Albers on Troy - Troy Williams is absolutely balling out in the NBA Preseason It’s the NBA preseason, I get it. Pointless to most. But not to fringe players trying to make the team, like former Indiana forward Troy Williams. Williams went undrafted, played in the Summer League with the Phoenix Suns, then turned down more money from the Oklahoma City Thunder and signed a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies that guaranteed him $150K. But the way he’s been playing lately, that number will be much higher. If Williams makes the Grizzlies’ 15-man roster, he will make $543K this season. “I just got off the phone with his agent,” said Boo Williams, Troy’s uncle and AAU giant. “Troy might be playing better than any rookie in the league right now. He looks good. He’s starting right now, but when Chandler Parsons comes back that’ll change, they have too much invested in him.” Will he make the team? “We’ve got one more game left,” Boo Williams said. “When I find out, I’ll let you know.” Williams absolutely balled out against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, going for 23 points in 41 minutes of a double-overtime win. Williams was 7-of-15 from the field, but get this — he made five 3-pointers on 11 attempts, including some highly contested ones late in the game. A little prospective on that — Williams made a total of 38 3-pointers in three seasons and 99 games at Indiana. And that was with the college 3-point line. If he can consistently make 3s in the NBA, he could have a nice long career in the league. Williams’ full stat line: 23 points, 7-15 FG, 5-11 3s, 4-5 FT, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 block, +19 (Note: At least 2 of those steals came against Houston’s regulars, including James Harden.) Here’s a video look at the night Williams had. I thought he was wrong for leaving early. Looks like I may have been the one that was wrong. -

2016-2017 Player Profile: Devonte Green Josh Margolis - Devonte Green has some big shoes to fill. The younger brother of San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green, the 6-foot-3 combo guard will be following in the footsteps of Yogi Ferrell and Isiah Thomas, donning the number 11 while at Indiana. Green, who has been playing varsity basketball since seventh grade, received offers from nearly 15 schools, including Arizona and Texas, before deciding on committing to As a senior at Long Island Lutheran, Green was one of four finalists for Mr. Basketball New York. Green led the team in scoring, putting up more than 20 points a game. “[Devonte]’s just a tremendous athlete and he had a couple of games where he rattled off seven or eight 3s for us,” Long Island Lutheran coach John Buck told Inside The Hall back in June. “He’s got that ability, he’s just got to keep the game very simple and stay very consistent.” Green is known as a scoring guard but has developed an all-around game to match. He averaged 6.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game in his senior season while leading the Crusaders in steals and blocks. “When he’s locked in defensively – and everyone talks about him offensively – but defensively was his greatest asset for us,” Buck said. “He’s really, really good on the ball. He plays very hard. He has the ability to do so many different things just looking at his stat line.” In fact, Crean said at media day last week that Green was second on the team in deflections through the first 10 or 11 practices. How much playing time Green receives his freshman year remains uncertain. The backcourt is already stacked with upperclassmen James Blackmon, Robert Johnson, and Josh Newkirk, as well as incoming top 60 guard Curtis Jones. It will be vital for Green to make the most of his early season minutes if he wants to be a significant part of the rotation once conference play comes around. Quotable: “Devonte just kept getting better and better. He’s exactly what we want the program to be about, improvement. It’s not just improving when you get to Indiana, it’s the improvement you make before that. Devonte was one of those people, as we watched, I wanted to like him, I did like him. But I needed to see more, and by the time we offered him a scholarship, I’d seen plenty and I don’t think we’re even close to seeing how much we’re going to see.” – Tom Crean speaking to the media in June. Indiana back in January. Green said the biggest factors in his decision were his relationship with the coach and the style of play. -

2016-2017 Player Profile: Grant Gelon Alex Bozich - The least heralded of Indiana’s 2016 recruiting class, Crown Point guard Grant Gelon arrives in Bloomington with a reputation as an elite shooter. As a senior in high school, Gelon averaged 14.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and shot nearly 39 percent on 3s. He was named an Indiana All-Star. “Nobody has worked harder at perfecting that craft than Grant has,” Clint Swan, Gelon’s high school coach, told Inside the Hall over the summer. “He’s worked very hard at making himself into a better shooter and not just relied on his gift as a shooter alone.” The key for Gelon will be to develop a more well rounded game that allows him to be a significant contributor at the Big Ten level. At 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, Gelon has excellent size for a guard. His shooting ability is Big Ten ready, but the rest of his game has room to grow. Indiana’s guard depth should allow Gelon to be brought along at a slower pace and grow into a role. “Compare that to Spike Albrecht (also of Crown Point) when he went to Michigan, they had two point guards,” Swan said this summer. “They had Trey Burke and Spike Albrecht. He was going to have to play and that kind of scared me a little bit. I thought that was sort of alarming that he was going to be called upon to play immediately. I think Grant is going to be able to get acclimated in summer workouts and practices and fall workouts. He’s going to be able to see how those guys carry themselves and see how they play. He’ll be able to bring himself along at a comfortable pace.” The Indiana coaching staff has a proven track record of developing shooters into solid rotation players. The most recent example is Nick Zeisloft, who arrived in Bloomington as an Illinois State graduate transfer. Zeisloft’s addition was met with plenty of skepticism from fans, but he is now in training camp with the Pacers and headed for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. If Gelon is going to follow a similar path, he’s going to need to maximize every opportunity to learn from his teammates and the coaching staff. “I think he can sit and watch and glean from the players that they have there right now and can pick up on not just how to play, but how to carry yourself,” Swan said. “He can learn on a day-to-day basis what the expectations are. I think that’s going to help him immensely.” Bottom Line: As the lone in-state recruit in IU’s 2016 recruiting class, Gelon has plenty to prove. He wasn’t impressive in the Indiana All-Star series over the summer and had some games at Crown Point as a senior where he didn’t stand out. However, the coaching staff remains high on his long term potential and he’ll have the opportunity to ease into a role early in his career. Quotable: “It’s not something he’s taking for granted. He knows there’s a huge responsibility that comes with it. That’s why he’s continued to work extremely hard since our season ended. He’s done everything he could to get himself ready for these summer workouts that he’s going through right now in Bloomington. It’s a badge of honor for him. He’s excited about it. He’s very honored to put on an Indiana uniform.” – Clint Swan on Gelon getting the opportunity to play for Indiana. -

Excerpt from the Memphis Commercial Appeal: http://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/nba/grizzlies/2016/10/16/grizzlies-morning-after-troy-williams-keeper/92151102/ Grizzlies Morning After: Is Troy Williams a keeper? Ronald Tillery , ronald.tillery@commercialappeal.com 12 p.m. CDT October 16, 2016 HOUSTON – Troy Williams, an undrafted 6-7 forward out of Indiana, could be making the strongest case to stay with the Grizzlies even though they already have 15 contracts. Williams started and played 42 minutes Saturday night when the Griz scored a 134-125 double overtime victory over the Houston Rockets in Toyota Center. As was the case during his four other preseason appearances, Williams didn’t disappoint. He scored a team-high 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting that included five of the Grizzlies’ 17 3-pointers. He also picked up four steals and a clutch rebound when the Griz began to pull away in the second overtime. Memphis led 125-123 and finished off the Rockets with a 9-2 run. Griz coach David Fizdale used a lineup that featured all of the team’s training camp invitees during the extra sessions. Forwards Vince Hunter (12 points, 10 rebounds) and D.J. Stephens (13 points) each had good showings. Williams, though, continues to stand out with his athleticism, ability to score off the dribble and in the open court, and convert 3-pointers. “All of them have done something that we like. But, obviously, from a productivity standpoint, Troy has really done some good things. D.J. has done some good things,” Fizdale said, acknowledging that the Griz roster might not be set. “That’s why (Griz general manager) Chris Wallace gets paid the big bucks. I’ll take a step back. We’ll talk about it. Who knows?” -

Game Recap: Women's Soccer | 10/16/2016 5:14:00 PM | Indiana Shuts Out Maryland, 1-0 COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana Women's Soccer completed a perfect conference weekend by shutting out Maryland on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The game comes on the heels of a 3-2 victory at Ohio State on Thursday night. "I think the two wins shows our growth and confidence as a team," said redshirt senior Marissa Borschke. "Coming from a game on Thursday that was more offensive-minded, today was more of a battle and more of a fight. It was a Sunday game and this is where you have to push through mentally. It takes all of us to come out with six points on the weekend." The win marks the first complete weekend for the Hoosiers (7-7-3, 4-3-2 Big Ten) since 2013. Going back to a 1-1 draw with Penn State on Oct. 6, it is also the first time Indiana has earned at least one point in four straight contests since 2009. Additionally, it puts Indiana into sole possession of eighth place in the Big Ten with two games to go. The top eight teams will advance to the conference tournament. Borschke's header in the 34th minute proved to be the difference maker in the win against Maryland (3-13-1, 1-8-0 Big Ten), while freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu tallied three saves in her fourth shutout of the season. The Hoosiers outshot the Terrapins, 10-6, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. "I think today was a classic example of a team that is willing to fight no matter what the game throws at us," said head coach Amy Berbary. "A win's a win and we put ourselves in a position to walk away with the points. Having a veteran in Marissa send in the game-winner and, on the other end, having a freshman in L'Hommedieu step up again and again in big moments was key to our success today." Indiana's first look of the day came off the foot of sophomore Maya Piper in the 16th minute, but the shot was saved by Rachel Egyed for a Hoosier corner, which was cleared by Maryland. Three minutes later, the Terrapins got a look of their own as Jlon Flippens sent in a ball to L'Hommedieu. The rebound popped out, but junior Kylie Kirk was there to clear the ball out of danger. Freshman Macy Miller put up a great look for the Hoosiers in the 33rd minute. It was saved but seemed to spark the Indiana offense as IU quickly earned a throw in, which was pushed out by the Terrapins for a Hoosier corner. Freshman Meghan Scott served the ball in to Borschke, who headed it from the right. The ball bounced a yard outside of the goal line, but back up off Egyed's hands and into the the net. The assist was the second in as many games for Scott and a team-leading fifth of the year. "It was just a matter of being able to break free get a head on the ball," said head coach Amy Berbary. "It was a class header by Marissa, who headed the ball down and past the keeper's hands." L'Hommedieu's biggest stop of the day came just out of halftime as Jarena Harmon sent in the ball from six yards out. As L'Hommedieu was diving to her right, the shot was blocked by her left foot to keep the game at 1-0. Up next, the Hoosiers head to West Lafayette on Saturday night to face Purdue in the annual Golden Boot Game. First kick is set for 7 p.m. -

Nathan Baird @nbairdjc 2m2 minutes ago Darrell Hazell out as #Purdue football coach. More details coming. [Baird is a sports reporter for the Lafayette Journal & Courier] Then this written by Baird and in the Indpls. Star online. Purdue fires football coach Darrell Hazell WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue has fired head football coach Darell Hazell, sources confirmed on Sunday. The move comes one day after the Boilermakers' 49-35 Homecoming loss to Iowa and three weeks after a 50-7 loss at Maryland in the Big Ten Conference opener. Hazell compiled an 9-33 record in three-plus seasons, including 3-24 in Big Ten Conference play. Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski could not immediately be reached for comment. Hazell was hired as the 35th coach in Purdue history on December 5, 2012, after a two-year stint as head coach at Kent State. He replaced Danny Hope, who was fired after a four-year run that included a 22-27 record and bowl trips in each of his last two seasons. Hazell received a $12.75 million, six-year contract. Two years remain on that contract after the end of this season. Purdue is responsible for the remaining value of the contract. Following Saturday's loss, Hazell was asked why he was confident he was the person who should lead the program. "I’m doing everything right to help these guys become better," Hazell said. "There’s no question we’re moving forward. Obviously, it doesn’t feel good right after this game. We’re doing a lot of good things. We just have to keep pushing." Purdue never won more than three games in any of Hazell's three full seasons. It also never won back-to-back games. Purdue fired offensive coordinator John Shoop and defensive coordiantor Greg Hudson following last season but retained Hazell. However, the same issues — a lack of consistency, poor run defense, shallow talent options at multiple positions — continued to plague the program. The Boilermakers opened this season with a 45-24 victory over Eastern Kentucky, followed by a 38-20 home loss to Cincinnati. After a bye week, Purdue rebounded with a 24-14 victory over Nevada to end September with a winning record for the first time under Hazell. However, things turned with the non-competitive rout at Maryland. The Boilermakers were out-rushed 400-10 and, entering the fourth quarter, had been outgained per play by a four-to-one margin. After an overtime victory at Illinois, Purdue returned home for its fifth straight Homecoming loss. The Boilermakers trailed 35-7 at halftime and 42-14 entering the fourth quarter. Bobinski must now address a football program that has lost considerable fan support and revenue since the end of Joe Tiller's successful stint from 1997-2008. Bobinski succeeded Morgan Burke, who hired Hazell, in September. Construction has begun on the $65 million Purdue Football Performance Complex, centralized home for the team's locker room, weight room, meeting rooms and athletic training needs. Purdue currently has 13 known commitments for the 2017 class. Rivals.com currently ranks that class 13th among the 14 Big Ten teams, while Scout.com and 24/7 both rank it last. I posted the following after last week's game against OSU: We're 5 games into the season; Lagow is not the answer at QB and I'm not sure we have an answer on the squad. Yes, he had 2 TD's, but that's not the sole measure of a successful QB and IMO his overall level of play just doesn't cut it in the B1G. And FWIW, I'm not all that hyped on our play calling. I reiterate - Lagow is not the answer and I'm not sure we have an answer on the squad. -

From Osterman at the Indpls. Star - North Central star Kris Wilkes pays yet another visit to Bloomington BLOOMINGTON — Indiana hosted an unexpected visitor Saturday: five-star 2017 North Central forward Kris Wilkes. Wilkes turned up on the sideline at Memorial Stadium, before the Hoosiers' homecoming football game against Nebraska. Probably IU coach Tom Crean's top target in the current senior class, Wilkes officially visited Bloomington just two weekends ago. He recently cut his list of schools down to a final three, which includes UCLA, Indiana and Illinois, and said he was aiming for a fall decision. “I hear from (Indiana fans) all the time," Wilkes told IndyStar's Kyle Neddenriep. "But I have to decide where the best place is for me. Even if you don’t have as many fans, if that’s where you want to go, then that’s where you should go.” Because he took his official visit earlier this month, Wilkes' trip to Bloomington on Saturday would have to be unofficial, meaning he would have paid his own way. It's unclear how far in advance his visit was planned. He canceled planned official visits to UConn and Xavier, and has visited all three of his named finalists officially now. “I’ll always have love for the Hoosiers," he told IndyStar. "I’ve been going down there since the fourth grade. When I went on that official visit, it showed me more. I got to see more of campus and see some of the new areas down there on campus. That was good. I’m used to just going down there for basketball and going home.” IndyStar understands Wilkes attended IU's practice Saturday, a portion of which was televised on the Big Ten Network, as part of his visit. Indiana currently has three players committed in 2017 – Georgia guard Al Durham, Philadelphia-area forward Clifton Moore and Chicago-area forward Justin Smith. Wilkes is the No. 18 player in his class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He is a leading candidate for IndyStar Mr. Basketball in 2017. -
No. 7 Indiana Draws at Ohio State, 2-2 COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team played the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. With the result, the Hoosiers move to 8-1-5 on the season overall and to 2-0-4 in Big Ten conference play. Ohio State goes to 4-9-1 overall and to 2-3-1 in league action. Billy McConnell scored the equalizer for the Hoosiers in the 83rd minute, while Jeremiah Gutjahr netted a goal in the 18th for IU. Tallying assists for Indiana were McConnell, Francesco Moore and Cory Thomas. Ohio State was able to take advantage of a bad break for the Hoosiers in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Trying to clear the ball, Webb's kick deflected off a OSU's Nate Kohl and headed towards goal. Webb and Kohl both dove for the ball at the goal line, but Kohl was able to get his foot to it, scoring for the Buckeyes. In the 18th minute, the Hoosiers answered as Gutjahr notched his first career goal to tie the match at 1-1. Working in the middle of the pitch, Moore played a great ball to McConnell on the right wing. The senior sent a great cross to the far post, finding a wide-open Gutjahr, who headed the ball back to the right from six yard out. Less than two minutes later, the Buckeyes responded, retaking the lead on a goal from Ben Fitzpatrick, who scored from the top of the box to the left post. With Ohio State packing it in defensively in the second half, the Hoosiers dominated possession, looking for an equalizer. Finally, in the 83rd minute, IU found it. On the attack, a OSU clearance came out to the foot of Thomas, who cracked a shot on goal from 30-yards out. His effort was deflected eight yards out by McConnell, who redirected the ball to the lower-right corner, tying the match at 2-2 and forcing overtime. In the overtime periods, IU got off the only two shots. Tanner Thompson saw his curling effort go wide in the first overtime, while Andrew Gutman's effort in the final period was saved at the near post. For the match, Indiana out-shot the Buckeyes, 14-5, getting seven shots on goal to just three for Ohio State. Corner kicks were 4-3 in favor of the Hoosiers. In a physical match, Indiana was called for 28 fouls to just 12 for OSU. IU was also issued four yellow cards, while Ohio State was shown just one. The No. 7 Hoosiers will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 21 when the team heads north to face Big Ten rival Wisconsin. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
-
Good news is we're still undefeated in the B1G. Quick stat summary: Header goal by Gutjahr at 18′ and a goal by McConnell at 82′. IU with 14 total shots; OSU with only 5 total shots, but they made 2 of them count. Very physical game as IU with 28 fouls and 4 yellow cards – McConnell, Thompson, Fives and Hyacenth. Buckeyes with 12 fouls and 1 yellow card. Got to think many of our fouls were frustration fouls. Given OSU's record, this is another one we let slip away from us.
