I would agree that a healthy Newton probably has the highest ceiling, particularly defensively, though Rice seems to be more instinctive and Carlyle has more of a scoring mentality. But they didn’t play travel ball together. Newton played UA, Carlyle played EYBL and I think, could be wrong, that Rice played 3SSB. 

Don’t remember for sure where I heard it, might of been a YouTube video that was trailing him that I saw,, but I believe he said himself that it was originally diagnosed as a meniscus tear, but there turned out to be more to it. Made it sound like the procedure he had 3-4 months ago was not that big a deal and was precautionary though he wasn’t specific.

It was misdiagnosed originally, he had a microfracture IIRC. He's had a few procedures on it. The procedure this year was reported as a knee scope but that wouldn't have kept him out all year.

Can’t imagine he would. He’s gonna get starter’s minutes somewhere.

I'm here and BTownqb has it exactly right. Shot-making, especially from of our guards, was non-existent last year, and yes that includes the ability to shoot from the perimeter. But how many guys were effective shooting off the bounce in PnR? How many could get to the rim when they wanted? On top of converting? How many times did they get to the line because of their dynamics? That was by far and away our biggest issue last season, not "We PLaYeD THrOuGH THe  POsT".

Lot of posters really underselling Jakai and I fully understand why.  But if this kid can come back to 90%+ of what he was IMO he won't be the 11-13th player on the bench.  Maybe on the first day of the season but not by March.   

I thought I saw somewhere(maybe here, HSN or social media) that when Newton played with Rice and Kanaan all together on the AAU circuit while Ya was coaching and that Newton had a higher ceiling than Rice and Kanaan.

I’m not sure how I’d rank guys with all the factors at play, but if you told me I had to pick a coach for a team without having any idea what the roster construction looked like, I’d take Underwood and wouldn’t even consider anyone else. That guy has won with such wildly different rosters and schemes that it’s almost tough to believe. 

The last sentence confused me. He's a stretch 4, not a big. And other than Malik, MM, and MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE TG in a pinch... who on our roster can play the 4? and maybe more importantly, guard a 4? 
I think the way things stand now, it's obvious MM is going to play some 4.

I tend to agree.  He pretty much always gets it done.  I don’t really want him at IU but I’ve long come to respect what he does and he generally knows what it takes to win.

Haven’t seen this posted yet. An actual highlight reel of Malone. Obviously it’s highlights, but there’s some instructive stuff. Best thing here for me, by far, are his hands. He doesn’t fight the ball in any way, even in traffic. That’s very nice. Also looks to have pretty decent feet in tight quarters That’ll play. Not explosive, but given his big frame and how soft he is right now Marshall could do him some serious good in about 90 days. Don’t love the stroke, but he takes it confidently so I assume it goes in. Hard to tell much past that, but at 1st blush he doesn’t look like he would be out of place on a high major roster, though speed of play might take some time. But in a limited viewing I’m not opposed to the idea.
