Not that hard. What is hard is trying to land a pure specialist who doesn’t upgrade you in any other way against the backdrop of a roster of 4-5 guards who don’t do that specialty as well but everything else better resulting in a muddled path to playing time. His path at Nebraska is crystal clear.

    HEY GUYS:
For the good of one and all, let’s generally agree to keep this thread about IU portal possibilities and much less about assessment of former posters and twitterers identities. We have a thread already set up for that purpose.
Doing so will make this thread an easier read for all.
    Thanks

Gonna have to say if I look back at your post history, you weren’t calling X a good player.  And you are trying to compare first season Myles Rice after two years of cancer to sixth year Xavier Johnson.  Would you really go on record saying that you’ wouldn’t rather have second year Myles rice over ANY year if X?

Think you need to dig deeper than that on stats.  First off, if you are talking about the comparison of last year's team to next year's the fact is that Xavier Johnson wasn't our point guard.  It was a combination of Johnson and Cupps because of Johnson's injury.  I assume you are wanting to compare to how much we improved since last year, so that is the only thing that is important.
Cupps and Johnson combined for 1228 minutes, or 37.2 minutes average for Indiana's 33 games.  Rice averaged 33.2 minutes for Washington State.  To put them even, let's prorate Johnson and Cupps' stats -- give them 90% of their combined stats to even it up.
    This yields:
    In 33 games at 33.2 minutes, the Cupps/Johnson combo made 80 of 201 shots (40%), 25 of 69 threes (36%), 52 of 77 free throws (67%), had 111 rebounds (3.4 rpg), 72 assists (2.2 apg);  237 points (7.2 ppg).
Rice shot 44%, 28% from three, 81% from the line, 3.1 reb, 3.8 assists, and averaged 14.8 points.  So Cupps/Johnson isn't even close to what Rice did.  As I said, what Xavier Johnson did previous in his career isn't relevant if you are looking toward amount of improvement.
Now, for Ware and Ballo:  your comparison lacks a couple of items.  First Ballo put his numbers up in 25.9 minutes per game.  Ware put his up in 32.1 minutes per game.  If Ware had played Ballo's minutes, his scoring would have been actually LOWER than Ballo's -- 12.8 points/game.  Same with his rebounding -- in Ballo's minutes, he would have had 8.0 rebounds per game compared to Ballo's 10.1.

It appears we will do well enough in the portal that Galloway will come off the bench in the role that suits him best. That is a very good thing.

You sound upset that our NIL collective is helping to attract excellent players. Let me see if I understand:
Now that every big-time power 5 program can afford to pay a ton of money legally to players, you believe we should:
Have a crappy NIL organization that doesn't allow us to pay as much in NIL as other major programs Use NIL, but lose portal recruiting battles to teams that have just as much money as IU for portal NIL Have as robust an NIL program as any other team, and use it to attract and get commitments from fantastic players Feel free to pick any and all of these as your preferred option(s)

That's how most big time programs were getting their players long before everyone was allowed to play the game.
Did we play it a little back then? Probably. Did we play it up to the level of most SEC and ACC schools? Nope; nowhere near that. Did we play it up to the bankroll of our alumni base? Not even a little. Now that it is legal, allowed, and every team is playing it? We are pretty ******* good at it.

But I also wouldn’t blame us for signing Williams or Payne while Ballo takes his other visits.

Between Edey leaving, new schools joining, and all the transfer portal turnover (especially with the Pac 12 being raided more or less) I am hopeful we see the start of a new play style trend in the B10. Conference will certainly look very different next year.

Yeah, I said on Friday I was told that deal was done. I have Rice, Carlyle and Ballo as Hoosiers as of now

With Rice already in the fold it comes down to who the staff best fits guard wise and how picky they want to be.   I personally would want Carlyle to commit.  He is exactly the type of guard you see on teams that are in the mix for making deep runs.   The more guards you have that can score on all 3 levels the better your team will be.  That leaves you need a threat that can hit from deep.  You then take whichever player of Conwell or Hickman want to be a Hoosier.  The portal is still adding players to it everyday so if neither of those 2 commit you go back in the portal and find a shooter but I would focus on getting Carlyle.   Ballo all day everyday over Payne.  Ballo is ranked the number 1 portal option by many services for a reason.  Back in the day Payne advantage over him would be he has multiple years left however in todays landscape you can’t count on that happening basically every staff needs to treat every player as a 1 year player. Staffs have to recruit their whole team over every year.   Miles having 3 years left is nice but you can only look at it as 1 year at a time

I think the way things stand now/along with who we've contacted--- it seems like they expect MM to play a fair amount of 4.
I think you can add 2 of the 3. Leal and Cupps shouldn't be looked at as "in the rotation", IMO, anyways. They are great 9th-11th guys ish, IMO.

So much arguing as we start locking players up.  Personally I'm glad to be in conversations about WHICH talented player we are bringing in.  Two years ago we were googling Michael Durr.

The rules are you can pay players now. Iu who sucks but sells out assembly hall almost every game should be dropping top dollar to get top talent! Salvaging what's left of the diehard fans and getting new bandwagon fans should be immediately addressed. We have to compete at the highest level and the money will be returned in a big way. However if Woodson truly can't coach could be a huge waste lol. Have to try. Let's pay these guys and let's roll

Who cares how much money. It’s not our money and the donors said they wouldn’t be outbid by anybody to support Woody. So let them. There is no money ball needed when you have the most money to spend. Oakland never won a World Series with moneyball. Make it rain boosters, make it rain.

When he first entered the portal and National services and talent evaluators were doing their scouting reports most basically said this kid would  have his pick at where he would go and that he could play anywhere.  I’m no talent evaluator but I watch a ton of college basketball and every time I watched Washington St play I always ask myself how in the world did Washington St get a kid like this and wished a team I was invested in had a guard like him.   Now I get to see how that will go next year

You end up like Purdue with a team of guys who can only shoot well and nothing else though. UConn exposed the hell out of them. Rice is a fantastic pick up. You can still think we need more shooting. But getting a building block player, 1st team all conference and freshman of the year... I'll take that talent and bet on him to have good improvement next year
