You guys keep bringing up the two bright fail moments of Eric.Garcia and Fears.
About a week after that terrible Fears interview Kenya spent 45 minutes on the podcast. IU is apparently willing to take the very few cringe worthy moments to get to the really good stuff
How about the hundred + times he was funny and relatable? Did you hear his Kenya interview the other day when Freddie McSwain calls in from Luxembourg? His Bruiser Flint stuff? Pizza with Xavier Johnson?
The guys that get a chance to interact for the most part lovvvvvve it.

So let me run a little against the grain here. For some (hi Hova!) a lot against the grain.
I will start with a summary of my thoughts on Eric Pankowski handling IU’s NIL: HELL YESSS HELLLLLLLLLLL YESSSSSSSSS!!!!
Yes, Eric Pankowski pushes to the edge of the page , but the guy is a monster success as a media influencer, a hard worker, and at times, maybe even a visionary.
He takes risks, is ahead of the curve, knows how to raise and make money, works damn hard, and maybe most importantly, he sweats, bleeds, and drools Cream and Crimson.
The man is a proven success, and he’s a major asset that’s on our side.
I am more careful in my manner than most—it’s a product of what I need to be to succeed. Eric has a completely different dynamic for success; he is a bonafide Hollywood producer and originator.
My 18 year old daughter could give a rat’s @$$ about IU basketball, but if I told her the guy who created Apple TV Carpool Karaoke was handling a promotion she’d immediately think that’s the real deal. Also a WWE promoter? That’s primo stuff. 17 year old recruits and 19 year old players probably agree.
Guys like Eric aren’t afraid to take chances and they screw up now and then—that’s part of the deal. So, if you’re a middle aged guy who eats at Applebee’s, thinks we should only play Mellencamp at Assembly Hall, and packs the same sandwich for work everyday? That’s okay, but that style doesn’t contribute to beating UK and Kansas.
The NCAA has decided that capitalism is allowed in college sports—let’s roll with a guy that’s great at it.
Read the bio friends, read the bio:

Mike Woodson would definitely be in my top 10, my top 5. Dude played 12 years in the NBA, coached 25 years in the NBA, the highest level of basketball plus they added Matta. Where did Beard play? Oh he went to one final game and loves Texas. His daughters, and girlfriend is in Lubbock. We got the guy who loves IU

Sports and basketball in particular are the window to the rest of the world. You say Indiana university to someone abroad and they say “basketball” “Bobby Knight”. It keeps people like me that didn’t go there spending time and money. Its just hard to watch someone turn there back on what was one of the coolest things the state of Indiana had. I’ve said this before but if I was born 20 years later I don’t know that I ever would have become the fan I am and would have never tuned into games, traveled around the country to attend games, bought all the gear etc. the a hole is cashing checks he didn’t earn

    RE: Vonleh and TJD Discussion
This is where I don't understand some peoples perception of what we should be or shouldn't be recruiting.
Most everyone is saying TJD will be here multiple years and is not a OAD candidate but if TJD produces like many of you suggest or hope that he produces, I don't see him being here past 1 year.
BUT, If he doesn't produce the way people are expecting or the way this team needs, then he will be labeled as a bust or a disappointment.

This goes into my question a few months back, is our perceptions or expectations of recruiting flawed from the start.
How can we conceivably suggest that we ONLY recruit 4 and 5 * players who theoretically are your 10, 11, 12, 13 players (if you have been doing this for multiple years, if there were no transfers, no early leaves) as freshmen. We don't expect players 10, 11, 12, 13 to be major impacts in general.   However, if those 4* & 5* players don't make an impact in their 1st year, they are labeled as busts or transfer candidates.  Not to mention how the player feels about the situation and become transfers.  However, if we recruit lower rated players that may fit better or take more time to develop but better chance at staying with the program, the fan base complains that coach can't recruit.
Also, if our top players are leaving early due to Transfers or Professional Careers, then how do we ever become an experienced group with players who are upperclassmen.
There seems to be a major no win situation for high star recruits and coaches recruiting to our fan base.
It is extremely difficult to have it both ways unless you have a history of being a GREAT coach and winning at a high level (AKA DUKE) or are doing something illegal (or both).

I was one of the posters who chimed in and spoke about his sideline incident (based on what I saw in person), but was vocal that I wanted and hoped he would succeed here. No one can deny that when he is playing with confidence, protecting the ball and making smart decisions, he is an ABSOLUTE asset to this team. But... it is also hard to deny that there weren't times where his play absolutely had a negative impact on the game with repeated mistakes, ill shots, poor decisions with the ball, etc. Were there some openly calling for him to transfer? Yes. Are those same people allowed to change their opinion based on a player progressing, getting better and ultimately helping the team? Also, Yes! I understand the desire to call out those who were negative, but wouldn't it be a positive that that those who were once calling for a player to transfer are now in that players corner? It means the player is growing, learning and having a positive impact on the team. With that being said, I also agree that we should not "bash" kids, but I hope we all realize that that there is a difference between criticizing play/performance and making personal and unwarranted attacks or "bashes". This is a basketball board, where player performance will be discussed, both positive and negative, and that is where the discussion/criticism should be focused.
From the intel I have gotten, him and CAM have not always seen eye to eye over the past two seasons. With that being said, the way he finished the season last year was impressive, and this team will be drastically better if he can carry that into the upcoming season. I also hope he has an all conference year, heck all-american year Josh!

I agree with your point, the NCAA, ACC, Duke, all the broadcast partners, etc. all made millions off of Zion Williamson. That's absolutely accurate and true.
But at the same time, Zion himself also made tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars off the exposure and branding he received by playing college basketball. He would not have been the #1 pick if he came right out of high school and the branding and exposure he received playing college basketball will garner him a $100 million shoe deal which would not have happened if he was allowed to go the NBA right out of high school, as well as other endorsements.
Zion Williamson benefited incredibly by playing college basketball.

You quoted me and then said “keep posting YOUR narrative.” It’s not my narrative; it’s what happened. If you were referring to my original post, then quote my original post.
The narrative of the original post is that his system takes time to build and implement. That means recruiting players that work for his system and giving them time to develop; especially these first couple classes. Which is exactly why your references don’t apply.

My narrative? Exactly which part of my comment wasn’t a fact? That group was considered IU’s best recruiting class of all time, true or false? That group included the B1G’s all time leading scorer, true or false? Bob Knight recruited those players along with every other player on that team, did he not? Knight had been at IU for almost 20 years, had his system in place, and had already won his 3 titles, correct?
Apparently you must think none of those factors influence a team’s success.

There are plenty of statistics on both sides to support whatever anyone wants to believe. Bennett did not have overnight success because he brought in a pretty different style. He stuck to his principles and is seeing the payoff.
Archie is bringing in a totally different style, and he is also learning somethings along the way. Most here are pretty passionate about IU basketball, and we caught up in the season as it is unwinding. Realistically though, as much as we all wanted this to be a smooth and easy transition, we had to know it wouldn't. Having said that, no one could have imagined the skid we've endured in January and February.
I like Archie and think he will build success sooner than later. I do hope he can learn to make some changes in the future a little sooner than he has this season, but I also realize he is playing the hand he has been dealt to a certain extent. It's not often you can draw three  cards and end up with a straight flush. Most times you end up with a pair.

Those were not excuses. it was simple fact and data around the circumstances of the coaches you listed. I can't help it if you didn't do your homework.
Since you don't like when people disagree, and give data points to disagree, i'll turn things around....
What should be a reasonable time frame to install a dramatically different system/style?
What should be a reasonable time frame to populate a roster with quality player depth that fits the new system?
You said success in year 2 was the exception, but said a coach should be able to be successful before 3 years? So which is it? Are you talking about summer ball in year 2.5?
I'm still waiting on examples of coaches like Archie coming in from a lower conference, who inherit low talent, a sub .500 conf team, completely change a system, and are lights out in year 2? Nobody?
    Go ahead, keep dancing...

Good for those guys. Hopefully we see some nice translation to the floor.

Sure hope that post doesn't get misconstrued by others on the recruiting trail, though. Wouldn't want to risk losing recruits because people thought IU was preparing players to win a WWE title belt.

You've got to be kidding me with that. You're telling me because I don't feel like a hype video highlighting summer training, which may or may not be misleading because we don't know EXACTLY to what record and method our S&C coach was referring, should warrant a panic attack about the direction of our program.... I'm partly responsible for Crean's extended stay-cation in Bloomington? (yes, I know you meant it in a figurative sense)
First of all, I'm a little upset I'm just now finding out I had the power to influence that situation. You should have called me out sooner; I'd have fixed that situation well before 9 years rolled around.  Secondly, fans don't make that call. Your AD does. IUgradman will fill you in on his thoughts there.  It's a good thing you aren't a fan of a Louisville or Michigan State; you'd have done had the big one by now.
Let me be clear: for anyone who is SO concerned over that post and what it represents, it would be nice if Marshall could specify for you just what combine record he was referring to, when it was set, who set it, and what method was used. Tweet the man if it bothers you that much. But if the important people within Indiana University Men's Basketball don't see it as detrimental, then odds are we'll be ok. If Justin Smith goes to the combine in, say, 1-2 years and records a 42 inch "max vert" with a 2 step approach I'm sure he'll understand the difference between that and a full running start he used with Marshall.
I'll be done with this now so others can enjoy the board. My apologies to anyone I annoyed. I did feel the need to retort after being called out, but I'll refrain from now on.

I don't understand this line of thinking though.
He's just a freshman.  For the past few years, people were mad at the amount of transfers Crean had during his time here, wanting more players to stick around and develop.
I'd like to see Moore put in work and develop.  Remember, not every roster spot can be filled with guys who are going to get tons of playing time.  If all we ever get out of him is 12 minutes per game, some solid defense, along with 5 pts and a few rebounds per game, I think that would warrant a roster spot.

Absolutely disagree.  There is a right way to do things, and allowing students to "say what they want" is not the right way.  This was not about their legal right.  It would not have been a crime to get into this situation.  It would have been completely classless and people should be - for the sake of human decency first of all - WAY above it.

It's a different world now. Seven years ago the names Jerry Sandusky and Harvey Weinstein carried completely different meanings than they do today. Social media a bigger beast now, the public is much less forgiving, and victims are finally being empowered en masse. I don't think either Izzo or Dantonio survive this, whether it's their call or directed from above. This is a cloud that will hang over both of them for the rest of their tenures.

No one is being silenced. Handing out a card to 18,000 people saying IU is aware that MSU is in a world of sh*t and please represent our school with class while navigating this topic, then posting it on national TV and the internet for all to read is hardly sweeping anything under the rug. We don't need their mess making us look bad. It's an easy target right now and IU should be above it.

And what power does IU have over Tom Izzo getting fired? His program is getting grilled in the national media, the NCAA and criminal detective units are investigating, and he will be working under a new administration shortly that will likely come in to clean house. Nothing going on there is a secret to anyone and the appropriate measures will likely be taken shortly.
