I won't sweat it one bit if we miss out on Queen. He's very good and I want him on IU, but we'll get guys.
We didn't even know who Mgbako was until like April of last year. The staff has shown they can get in on kids very quickly and land them.
Coaches will get fired at the end of the season and open up recruitments, portal transfer, and maybe we can flip Catchings after all.
Sucks to lose a kid you prioritize, but at least it's November and not April 2024.

Hmmm… Payton Sparks and Anthony Walker or many 75-150 ranked freshmen?
I know the answer to that one. We can take a few freshmen like that, but not many.
Now top 50 freshmen? Different story.

I think in some instances even with top 50 kids I would take the transfer. This year I would take Nembhard all day everyday over any freshman point guard

I just don't stress out about things that I have no control over. We will get players through the portal and probably get some soring signees

I won’t “freak out” until the roster is set. I’ve long stated the Transfer Portal is the gift of all gifts. I much prefer the transfer portal in general but some balance is necessary between the two. The TP will always benefit the deepest pockets. And by many accounts we have some deep pockets, so I will not freak out unless we miss in both recruting windows. And we won’t under this staff and this current NIL set up. All it means to me, is the pressure will be on for the staff and the portal is the last chance. The nerves will ratchet up a little bit come Spring. The staff has publically stated they wanted 3-4 recruits this cycle and then fill from the portal. IF we get 1, that’s a derivation from the staffs expectations and they will need to pivot and find success. We’ve got a big recruitng staff and budget. If Ware and Mgbako have the seasons they are capable of this year recruitng will get exponentially easier for us going forward, I think.

Plenty of high ranked kids enter the portal nowadays. Just a different time in recruiting now. Sweet spot for coaches nowadays especially the non Duke, Kentucky and Kansas is a freshman that transfers after the first year because they know they have a better chance of having the kid 3 years unless they go to the NBA. This cycle was simple. The staff was in on some very highly rated kids that were in the sweet spot 15-50 that they would have had a great chance at landing. Woody and staff decided to go all in on 3 top 15 kids that would have made a massive statement across college basketball. They got one, barely missed out on one and are battling for the other. Now days staffs and programs like IU know they can swing for the fences early and because NIL they will have a lot to offer for late signees and transfers. Ware, Morris and Starling are kids that were 5 stars that transferred after their 1st year last year and from 2 years ago Emoni Bates, Ingram, Collins and Sallies, Huntley-Hatfield, Reid, Cleveland are 5 star kids that are playing for their 2nd team already and with Reid’s case his 3rd team. If a school has the NIL package, resources and show the ability to get kids in the league then recruiting will be fine. IU will be fine

Just part of recruiting now. If your program has a strong NIL, playing time available and connections it’s not really going to matter where the player comes from as long as you end up with one. Fans can worry about the missing out of high school kids but I’m guessing the staff knows what they have to offer to transfers or other decomits. Players will be available

I like Walker a lot. Just makes good basketball plays and has the length and athleticism off the bench we have really needed in recent years.

Walker has been a very pleasant surprise so far. I expect there will be more than a few games this year where he sneaks in to kill the opposing team while they are focused on stopping Reneau, Ware, or MM. This team has a lot of length and athleticism to throw at opponents and having someone with Walker's experience and energy as one of those guys coming off of the bench only magnifies the impact.
This team has a long way to go and a lot of things to improve upon but there are a lot of pieces to like.

November and December may be a little tricky with this group,
but February and March could be really good.

Just finished watching the replay... a lot to like, but taking it with a grain of salt based on the competition. That said
Reneau looks like he's really dropped the baby fat. And the 3 point shot is looking good. He is going to stuff the stat sheet this year, I hope he can stay out of foul trouble. He is clearly making a conscious effort but... still room to grow there. I think he could really surprise a lot of people this year and get some B10 honors Gabe Cupps. Holy cow. Those lobbs. The bball IQ. 4 years of him? You have to like the possibilities with him as your PG! And this front court... so versatile. Definitely going to be kinks to iron out in the first half of the season but I trust the staff to figure out the right rotations etc. I'll say this... I haven't been very impressed with Mack at all based on what I've seen from him in the past. He's really gotta figure things out on defense ASAP because if he can stay on the court long enough to get into a good rhythm, I think he is going to be able to score an awful lot of points for us. Banks, to me, just looks like the spitting image of a young OG Anunoby out there. He obviously hasn't put it all together yet (OG didn't really while he was here tbh though he did improve a ton) and looked sort of rusty/out of sorts early. But once he got into the flow of the game toward the end he looked really good. He's got a nose for the ball, a really good offensive rebounder. I am slightly curious about if he will stay engaged as the year goes on and minutes get tougher to come by. I hope he keeps improving. Think he can definitely contribute this year. Right now though, I do prefer Walker/ Sparks/ Reneau/Ware. Think he could have a big role next year. Ware vs Edey is going to be a helluva matchup. I like Ware's game but it's going to be interesting to see how it goes in the B10. Little worried about him holding up injury wise. But I think he can really elevate this team's ceiling. He just has a special combination of size and skill. Gotta continue putting in the work. The 3 point and free throw shooting looked a lot better today. Gunn... I hope proves to be better than Bates, but jury is still out on that one IMO. Need a larger sample size. Right now our backcourt feels like "quality over quantity" lol. The front court is just deep and talented as hell. It won't always be pretty. But I think this is going to be a really fun season.

1. Just exhibitions, but I’m pretty confident all ten guys we expect to make up the rotation can actually do positive things in high major hoops dependably.
2. Frontcourt shooting is going to make it hard for opponents to defend the rim.
3. IU can switch and/or X-out a lot defensively and thus dribble penetration is unlikely to be very effective from opponents. They’ll probably give up plenty of 3 attempts as a result (though they do a nice job of keeping them out of the corner).
4. Probably can’t take TOO much from TO% in exhibitions except to say: 12 TOs in 141 possessions is terrific.
5. I was a little worried that too much of this season’s outcome rested on how ready Cupps and Gunn were gonna be. Feeling pretty confident about that now.
6. Wish we’d gotten to see two games of Banks so far, but he continue to be a sneaky good offensive player by getting to the line. Like Gunn, if the shot is there — and I buy it in both cases! — they’re plus two way guys.
7. Currently a little concerned about defensive rebounding.
8. Walker looks like a better fit with this squad than I thought. Crafty and athletic enough to fit nicely with better scorers, good touch around the rim to maybe keep some bench units afloat if he needs to, better passer than I thought. Wonder how often he’ll guard down the defensive spectrum, as he seems like he could mark some big wings.

Whatever the reason, I'm happy he's part of the team. if he wants to get into coaching, having another coach on the floor can only help.

Rest well, Coach Knight. I was too young to see your hey day, but I know I grew up a fan of the Hoosiers because of you. You were the reason my father held season tickets and brought me to games from the time I was 6 months old in ‘96. It was because of you we share a love of IU Basketball. A love so deep that from the time I was a little boy, I dreamed of putting on the Candy Stripes and running out the tunnel with that “Indiana” across my chest, which led me to coming to IU for my undergraduate.. There was something magnetic about that floor you stood on because each game my father took me to, I had to go and walk on it on the way to our seats. Any chance I got to walk on that floor you commanded, I took it. You connected the team with the fans, and we all can thank you for that dynamic. You did it your way, and for that, I hope we all can respect. Rest well, Bob Knight. Your legacy is cemented.
