Seems like we need a thread to monitor and comment on the summer progress of the current IU basketball roster. So there’s this!
-
I don’t think it can be underestimated how massively important this addition to the Indiana Hoosiers is. A point guard that can score at all three levels. A true leader on and off the court. First team All PAC 12 and PAC 12 freshman of the year. Three years of college eligibility remaining. A truly mature personality, who has overcome extraordinary challenges, of which basketball challenges will pale in comparison. A player whose skill and leadership will attract other outstanding players of character to Indiana. Congratulations to the staff, especially Coach Ya, who got this player to believe in the plan and his role at Indiana University. This one is a really big deal.

The BtownBanners Coffee Geekery thread says differently. I just inhaled a double shot at Soma off Kirkwood. Gotta caffeinate for the football game tonight! :) -

I love that video! Of course, Ima kinda cheesy myself. -

HEY GUYS: For the good of one and all, let’s generally agree to keep this thread about IU portal possibilities and much less about assessment of former posters and twitterers identities. We have a thread already set up for that purpose. Doing so will make this thread an easier read for all. Thanks -
Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters

Holy crap. Did Brad Stevens really say “We’d like to get over that hump.” That’s pretty funny. -

Ummmmm…. Which coach are they willing to do that for? Most P5 teams have zillionaire donors. That budget still needs to attract talent. Ballo apparently gave IU a discount over other programs so that he could play for Mike Woodson. -
President Whitten - 2024 Faculty No Vote

Oh completely agree! It seems as though the aggrieved were motivated, but the proponents of Pres Whitten among faculty were really hard to find. -

Stuhoo replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Off Topic Forum
But there are certainly more than 948 faculty who would have been eligible to vote. Only one side of the vote was motivated to take the time to do so apparently. -

About the same actually. But that was before Woodson signed Rice and Ballo -

Well stated. No matter whom are right or wrong or how one feels about various issues, this is some high drama beyond those issues. Major personality clashes. -

Malone. Essegian. Filled and done. -
If Underwood can get AJ Storr and Tre White to play team basketball he is one hell of a coach.

Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters

That's a great question. I'll try some guesstimate math based on $6 million total NIL to parse out to 13 players: Ballo - $1.1 million (Goodman reporting that the price for IU was less than others were offering). Reneau, Mgbkao; $650k each Rice, Carlyle; $600k each Galloway, Tucker; $400k each Cupps, Leal, $250k each Newton; $200k That's a total of $5,100,000 with three spots open. That means we are under the $6,000,000 NIL even if we pay real money to two and leave the 13th spot open. Malone seems reasonably likely and he would be a low cost NIL signee. We good. -

Optimistic but not convinced? Exactly. It does seem clear to me that Rice and (hopefully) Carlyle will significantly raise our floor for next season; in large part because last year, we won 19 games and were 10-10 in the B1G with a really sad sack guard rotation. It cannot be worse than a freshman Cupps, an injured and offense-lousy X, a turrible Gunn, a limited but game Leal, and Gallo counted on to be our everything. That. Was. Rough. -

Just saying...that's 5/12 for 41.7%. ;) -
Ballo is a completely different player than DJ Burns. Completely different. Ballo is bigger, stronger, in better shape, and a world's better defender. Burns is super skilled and a low post clever scorer and passer option in a way that Ballo never will be.

Fire Coach Woodson + Assessment of Former Posters

I think that @Chris007 presented the alternate approach; push hard for Humrichous and Conwell first and foremost. But we desperately needed shot makers too, and both Rice and Carlyle project as P5 shot makers far more than Conwell or Humrichous. That, and it seems as though Rice and Carlyle expressed immediate high interest in being "the bird in the IU hand." -

There are no flawless players. There are players that are great fits and good for the style of play for your team. So, we appear to be rolling the dice that the flaws of three excellent college players, Rice, Ballo, and (likely) Carlyle will be overcome by their positive attributes: For Carlyle and Ballo especially, the upside is defense, motor, and quickness for their size. For Rice, it's leadership and quickness. For Rice and Carlyle, it's shot making. Damn, we needed some shot makers - guys who don't need to be wide open or be the beneficiary of a good offensive action to create offense. Last year only Reneau really brought that. For all three, they have proven P5 success. For Rice and Ballo, an upside is 2 PT fg percentage. Downside? For all three, it's 3 point percentage (somewhat less so for Carlyle). Only Ballo is a crappy FT shooter. We are rolling with them while taking on the risk that Rice and Carlyle's three point percentage may or may not improve. Seems to me like a reasonable risk to take on. -

True, but a starting role would be at a mid-major, with substantially less NIL. -
Oh! I was mislead because you literally said that “bigs that can’t shoot threes” was your problem. So I guess what you really meant was that “there is nothing this staff can do no matter what to make you think we can win enough to make you happy!” So let me amend my response: Wrong thread: redundant mopey sadness about Woody is best expressed in the Fire Mike Woodson thread.
-
And our team two years ago that was a 4 seed featured a dominant big that could not shoot threes. And our disappointing team last season featured a dominant big that could shoot threes. Hmmmm…. Maybe dominant bigs don’t need to shoot threes!
