I was kind of hoping for Duke. We haven't beaten them in 20 years and I really want to see it again. We've beaten UNC at home twice in the last decade, so I don't feel like that moves the needle too much as far as us being viewed as a legit program. Starting off the Scheyer era by smacking Duke's all-world freshmen in the mouth would make a far bigger impact, IMO.

IU v. UNC would objectively be a much bigger matchup and I don’t think anyone can honestly disagree.
UVA has been nice the past decade or so. IU and UNC are two of the most storied programs in college basketball. 11 national championships between the 2 schools. It would bring lots of eyeballs to the television. IU v. UVA doesn’t have the same draw.

I honestly don't care about being the favorite. I do love the fact we're in the conversation after only one year with Woody.
That's pretty incredible to me. And with recruiting looking up like it has been, it's hard not be optimistic about the program right now.

There's no way Purdue cheerleaders could qualify for Modern Dog mag, maybe the rear end special of Potbelly Pig Monthly, but not Modern Dog.

I don't know. If we want to be different, Miami is very different and probably the 3rd best ACC team.

    1. UNC
    2. Duke
    3. Miami
    4. No one else
Those are who I'd want to play.

You are right that UNC/Virginia/Duke are all probably going to be Q1 games.
I do think playing marquee games against the most talented teams is best for the team/IU in the long term. I have concerns that IU's basketball brand and size of the fanbase are diminishing with an aging fanbase and lost generation from the mediocrity of the past 20 years. Ohio State and Kentucky probably have grown their fanbases with their team's recent success and IU's recent irrelevance.
IU's opportunity to compete and finish at the top of the conference/nationally is more likely than not going to be tied to the fundraising/NIL capabilities than it is from a tactical advantage they had under Knight/McCracken/Dean/Sampson.
Also, selfishly I already have an Airbnb booked with some of my IU/UNC alum friends coming down to Bloomington with the intent of seeing UNC or Duke.

You thought I attacked you? No. That didn't happen. You needed to read my posts before YOU quoted me. I stated my opinion literally multiple times.
I doubt one loss to IU in the ACC/B1G challenge is knocking Duke out of the elite category.

Recruiting wise.. yeah, I'd say a win over Duke/UNC would be better. Especially, if we had a big # of vistors there for that game... which I assume we'd at least have some in state dudes since it's  a midweek game.
Maybe Perry, Cupps, and Cupps new teammate.. Can't think of his name.

I kind of disagree with that. A more marketable game has the potential to appeal more to future recruits than a less marketable one, at least in the short term. A win over Virginia, though they're likely to be a very good team, will be unlikely to have the same cachet with recruits as a win over a possible title contender in UNC or an overhyped Duke. If there is any chance Booker comes to IU and he hasn't decided by that point, being in the crowd for a raucous win over Duke likely helps IU's case far more than a win over Virginia would as an example.

    Great post.
And to the bold. 100% agree, no doubt about it. If that is the only criteria, we are going to be playing those two teams A LOT, even more than we do now, in the challenge, which is fine. Almost my entire "preference" is based on wanting some more variety in the challenge. Give us UNC.. I'll be ready to run my mouth to one of best friends that grew up in Southern Indiana and is a UNC fan......

I have the opposite opinion of you on both matters.
Tony Bennett would go into the HOF if he retired today. Outside of the Natty he won he has:
2x National Coach of Year (3x Henry Iba Award) 7 ACC Titles (5 Regular Season and 2 Conference Tournament) Coach of USA Under 19 Gold Medal Team 72% career winning percentage and 69.8% conference winning percentage 10 NCAA Tournament Appearances, including two at Washington State, arguably the worst job in power 5 basketball IU being the most marketable and highest ranked preseason team in the Big Ten should give them the opportunity to host one of Duke/UNC, who are also the highest ranked/most marketable teams within the ACC.

IMO, beating a talented but young Duke team with an unproven coach may be easier than a more experienced UVA early in the season. Such a win would certainly look a lot better to recruits. I don't think it will be Duke though.

No, not too good but who actually wants to watch that s***? I think we can hope for a little better than what will amount to an extra game against a BIG team. It would be nice to play an entertaining game against a talented and stylistically different team.

Here as with Kaiser, I think, you see the possible upside of having the head ball coach make his presence a big deal.
You can succeed recruiting by really grinding, logging the miles on the jet, no question. But Kaiser pushing his date back, Woody showing up here after the visit this week and IU seemingly having a seat at the table…if your presence is special you get noticed.
(and I’m betting Walsh deserves some credit for helping us get back in this one)

Crean had four top ten offenses in five years starting in ‘11-‘12, and a borderline top 25 one the sixth year, after which he got fired. Miss me with the revisionist history.

2013 Big Ten season was as tough as ever. You had IU, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin all legit. I think IU played OSU, Michigan, and Michigan State on the road as well as home. They won all the road games and lost to only OSU at home. Ended up winning the Big Ten outright. Point is if this team is as good as we think, they're going to do just fine.
100% agree too..so glad to avoid Madison.

Malibu Grill with Kyle Flipkowski kid. Also Fife was told to not offer any Indiana kids before getting them on campus. Then offered Colvin the next day and told Booker to come to campus. Didn’t sit well with the Booker camp, also wasn’t answering their calls. But after last night I think IU gets one of his 5 official visits

If we had Clark, we'd be expecting great things from him ... as X's backup. We'd also be hoping he got healthy enough to battle Bates and Galloway for the starting SG slot.
Illinois needs him to be their 30 minute per game point guard.
