find a coach, but it is nice seeing the same thing happen to UK. Though it does make our inevitable coaching search seem like an uphill climb if even UK is struggling to land someone. Should’ve just went with Dusty.

Coach Cog really is as polar opposite from the last staff as you could be. Exactly what the program needed. Idk if it’ll work out because it’s still IUFB at the end of the day, but if it doesn’t work it won’t be from lack of effort.

Hoosier in Texas is definitely one of them.

He clearly is attached to the staff, if not on it. The only way someone could possibly be that confident is if they were getting all their information in real-time directly from the staff.
Plus someone would only get that angry if they’re personally invested in IU’s outcomes, imo. I don’t think he’s actually on the staff but I do think there’s a strong possibility he’s attached to the staff.

I’m not a big fan and frankly wish he wouldn’t have returned so we’d have another scholarship to use. Though Woody probably would’ve just left it open.

This is the contract provision people are referencing. The language is pretty broad, and you’d need to look at the rest of the contract to see what the consequences would be.

They’re actually contractually obligated to not think about basketball this week.

I don’t want to get in trouble with @Class of '66 Old Fart for being off topic so I won’t post anymore about it here after this. Anyone (well especially @Class of '66 Old Fart) can PM me. When he played over 20 minutes we didn’t lose. Game winning buckets. Game winning plays. Some people know how to play and are winners. Some are not.
Leal played 18 minutes against Purdue. We lost by 20. I don’t think 2 more minutes would have made the difference. 3 players scored 58 of our 65 points against MSU. Leal scored 0 of the 65 and you want to attribute the win to Leal.
Leal was a backup on a mediocre IU team that missed the tournament last season. If we want to be better than that next season we’ll need better guards. Like we had during the best season of Woodson’s tenure when Leal played 24 minutes all season. Playing Leal more isn’t the answer. He's there for locker room chemistry, leadership, and continuity.

10 minutes ago, IU - Kaulie said:When he played big minutes we won.
He hit two game winning buckets. When teams tried to iso him and go after him on defense he held up and made big plays. Game winning plays.
He won in high school. It won’t fit some people’s narratives that like to look at individual stats, but the bottom line is he is a winner. Some people are and some people are not. Leal is.
IU was 8-7 in games in which Leal played double digit minutes. Only 2 of the 8 wins were against tournament teams: MSU and Wisconsin. Leal scored 3 points in those two games. IU won because Ware went off. 27/11 in one, 28/12 in the other.
If Anthony Leal plays significant minutes for IU next year then Mike Woodson whiffed in the portal on guards.

Nah if you want to rapture Mike Woodson, you have to come see Mike Woodson.

Sounds like someone we unfortunately know.
“he couldn't have been too surprised - refusing to go to post game shows after losses and shunning anyone that criticized him. He had zero relationship with the AD.
he hired assistants who couldn't develop players or teach fundamentals, and he surrounded himself by yes men who insulated from the world outside.
He knew the anger was out there.” -

You told the poster who posted it to grow up lol. Your very first post on the subject. That’s “simply inquiring”?

6 minutes ago, AH1971 said:I absolutely fail to see how golfing on a Sunday morning in April (while the current season is still ongoing) is tied to the success/failure of a season that starts 7 months from now. During a dead recruiting week no less.
And if you don’t care about portal success, why go out of your way to try and bring optics into a situation that doesn’t exist in regards to recruiting, that again aren’t in play because it is a dead recruiting week?
Again, nobody likes a whiner.
I mean, you started this all by whining about a poster posting “L.O.L.” with a tweet of Woodson golfing.
If we can’t have a laugh about that when we’re stuck with a crappy coach while Purdue is playing for a NC, what can we laugh at?

1 minute ago, AH1971 said:I’m not picking fights with anybody, I’m simply pointing out hypocrisy when I see it. Doesn’t bother me at all that some want Woodson fired, I would have supported a coaching change this offseason had one been made. I just find it funny that you threw shade at Woodson for golfing and not recruiting (during a dead period) in one post and another post admit you actually don’t even care who Woodson recruits. Nobody likes a whiner.
Do you fail to see how it’s all connected? I don’t care who he recruits because I’m tired of winning the offseason every offseason to turn around and be mediocre at best when the season gets here. I don’t care to puff my chest in April about a “top 5 portal class.” That’s meaningless. What matters is what that class does when the season gets here. And what that class can accomplish is hindered by the coach in charge. Best case scenario is Woodson buys enough talented mercenaries that even he can’t screw things up. But that’s unlikely. Most likely outcome is he puts together another mediocre season, sneaks into the tournament, loses the first week, and then gets extended because it’s Indiana and 3 out of 4 tournaments is a big accomplishment now.

Because a large percentage of posters want him fired and this thread helps prevent those posts from spilling into other threads. Why does it bother you so much? I don’t go into threads I don’t want to read to pick fights with people for posting in those threads.

He’s been a D1 head coach for 9 seasons. 0 tournament wins. 0 conference championships and 0 conference tournament championships. Nothing about his resume says top coach. It’s not as bad of a hire as Mike Woodson was, but it’s also not a hire you push John Calipari out to make.
