What doesn't make sense is why not just hire Fife? Fife doesn't need to learn from Woodson or be a "coach in waiting" for Woodson. Woodson doesn't have any college experience.

Do not see any way there is a twofer.   It doesn't work very often in the business world,  I don't see it working at all in college athletics. To many coaches get fired and do not leave on their own accord.  If Beilein tanks, then Fife would tank as well.  If Beilein stays healthy and succeeds, then Fife gets pissed off when Beilein doesn't leave.  I don't see any winning scenarios here.

Why do people like to come to our thread to tell us it’s not our guy? Do you guys go to allthe other threads to say it’s going to be Brad?

There is a big difference between being productive, and being able to handle the rigors of a college BB season.  A coach gets what 4 - 6 weeks off per year?  Sure the season is only 7 months long, but it is a brutal 7 months.  Not to mention the stress and headaches of the off season.

My Dad was a practicing physician until he retired at age 82.  We had lots of talks over the years, and was the first to admit that his productivity started going down about age 60.  When he retired he could still handle seeing 30-40 patients a day, but he was a small town doctor.  It was the working all day, then getting the phone calls at 2:00 am that finally got to him.  Well that and having to do everything on a computer.  :)

I think we can all agree that we want more than productive.  Crean was productive,  Miller was productive.  That didn't help us much.  The only concern I have with Beilein is that we know we will be doing another coaching sooner rather than later, and I think we can all agree that a coaching carousel is not a good thing.

I agree with most of what you say except this. I just think hiring Beilein insures that we will be looking for a coach sooner rather than later.  If he were 60, he would be right at the top of my list.

Agree with this. I’m no expert on Indiana AAU ball but if they can determine who IU hires, something is off. Not saying they have no influence, but damn.

Hiring a 68 year old would avoid the coaching carousel?

Just so people are clear, the Celtics will be in the playoff hunt for the foreseeable future.
Remember the top 10 seeds essentially make the playoffs now.
So this delusional hope that the Celtics are all of sudden be a lost cause is kind of ridiculous.

Hiring a coach, AND his head coach-in-waiting is not an ideal scenario.  It could get all kinds of tricky and outright awkward.
What happens if Beilein goes to consecutive Final Fours after his 5th year, but wants to keep coaching and chase a title?  We all think he's only got maybe 5 years left, but what if he thinks he can do twice that?  Fife wouldn't want to wait very long to take over.
Alternatively, what if Beilein never hits his stride here, and doesn't do very well?  We'd probably be more likely to fire the head coach and his staff than hand the job over to someone currently sitting on the bench.
Plus, the whole aspect of hiring the guy who's going to take over for Beilein probably wouldn't sit well with him.  Who are the players going to listen to more, the head coach or the guy primed to take over the job?

If we don't get a big name, which I definitely prefer, I'd rather have Alford that the next mid-major flavor of the day or mediocre P5 coach.

    Agreed with the above.
It's called character. If it's ok to cheat in one aspect of your life-say as a coach or player to "get what you want" that to me makes it awful damn easy to do it in other aspects-  to a girlfriend, a wife, etc.  Though RMK had character flaws, the fact that he abhorred cheating and held kids to higher standards showed he was a teacher first. He cared about the kid's future. I was watching his Hall of Fame acceptance speech last night and he said the thing that made him proudest as a coach was the kind of people his former players-many in leadership roles- turned out to be. As a teacher, that's what you want.  Call me naive, old-fashioned, whatever.
Many fans IMO are most concerned with "bragging rights"- our school is better than your school, etc. I have been a fan since the early 80's and like many on here, I long for a return to glory. And perhaps, Crean operated in the gray area; but to my knowledge that has never come out. For me,  if IU has to "play the game" to be like Kentucky; then I will find something else to do with my winter afternoons/evenings.
    For the glory...

So what is the definition of a gray area.  You are either cheating or you are not/  You can't be slightly pregnant.

I am so embarrassed by some of this so called IU fan base who would ever think for one moment IU should blatantly cheat just to win more games.

I am so happy that IU would rather lose and do things the right way, than cheat and win.  If the only way IU can have a good basketball team is to hire a coach that is going to cheat and live and in the Grey area; I hope they disband basketball all together,  The University is much bigger than any sports program.  Do it right or don't do it at all.

I think at this point its safe to say we have no idea what Dolson has in mind. I read several boards and all the " insiders" have different info. Dolson is definitely being tight lipped on this one. Guess we may not find out any real info till he is ready for it to come out. I commend him on this. Now hopefully I can give him the same props with the decision he makes for our new coach. Ill give whoever he hires the chance.
