Well, he’s in the portal so he doesn’t have a team right now. I don’t have any issue in a kid trying to generate interest for himself and his decision.

Seriously though, what’s wrong with it? I’m confused. It’s no different from any of the other ‘hype’ videos that players put out before announcing their decisions.

I honestly don’t see anything wrong with that video at all...

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

That is something that I was thinking about. I've seen a lot of "player X is the kind of guy we don't recruit and then he lights us up years down the road," but how often does that actually happen? Only a few that I can think of. We just remember the ones that do and then forget about the guys who end up being meh.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Good for him. Maybe he comes to Assembly Hall and scores 30 on us, maybe he never breaks the rotation at Purdue. Who knows. I feel good about Coach Woodson and the players he's going after. He's offered a good number of players in the 2022 class and Smith wasn't one of them. I'm not convinced Smith is a Big 10 caliber player, but even if he is I don't think Coach Woodson will have any problems finding talented guards of his own to play for IU.

Two free throws are worth the same as a putback dunk on a team's rim protector. But you cannot measure the latter's worth by the scoreboard alone.

I don't blame him at all for picking Purdue and picking them fast (assuming that he does). They're a good academic school with a good basketball coach and program. It's just that "how much he wants to play for IU" has been something touted by his supporters. If that was true, you'd think he would wait a little bit to see if IU offers him before popping for Purdue.

Doesn't really sound like someone who is dying to be a Hoosier if he commits to Purdue days after they offer him, tbh..

Ivey was ranked #89 in his class, Furst is #56, and Kaufman is #34. They're why that team wouldn't be Northwestern. Replace them with guys of Leal and Galloway's caliber then they probably would be. Of the guys that @btroesch14 mentioned, Luke Goode was the only top 100 kid at #97. Leal and Galloway were #156 and #157 in their class, and Smith doesn't have a 247 composite ranking. I have no problem at all recruiting top 100ish in-state kids, but when we start getting deeper into classes than that it kind of feels like we're going after lower ranked kids because they're from Indiana. With the recruiting reach that our new staff has we shouldn't need to do that. We shouldn't need to be as regionally focused as Archie was.

I think Lander will be a lot better than what he showed last season. If he hadn't reclassified he'd be coming to a college campus as a 5 star recruit, and likely the top point guard in his class. Everything went wrong for him last year, from the coaching system to Covid hurting his preseason development. He came a year early and then didn't get the preseason training. If he doesn't look any better this year then ok, but I'm not writing him off at this point due to how weird of a year last year was. Sometimes players are in bad situations and break out when they’re in new ones. Look at Johnny Juzang from UCLA. Top 40 recruit. He reclassified and headed to UK as a freshman. Played 12 mpg and averaged 2.9 ppg. He transfers to UCLA and leads them to a Final Four the very next year. Scores 29 points against Gonzaga. Some kids just reclassify when they shouldn’t. I think Lander falls into that category. I expect him to be a different player under Woody, and so I don’t think point guard is a big position of need. This is a kid I'd like to see us go after. Top 25 in his class, originally from Illinois and currently playing at La Lumiere. 2023 four-star PG Jeremy Fears seeing high major recruitment heat up (247sports.com) There are tons of really good guards out there. I feel good about Coach Woodson being able to get one or two of them. I just really don't see a reason to take a gamble on Smith unless we strike out on our other options. He's not the level of recruit we should be targeting if we have national contender aspirations. Because I think Lander will be very good for us, I don’t think we need multiple point guards in this class. There are many point guards I’d rather us get than Smith in this class.

We have Rob Phinisee, Xavier Johnson, and Khristian Lander on the roster. All three have at least one year of eligibility left after this upcoming season. Braden Smith isn't someone who is going to come in and start right away, so even if all three of the above guys leave we'd still need to bring in another point guard in addition to Smith.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

I just don't really see a need to rush an offer. I've seen a lot of people talk about how good his school season was, and his numbers definitely look good. But his school season ended on March 6th. We're now 2 days away from May. Purdue is still the only high-major school that has offered him a scholarship. Notre Dame hasn't offered. Ohio State hasn't. Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Michigan State have not offered. Butler hasn't even offered. So, we're far from the only high-major school to be hesitant to pull the trigger. It seems like most are taking the wait and see approach. Even if he commits to Purdue and then explodes over the summer, he can't sign until November. Plenty of time for a flip. Right now we don't even have a scholarship available for CJ Gunn next year. Those things work themselves out, but we don't know how many scholarships we will have available and as the roster stands right now point guard isn't a position of need.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

They just signed Brian Waddell and I’m not sure he’s a Big 10 player. It’ll be a few years before he’s contributing at the least. Will Smith still be a low ranked three star at the end of the summer? I have no idea. But even if he moves up to the ~150 range I’m still not really interested. I want us consistent bringing in guards Tamar Bates’ caliber. Top 25, top 50. If we do that enough of them will work out for us to succeed. I watch Smith’s highlights and just don’t see what some of you guys see. I don’t see a future starting Big Ten point guard. Doesn’t mean that I’m right and everyone else is wrong, that’s just my opinion.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

It’s not just that he isn’t ranked high. He isn’t ranked at all on the 24/7 composite. He’s ranked 11th in the state. I know that you think rankings are meaningless, but they’re not. There are people whose entire careers are doing these rankings. And they’re good at their jobs. They get it right more often than not. Purdue is the only P5 program to have offered him a scholarship at this point. They’re competing with Montana, Appalachian State, IUPUI, and Toledo. If he wasn’t playing in Indiana and Woody offered an undersized, unranked three star point guard we’d be wondering what the heck he has thinking.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Time will tell if he’s actually good enough to play at Purdue. Their program is in a stable enough position where they can take a chance on a low ranked 3 star. We’re not. We need highly talented kids who can make immediate impacts. Everything Woody has done so far tells me he’s going to recruit at a high level. From the type of player Woody has been going after so far, I don’t think Smith fits that. Smith will be a distant memory if Woody can reel in a 5 star guard in this class.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Kyle Guy was a McDonald’s All-American, so no. Is Braden Smith going to be a McDonald’s all American? Because right now, Braden Smith has been offered by Purdue, and who else? Montana, Appalachian State, Toledo. Purdue is more than willing to bring in under the radar recruits and redshirt them, as shown by the Carmel kid they just signed. Let’s see what other P5 programs come calling with scholarship offers first..
  17. That is the most boring hype video I've ever seen, lol. Perfect troll job. It's absolutely perfect for the grumpy Facebook crowd.

Not saying that you want to be right or that you want to win an internet argument, just that if my opinion ends up looking silly because I relied on what I mentioned, it's not a big deal because I've got nothing at stake. If Coach Woodson and his staff think he's good enough to prioritize then that's all that matters.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

I’m not the one recruiting him, and I’m not someone who has to coach against him, so honestly it’s really not important enough to me to take the time to watch entire games. Highlight tapes, offer lists, rankings/reports, and physical measurements give me enough to work with. If all that doesn’t give me the full story that watching games would and I lose an internet argument, oh well.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

I’ve said why I think Lander is better. Just as Lander’s videos “didn’t do anything for you,” Smith’s didn’t for me. I don’t see a player who I think IU should be prioritizing when I see his videos. Lander was the #1 point guard in his class before he reclassified. Smith isn’t even nationally ranked on 24/7. I don’t think the people who do this for a living are that wrong on both of these players, for the guy who isn’t ranked to be better than the guy who was ranked #1 pg in his class. You think that they are. That’s perfectly fine. You’ve clearly made up your mind on Smith, so we’ll see how it shakes out.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Lander would’ve looked great last year if he had been playing against high school players like he should have been. He’s a kid who probably shouldn’t have reclassified, but it didn’t hurt him since it ended up being a free season. Yes, this is just a highlight video. But Lander can play. He’s quick off the dribble. He’s explosive. He has big hands for a 6’2 guard. He has good length. Archie Miller can’t coach guards. He didn’t have his guards playing in transition. He didn’t have his guards attacking the basket for the most part. He couldn’t even use Romeo Langford properly. The player in these highlights is a completely different player than what we saw last year. I don’t think the player in these videos was just a mirage, and I don’t think we can judge him off a weird Covid year where he came a year early, didn’t get the usual offseason training, and played for a bad offensive coach.

Smith isn’t going to come in as a freshman and be able to start, plus we will have a facilitator in Khristian Lander. He was a top 30 recruit even after he reclassified. Things went about as bad for him as they possibly could’ve. He reclassified, missed out on a bunch of summer and preseason training opportunities because of Covid restrictions, and then spent the year playing for an offensively incompetent head coach. But even then, he showed flashes of the kind of player he can be. Woodson’s offensive scheme is exactly the type of offense a guard like Lander flourishes in. A full offseason with a coach who can actually coach guards will do wonders for him. Additionally, Xavier Johnson has two years of eligibility left. He was 17th in the country in assists per game at 5.7. We won’t be lacking facilitators in 2022.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Jerome Hunter wasn’t a top 50 recruit, and he’s never been the same since he suffered his injury. Look at Bob Knight’s title teams. His 1976 title team had guys drafted #1, #2, #7, and #11 in their respective drafts. In total, that team had 7 guys picked in the NBA draft. His 1981 title team had 10 guys who were drafted. Three guys were first round picks, two guys were second round picks, and Landon Turner very well may have been picked in the first or second round if he hadn’t been paralyzed. His 1987 title team had 3 second round picks on it. I don’t know what any of those players’ high school rankings were, or even how they did high school rankings 30, 40 years ago. But the teams that he won championships with were loaded with talent. If you load your team up with top 50 recruits these days, you’re going to do quite well year in and year out.

(2022) PG Braden Smith to Purdue

Exactly. I think when we landed Rob Phinisee and then went after Darius Garland is a good example of what we’re talking about. Rob was a top 150 recruit, Garland was number 14 in his class. Rob just came off a junior season where he averaged 7 ppg and Garland is averaging 18 ppg as an NBA starter. Garland didn’t work out in college because he tore a knee ligament, but injuries can happen to anyone. That’s the kind of talent gap we’re talking about between top 25 guys and top 150 guys. There are outliers of course, but they’re just that - outliers.
