I don’t think pristine was the issue. The thing with Pearl is that either: 1) He’s exceptionally grubby because he’s been busted absolutely everywhere, or 2) He’s exceptionally bad at being grubby because he’s been busted absolutely everywhere. After the Tennessee deal it was 3 years before anyone would touch him.

Oo, that’s not so good. -
Dude, those schools are, what, 10 and 15 mins from AH? You need to just put a lid on your unrealistic expectations. Those cigars aren't gonna just smoke themselves.

I’m sure a congratulatory phone call or text from Walsh really moved the needle for him. -
Lloyd always makes me laugh. Can you imagine the reaction around these parts in ‘21 if Dolson had rolled out a 43 yo career Assistant from the WCC whose primary schtick was International talent acquisition?

Would that loss be considered an upset?

The most hopeful IU sight in a minute. Love the kid. -

So he broke a foot at an inopportune time? He’s an IU lock. -
Probably true, but if something does happen with Woody I would bet on May over the field. If there’s 1 thing ‘21 made clear it was that the decision makers placed massive value on history. You don’t get to Woodson any other way. Now in 2024 you have a young successful college guy with not just IU ties but Knight ties who has a chance to solve your problem for 20 years? Ain’t no way it’s not him unless he flat doesn’t want it. If May was who he is now in ‘21, it would have been him then.

Great programs never suffer it. This is and always will be a historic program with an elite ceiling. But, personally, I put the expiration date on this being a great program at 1994.
-
Correct. The Matt Painter leaving SIU to sit next to Keady for a year just doesn't happen without the weirdest of circumstances.

This guy loves to post out of bounds plays, which makes him a fun follow. This one is sweet. You don’t get much more lost in an action than #30

You’re not helping my mood.

The wiring is crazy important here. Every bit as important as X’s and O’s. I didn’t love the Archie hire, but it was certainly defensible on paper. But, man, there was a moment in his introductory presser where he looked up at the banners and dude looked spooked. And he just never looked comfortable in this environment for a single second. Guys think they get it. They don’t. You’ve gotta find a guy who understands that this isn’t a job. IUBB HC is your identity. If they’re not eager to embrace that, they’re not the Guy.

https://247sports.com/Article/hunter-sallis-wake-forest-duke-basketball-college-basketball-march-madness-steve-forbes-227750771/ This one stings a little. Had an offer under Archie. Didn’t really put it all together at Gonzaga. Entered the portal. No IU contact that I remember hearing about. Goes to Wake Forest is now probably the best guard in the ACC. Sigh

For my money he's one of a handful of the best coaches in the country. Probably my favorite. But he is no way wired for this job.

(2024) - Liam McNeeley TO NOT INDIANA

Nice to see Givony get on board with what a few obscure IU fans on an off the beaten path fan site have been suggesting for a while. -
From a distance, that's always struck me as a good mid-major gig. Good conference. Nice arena. Located to recruit both the DMV and North Carolina. Good academically but able to get kids in. Nice place to live. No idea if their NIL is any good, though it probably could be. Easy to see why someone would stay.

Shrewsberry is probably as anti-Woodson as it’s possible to get. Pretty tough to picture him splitting on Notre Dame after a year, particularly after splitting on Penn St after 2. But they could do worse. In fact, they probably will.
-
Doubt he’d be a candidate there, but if I’m Kenya I’m raising my hand on that job.
-
I absolutely would. Whatever “it” is, dude appears to have it. But I don’t imagine you’re selling that 1 to the money. But hey, hiring a young guy from Army coming off a losing season would presumably be a complete non-starter in today’s world. So maybe someone will show some vision and take a risk.

Abdur-Rahim has to be on the shortest of short lists for NCOY. 2nd program the guy’s done this with.
-
I imagine he’d jumpstart the program in a big way, that’s what he does, but I’m not sure I’m ready to give a Bill Self contract to a guy who’s not Bill Self and have to commit to his kid at the same time. But maybe the kid wreaks of leadership and you have a ready-made succession plan. We’re not figuring that one out around here.

There are a lot of complicated moving parts with Pearl and I just don’t see it. The fact that he’s been busted at every single D1 job he’s had, as both HC and Asst, may not be disqualifying but it should be part of the calculation to a program that was literally incinerated by a guy like that. Dude got busted at Milwaukee for God’s sake, are you kidding me? He’s on a long deal for top of the market jack right now. Are you ready to pay a huge buyout and then reset the market, because that’s probably what it’s gonna take? Plus, any deal will certainly include Steven Pearl as a designated successor. Given Bruce’s age you better believe Steven’s a Guy as well and if you don’t you have no deal. But the guy energizes programs and he wins, so it’s defensible if you’re willing to swallow all that.
