    General Coach Candidate News

Dizz, this is not aimed at you specifically but in general at the discussion regarding Moser. He was a slow starter in his career but he's figured out how to win...he grasps his own strengths and weaknesses and continues to make adjustments over time. Anyone citing his earlier years or his full career record is missing the point with this guy. He's a very good coach today and has been for four years now. Four years is not a fluke. If he'd had the same level of talent for those two years in between his final four and today, he'd have made runs then too. His pace is slow but the offense is much smoother than Miller's, even Bennet's. My wife, who half-heartedly watches hoops on occasion, has used the word "beautiful" at times to describe some of his plays and she's not wrong. Is Moser the right fit for IU? I dunno...his style does not fit what Dolson described. But some of the critics I've seen on this board are flat out wrong. He's going to get a power five job and I believe he'll be very successful.
  2. Indeed. I love the enthusiasm but flight tracking is about as useful as penny stock advice from a stoned surfer in Bali.
  3. Agreed. The odds of her being a home run would be much higher than most of the names being floated.

And even Moser has to look at our fanbase and recognize it's a risky move. Not slamming us...just pointing out the reality of the situation.

    Candidate Thread: Porter Moser

It's definitely not an apples to apples comparison. Matta got his first break in a Butler program that was rolling (Collier having built them up) and leveraged it to Xavier and OSU. He was most successful midway through the 17 year stretch you cite, with significant 5-star talent. From there it was several years of gradual decline. Moser, in my opinion, has grown significantly as a coach throughout his career, to the point that for the second time in four years and with mostly 3 star talent he is making a run. Matta was a very good coach in his prime But Moser is doing something right, right now. That said, it's always a gamble when mid-major guys move up to power programs.

    Ooooook who’s your # 2?

With all do respect I think that's a bit of revisionist history. When IU hired Sampson there were many inside/outside the fanbase who were surprised and disappointed. He was already viewed as dirty, by many coaches, analysts and fans. Then he committed those violations at IU. The story was not that they were secondary violations. The story was that he did it intentionally and repeatedly. He knew he was getting caught and kept doing it. It's true that he knows how to coach. It's true that IU messed up by being to honest with the NCAA (obviously we've seen so may other programs get away with much worse by denying the charges). But IU was not wrong to part ways with him.

  8. OMF - Trubisky To The Bills; Celtics Play Down To Inferior Cavs; Brad Stevens To Indiana University? 3-18-21 (radio.com) Starts about the 25 minute mark. From around the 32:09 these guys basically say, "yes" he should go to IU. It's not insider stuff but it makes me smile.
  9. The top 4-5 prospects are all obviously upgrades but Beard is the least exciting to me for that reason. I'm positive his teams would compete well in the B1G, but I'm not sold that they would stand out from the pack was well as they have (a couple years anyway) in the Big 12.

I watch a lot of Loyola hoops. Moser definitely demonstrates a key trait that our last two coaches have lacked. The ability to consistently make adjustments during games and with regards to his system. I'm very high on him long term but I'd ideally like to see how Loyola adjusts without Cameron Krutwig. That kid has been such a rock for the program and pain for their opponents the last four years. That said, Krutwig might come back next year under the covid exemption rule, and even more likely Moser will move on (an analyst recently projected a 98% chance he'll get a power conference offer). I'd also note that while his player development is excellent and he finds the right fits for his program, his experience in recruiting/coaching high 4 and 5 star players is limited. Not saying he couldn't succeed, it's just not something we can accurately predict today. And at the end of the day I strongly believe that some coaches just fit much, much better in mid-major environments (Miller and Alford both being classic examples).

I concur with the first four in the same order. I'd also concur that Oats may eventually prove to be the best of the bunch. In a broad range of circumstances he's been very successful to date. I have a sneaking suspicion that Beilein will retire in a few years, otherwise I'd be fine with him. Pope is new to my radar.
  12. I picked up Loyola as my second team early this season (to fill my need to watch well coached hoops). Unless something changed Damezi is sitting out to retain a year of eligibility. I'm not sure how that works this season, but that's what I read early on.

IUBB at Rutger 8:00 on BTN

I concur that our fanbase puts tremendous pressure on the program. But the glaring issues associated with coaching are very real. Through a combination of recruiting and focus we lack the level of shooting required to consistently compete at this level. Our offense is simplistic and easy to both predict and defend. Our defense is static and thus increasingly easy to predict and attack. And finally the team as a whole (not to mention certain individuals) lacks the level of development and confidence needed to consistently hold leads and/or make comebacks in crunch time. I agree that Archie probably would have had more success at OSU. And Holtmann may have struggled more at IU vs OSU. But I don't agree that the extent of the gap between the two would have been so significant. The odds that the pressure of the IU job would have caused Holtmann to both miss and fail to correct so many issues are low.
  14. Same here. But for the past few games I've waited to see the final score and only watched recordings of the wins. I hate to admit that I'm becoming a fair weather fan, but this offense feels like a form of punishment.
  15. I think we're saying similar things but to me the fact that Archie is so passive on the sidelines really sets a tone. It implies that leadership is something he's just hoping to see, rather than something he is nurturing...and expecting! I want him to succeed but I just don't see it happening until/unless he starts leading by example.

What Can IUBB do to Revive Your Excitement/Confidence?

The calls/texts were not that big of a deal. But he intentionally broke the rules and also the reports of rampant drug use and players skipping classes did not sit with me. Since then IU has been too squeaky clean for its own good and has failed to land 'the guy', but despite his coaching ability I for one am glad Sampson is in our rear view mirror.

What Can IUBB do to Revive Your Excitement/Confidence?

I was too patient with Davis, and fairly patient with Crean. Perhaps because of that I'm not patient enough with Archie, but to me the writing is wall. We have individual players who display passion, but a team and indeed a program that fails to convey a sense of urgency.

What Can IUBB do to Revive Your Excitement/Confidence?

I'm really torn on Miller. The progress is there even though it's very gradual in the making. And this could end up being a surprisingly good season. But the difference I see between us and the teams you mention here is that we are a single injury (knock wood that won't happen with TJD) away from ending the year near the bottom of our conference. And the comment above about weight lifting...that's my biggest gripe. Much more time shooting over the summer, less lifting. We'd be so much better!

(2021) SF - Aminu Mohammed to Georgetown

Ideally both, but Mohammed strikes me as offering a high level of "refuse-to-lose" stuff (attitude, motor, skills). He's been #1 on my list for a loooong time. I do feel like our current freshmen are going to bring an attitude upgrade, but Mohammed stands out to me as being elite in that regard.

As a middle age white guy I fully support them. We are in a forever-loop of allowing petty politics and instigators to distract us from those issues. If there had been an ongoing theme of non-white police officers fatally shooting white civilians this would have been addressed long ago.
