Happy Father's Day

On vacation with the family. Did the boys want to go to the pool or beach this first day, no they wanted to find a basketball court here and play basketball. Not sure how many years I have left to play at their level but that was surely a great way to start Father's Day. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    A.J. Guyton
This thread has officially gone off the rails with these past few posts. Let's keep in mind the conclusion you guys made tonight is that Crean is a lame duck coach because of some Facebook posts made by AJ Guyton after he found out he will be inducted into IU Hall of Fame while Crean is coach. It truly is amazing the way some people construe things to push forward their opinion. People do realize Calbert took a different and better job at SLU than was available at IU right? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Calbert was offered the asst job here at IU though right? Thought I recall Crean saying Cal decided against it because he did not think he was ready or something. Then the next year he takes a job the same job he turned down here. Yeah he knows Crews but he knows IU and this area better and moving a family to a new area is not as easy as staying. I have no idea if there are issues but it is not hard to make assumptions about why Cal chose not to be an asst here but shortly after he chose to be an asst elsewhere.
Noah said the same things last year. If we want to land 5* kids we need to get used to it. At least he is being honest. I loved the kids that stayed 4 years but he said it well, his goal is to play in the NBA and it is hard to fault him for that. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Kj's replacement
Excellent hire. A guy with head coaching experience and experience under other coaches. He may have coached with Calipari, but I see that as a positive. Cal is a really good coach
I would have laughed at you last year regarding Cal but I now agree. Sure he has a lot of top talent but I was at a few games this year and watched him on the bench lay into these guys. He had a game in the tourney where the strategy was basically drive throw up a close shot that the bigs can rebound and score on the rebound. Then when the twins would jack an early outside shit he would yank them and get into their grill. If another team started to rattle his team he was quick to use his TOs. He used a couple nearly back to back in a couple games. Then just his instruction during the games was more than I expected. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Kj's replacement
To be fair: 1. Disaster only began with the Syracuse loss at the end of the 2012 season 2. Cooper is not the only person to leave and or decide not to come since then. He is only the latest.
I do not think Seth leaving is an issue unless more comes of it. As to your point about disaster only beginning with Syracuse I see it differently. After a great win at MSU on Feb 19th we went 5-4 down the stretch. Poor performances in the BT tourney and against Temple and Syracuse. Problems began sometime after Feb 19 and continued through the last game on March 28th. This is a period that extended over a month and during the worst time of the year. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    Kj's replacement
There are in quiet period until 7/5/14, then they are dead between 7/6-7/31/14 except for these dates: (1) July 9 (5 p.m.) - 13 (5 p.m.) (2) July 16 (5 p.m.) - 20 (5 p.m.) (3) July 23 (5 p.m.) - 27 (5 p.m.) Those are evaluation periods, so coaches are not allowed to talk to kids at events but they are allowed to watch. Can talk to kids only if they are on campus.
If a guy is not on a staff anywhere and currently is associated with HS kids then during these times that person would have a leg up. Probably cannot fully proclaim and wear IU gear but in quiet times they could say they are interviewing and negotiating a deal. I know it has been done before. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    NBA Draft: Noah Vonleh

I will follow. If he (perhaps eventually) speaks well of IU all the better. If he plays a a high level I hope he can reconcile his thoughts towards IU because it would be nice having a guy like that promote IU. Gordon does so and he was here but a year. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Who would you hire to replace CTC?
Who do we hire? Don't confuse my realism with comfort.
Well see if I say Brad Stevens you scoff and say he is not coming or he is not perfect or blah blah blah. Same for Marshall. The thing is I do not study basketball and do not know who the up and coming coaches are. You talk to experts and get their feel. You interview and look for your guy. Sometimes you get him and sometimes you get an alternate coach. I get it, it is not easy. I am not an AD though and am not in the business to be looking for the next coach. It was pretty clear when Davis was not the guy. It was even more clear when Sampson was not the guy. For many it is trending that way with Crean. It is not clear yet and thus another year. However if we finish only marginally better next year and 2015 does not look much better I am convinced you will still be saying the same thing. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Who would you hire to replace CTC?
So, no answer to a surefire coach worthy of a couple of buy-outs that will without a doubt lift the program to the next level? I'm really glad we have level headed people in the positions that make the decisions.
Sigh. This is where you find comfort. Because there are no sure fire coaches who would absolutely leave and come here and be an improvement then we should ignore: We were terrible down the stretch last year (5-4) over 39 days after winning at MSU. We have had two top ten classes (2012 & 2013) and a top 25 class in 2011 yet we had no one prepared to take over this year. We have had 3 players arrested and allegedly another 3 fail drug tests. While we look to be better next year it does not look like we are building a championship level team for the future. We have no commits for 2015 yet. We lost Calbert who could have been an assistant here but chose to be an assistant elsewhere. Some pretty good sources have said he would not return if Crean were here. We just lost our primary recruiter after our AD say we would not be outspent. Crean himself just said this team, which includes guys who left but also was directed at guys like yogi, struggle to make good decisions. None of these alone are terrible but it is becoming a cumulative thing. Crean will get another year and if he can right the ship great the seat cools. If he cannot, then it is time to let him go. It was great to win the Big Ten last year and it was an accomplishment for sure. This year was equally bad though. We have not finished this poorly in the Big Ten in a long time (I am not counting the other times Creans team finished lower since he was rebuilding.). Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Who would you hire to replace CTC?
I know that's not how it works, but come on. We all saw Cody in that game. He was the preseason player of the year and an all-American and he played awful. I personally put some blame on him.
Michigan played the same zone a few days later and Mitch played the middle like Cody should have. Like any coaching manual says against a zone. When Cody repeatedly caught and drove and never looked for the shot that is initially on the player but as a coach you have to pull him out and make a change. That is on Crean. It was also apparent our single strategy relied on Yogi dribbling in and beating them somehow. Cody did not seem to have a clue what to do and that is on Crean too. Is there still a dead period in the summer? A lot of schools did not name replacements until after the dead period if they were not affiliated with another school. This have an advantage because they were not on staff and were not limited by contacts. They cannot push IU but can continue to build relationships Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

    A program of excuses
Let's see... JBJ is a program changing talent. Robert Johnson looks like he's ready to contribute right away too. Troy Williams is going to have a breakout year, and Yogi is Yogi. One of, if not the best PG in the country.I don't think the post is going to have to do much but rebound and block some shots. With the firepower on the wings, i have a feeling thats where most of the scoring will come from. I feel like a broken record....If you aren't excited, at least more so than last season, something is wrong. This is a tournament team. If I'm wrong, then maybe you Hoosier Doomsday Prepers are right, but I think the program will be back on track in 2014-15.
I think you ask a good question. Am I more excited about this season than I was before last season. In order to answer I have to jump back a year before we played a game and I am pretty sure there was more enthusiasm then than I have now. Why? We were coming off a season where at times we were the best team in the country and we had the highly ranked 2012 class plus the additions of another McD big and the 13 class to take over. I felt we may have some bumps but by the end of the year we should be a top 20-30 team. Going into next year I am not as optimistic as I was last year before we played a game. I do think we will be better than the year we finished so perhaps that is the confidence you mention. Just being better than last year though is not enough to warrant enthusiasm. I do think we can get to the top 20-30 level with this team so perhaps at best I have the same enthusiasm as last year Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
