The Future

the sophomore class is the one I think that is killing him. They should be getting major minutes and keeping the movement going. One guy out of five and having the others still bit finding ways to contribute consistently is a big hit.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    IU knocking on the door

This is a fair point. I think they are standing at two doors however. One as you describe. If they out in some great off season work, gel and find legitimate leaders then could move from the cellar to a contender. The other door is one that leads to implosion, selfishness and more if the same. The first door I will contend is harder for guys who struggle with selfishness but I have no idea if this is true for our guys. I think how we finish this year will show which door they will likely take.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Crean is getting paid way too much money to ever field a last place BT team.

Last year was great but are we to assume he will only have that kind of success when he has two McD kids, two 1000 point seniors and another guy who happens to be the 2nd pick in the lottery

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    TOM CREAN FIRED

Brad Stevens is an Indiana guy. He lived here, worked here and went to college here. Indiana guy, check. Billy Donovan is an Indiana guy too, somehow I am sure we can make a case for that.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Gregg Marshall

Anyone watch Wichita State basketball enough to break down how Gregg Marshall coaches?

Looked over the roster and noticed that while they do have a few seniors getting minutes amongst their top 8 they also have a lot of younger guys getting a bulk of their minutes.

They won the NIT 4 years ago. Were a 5 seed 3 years ago but lost to VCU. Went to the final four last year. And are top 5 ranked this year.

His first year in the MVC they were 9th and jumped up to 5th then 2nd twice before winning last year. Great conference, no but decent enough.

Have not really watched them play much. Anyone have good insight on how he coaches? What kind of kids he recruits?

Not that we need a new coach, I was just curious. I remember liking him and The Wright State coach back when we brought in Crean.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I agree so without Noah, the likelihood we jump up to a mid contender level next year is low. With no known promise beyond 2014 Crean really needs Noah to stay and he needs to hope the alumni can be cooled for one year.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

this is a good reference and I wonder if it would be enough. Let's say that happens and we jump like that again. Following a similar assumption we top out 4th or so in the BT and get to the sweet sixteen like that team. Though we could compete with anyone we are ranked around #15. A big jump from this year. For this to happen I think Noah has to stay. So after the sweet sixteen year Noah goes pro. Was that our peak? Do we fall back to marginal? Do we fall like this year?

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Can you think of any team that has gone from the cellar to a contender in one year? Maybe a team like the fab 5 who brought in a 5 or 4 star kid at every position. We are not doing that. I agree we will likely see our current freshman improve too but I just find a jump of that magnitude unrealistic.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

All the McDs under Crean have lived up to their hype so I will give you Blackman. But currently we are 1 game out of last place. Do you think that adding the 3 freshman next year will propel us from the cellar to a contender?

If Noah does not come back are you still optimistic? If so is that based on an assumption we bring in a really good big to replace him?

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

So we fire him next year and we do not have the transfer issue?

Also if we fire him we will be right back where we were, you mean like last place in the BT? Pull up the standings. We are already there.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Indiana's Remaining Schedule

I think we lose 7 more. One of at NW or at PU. I also am not sure about UM but since it is here we probably should win. 7 more losses would not be good unless we play them all well to make it a good competitive game like last night. The sophs and juniors, other than yogi, are not playing up to what I would expect of a blue chip program. We lost a lot but the kids that should have replaced them, highly ranked kids too, have underperformed. I do not expect us to be an NIT team except in unusual situations and then only once a decade. We were able to recruit very highly ranked kids for the 12 class and as much as we like to praise CTC for finding Oladipo, we missed on the kids the soph junior group. The 12 class showed we could pull in top recruits to play alongside Cody and the ones we chose are perhaps good role players but we needed to have done better. The 2012 class was a top five nationally ranked class that with our ability to develop players should be giving us a lot more. Combine this with another top 5 class this year and the cupboard is bare argument does not fit. Not expecting a FF contender this year but we should be in the tourney with a fighters chance to win 1 or 2 games. Hoping we do better than losing 7 of these games. I heard a DC rumor....
Provide a link then or something. I've seen nothing anywhere about it. I've seen his name mentioned for our job and other jobs but I've not seen anything that says he will be our new DC. I don't know how I'd feel about the hire if it's true. He didn't do much with far better talent at Texas. TOM CREAN FIRED

I do not think we need an Indiana man unless one is available. Fife not ready and Alford is less proven than Crean. RMK was not an Indiana man. If Crean cannot get the ship righted we will be making a change. He certainly should not be fired now but the red flags are starting to go up for me - a long time supporter. TOM CREAN FIRED
Because I know he's coming back. Fact.
I guess I find it hard to believe it can be a fact at this point. Sounds like you know Noah or someone close to him. A question for you then, if Noah is projected as the 8th pick now and you know he is back as an absolute fact, is there a point or position in the draft where that changes? If he somehow moved up to 4 is he still a lock to come back? Conversely since you have an inside connection, if we do. It being in any other bigs for next year could this cause Noah to reconsider staying? CTC promised Cody he would bring in a center but none of the centers could play GMM and Jurkin. I wonder if Noah sees himself as a 5 in the NBA or as a 4. If it is as a 4 I would think he would want some court time as a 4. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Will all you sally's still be pouting when Noah comes back and we'll be a top 10-15 team again next year?
Sure. Where will you be if Noah does not come back? Seems that the only way we are a top 10-15 team is if he is back. He is projected to be a lottery pick now so I would venture to say there is a very good chance he will not be back. You can point to Cody coming back as an example sure but the team Cody came back to was one that was on the upswing. If Noah does not come back will you become a "Sally" too? Pomeroy Projections: Yikes
I'm sorry, but if that happens Crean will have some serious explaining to do. And not just his post game "we're young, they're not listening" crap. Unfortunately, I don't have much faith we'll improve much as the year goes on. We should at least be seeing signs, but we're not and Crean has shown he won't make any changes.
I am with you here. 5 win seasons should be gone for now. I gave CTC an A for the rebuild but with 2 top ten classes in a row even a rebuild year should be much better than 5 wins. The 2012 class is really hurting us now and that happens in coaching but 5 win seasons will be hard to defend. Combine that with the strong likelihood that Noah leaves and things could get warm quickly. CTC avoids that by having 8-9 wins this year and helping the team compete better in our losses. Turnovers
It's part of it, but I won't place all of it on youth. As I've said, turnover problems are consistent with Crean teams. Go back to his first year at Marquette and the best his teams have done is average 13 a game, with several years averaging more than that. It's a part of his offense, he wants them to just push push push and doesn't seem to care much about the consequences.
This year things are terrible. No sugar coating that. You were spot on about the TO rate of Marquette while CTC was there but for fun I took the same time period for Duke. MU turnover average was 13.7 Duke was 13.95. I did not pull up any other teams. MUs highest rate was 14.8 Dukes highest was 15.4. I am not sure it is fair to claim that CTCs teams have consistent TO problems unless you think Duke does too. This year has been terrible and yet seems to be an aberration compared to the MU years. If it is not corrected it will be our Achilles heel all year. I also agree with others that this is not just a freshman issue. Yogi had a great game but those two TOs at the end of regulation were killers. Noticed CTC responded to two tweets today which is not common for him. Probably getting some tweet heat from fans or just tired of things right now. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Is Coach Mallory Gone Soon?

I think I have good news. Circle Dec 19th 2013 on your calendar. I looked back at the LSU boards in 2008 and they looked a lot like ours now. Interestingly he was not fired officially in '08 because he moved on to the Lobos. I found an article though where Mallory admitted he did not really have a spot as DC with LSU if he did not move on. Fast forward to 2010 and the Lobos and again with a defense that is getting worse Mallory moves on this time to IU without being fired I believe. The announcements occurred on almost the same date (Dec 17th and Dec 18th) just 2 years apart. So this got me thinking...I noticed a lot of our '14 recruits have been turning in paperwork recently to enrol early and I wonder if the previous Mallory exits weren't strategically timed. Combine the early enrollment a with keeping kids committed and I am thinking/hoping we have not heard an announcemt because we (IU and Mallory) are both taking a look without giving fuel to others to poach our kids until a DC is named. Mallory is probably a like able guy and works favorably on his exit so I could see why he might travel on recruiting visits. Then on Dec 19th 2013 when we announce that Mallory has accepted some coaching job somewhere that is spun into a believable story and also announce the hiring of a new DC we do not lose ground with recruits. We should hear something in a week and a half Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
