Wonder how that looks to Haralson too, even if he’s not in the group chat (yet)

Yes — all things being equal I like multi year portal players if you go that route.
Expanding on my assertion that Malik can cover you SOME defensively at the 5, think there’s a few considerations:
    1. With Malik himself, you give away some rim protection but potentially take away some of the fouls he accrues far from the hoop.
    2. As others outlined, you can diminish (but not eliminate) the need for some rim protection with better defense everywhere else.
    3. No Edey next year, Dainja’s a part-time player, none of the other 5s in the B1G next year as of now project to be Edey/TJD/Dickinson-level performers IMHO

It's honestly unlike anything you'd ever imagine for a Big East school. That is why they mostly play at the Prudential Center... Walsh Gymnasium is way less nice/impressive than a lot of high school gyms. Probably every HS gym in Indiana lol. It's extremely dated, but space is hard to come by in their city and it's a relatively small school, so very unlikely they'll get investment to make serious upgrades. That said, it's a really fun place to watch a game. You're basically right on top of the action, similar to Cameron Indoor in that sense (but way smaller). Plus, tickets were cheap - $20/pop usually, not sure about for the NIT games.
NIL is very challenged there too. Tough job to be successful in, especially in this era. I think Shaheen will get them back to the tournament but could see him moving on to bigger and better things after a certain point.

But which is the real Trey? 3 years he didn’t shoot it that well and 1 he did. He’s probably somewhere in between. I’m guessing he’ll shoot it better next season but he will be coming off knee surgery.
But we also can’t deny that we struggle early in the season on offense. Adding a new PG to run things will take some time.

In some ways yes, in many ways not. But Trey is pretty freaking good. He could be the 5th-7th best player on a team that made a deep tournament run if he could be used in the right role. “Featured scorer” was most certainly NOT the right role.

I wouldn’t think so unless he shoots the ball a lot better than expected. I love the idea of Tucker joining the team but wouldn’t be thrilled if he’s promised ~30mpg.

Yeah, all good points. My big concern with Malik at the 5 is that he does not rebound well enough right now. Mgbako I think can be a good rebounder at the 4, but he is also not a high level/consistent rebounder as of now, and he will likely still play at the 3 IMO for at least a good amount of time if he does in fact stay. That said, I think Malik showed a lot of improvement this year and if he makes a similar jump next year, I could see him playing some time at the 5 and it working well... plus, Mack will be a great sophomore if we're able to keep him. My "sunshine pumping" hot take is that I'm hopeful Gallo shoots better next year (I'd take 33% on low-ish volume... just enough to keep defenses honest.). In 2022-2023, he shot 46%, I'm sure the volume was low and his 3PT/FG%s have been low otherwise. But in his last year of eligibility and with a hopefully more focused role, I'm hoping he can be more efficient.

Don’t have the numbers but someone posted Cupps’ catch and shoot #s near the end of the season and they were substantially better, as you’d expect. It’s a bit unorthodox but he’s an easier guy to slot in and get ANYTHING from offensively if everyone else on the floor can provide ball-handling and rim pressure.
He can space, and his defender then has to leave him open — ++ play for IU, maybe 1.3 points/possession if he’s a little over 40% from 3 on open catches, OR his man doesn’t leave him, and then it’s easier for whoever’s getting to the tin.
That, and a normal progression for a guy who played a bunch of minutes, is probably a top half of the league backup PG.

These shorter spring recruitments are much more like NBA free agency — meet the staff, see the facilities, here’s NIL range, can you be here in June, we’re also after Players B and C, think these players are returning….
So that and charism, plus what IU more broadly can offer?? Makes sense it’s Woody’s wheelhouse. Need to get better at the more typical, longer HS ones.
2 McD AA wings would’ve been nice this offseason. One is a nice consolation after the other dropped away.
Malik at the 5 can work defensively some of the time — really need a backup, truer 5 who can protect the rim and can stretch out to 20-25 minutes some nights. That’s an easier portal patch than someone with Malik’s skills.

Hoping we can attract a younger 5 who can be here 2 years or more but would be seen as a backup in year 1 and a starter the following year.

Question:  Belmont has three pretty high in demand players in the portal  -- Gillespie, Tyson, and Dia.  The three sophomores combined for over 50 points/game last year at Belmont, which finished fourth in the MVC last year.
Is this indicative of Belmont underperforming in the MVC or is it indicative of how underrated the MVC was last year?
