Are We Better Than Last Year?

I figure that last night's game was basically meaningless and the question is being asked far too soon. The freshmen are going to play like freshmen for awhile, so we can't guess how good they are going to be until they have more games under our belt. Remember last year it looked like Franklin was going to be a stud after about five games but he faded as the games got tougher. Smith would have manhandled Tennessee Tech for about 30 last night. But we all know what would happened farther down The road. At this point all I can say is that the players we lost all had major negatives and I can't feel too bad about their leaving. On the other had this is the first IU team that I have seen in quite some time where I honestly "like" every player. That will probably change as the season progresses but I hope not. It will be nice to root for old IU without yelling at the TV constantly because I'm irritated by who is on the floor and what they are doing.

Lineup report from https://indianahq.com/indiana-vs-tennessee-tech-lineup-report/ The starting lineup of Phinisee, Franklin, Durham, Thompson, and Jackson-Davis did not play together at all last season. They outscored Tenn. Tech by six points in 4:08 to start the contest. In a similar vein, the lineup that had the largest +/- and most playing time on the night didn’t play together last season either, although they were all on the roster. Phinisee, Franklin, Durham, Hunter, and TJD scored a whopping 29 points in their 9:26 on the court, a stunning 3.07 points per minute (PPM). Anything above 2 PPM is usually really good. While the freshmen opened eyes with their play yesterday, Khristian Lander and Trey Galloway’s numbers tell a slightly different story. IU scored just 1.6 PPM in Lander’s 15:35 on the court, the lowest of all Hoosiers to play yesterday. On the other hand, IU gave up 1.81 PPM with Galloway on the floor, the highest of all Hoosiers.

    (2022) PG Bruce Thornton

Just don't understand how an Ohio State can pull that off but we can't. Pulling an out of state 5 star is no problem for them. DJ Carton leaves, no problem, just snag Bruce Thornton from SEC country.

If there was anyone off the bench that I think you'll see move into the starting line-up this year, it was Hunter.

It concerns me that this defense cannot stop penetration. It concerns me because it was created specifically to stop that very thing. The Davidson kid stole our lunch money last night in the 2nd half.. he’s the third option on a very bad team, and he exposed IU. He did most of it while Rob P. was out. Those of you who think Rob P. will be replaced? That’s a very bad idea. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Are We Better Than Last Year?

I think it’s near impossible to tell after playing a team of that caliber last night, but I did like what I saw from the new guys. They didn’t look completely lost, and they already have good chemistry with each other. I also liked what I saw from TJD (obviously) and Jerome Hunter. Another thing that I think will help us is playing in front of empty gyms this year. We’re probably going to rely on some freshmen for minutes. Not having to play in front of rowdy Big Ten crowds as freshmen should only help them.

I'm reserving judgment until after Maui. I don't think a valid assessment can be made based on last night's competition.

Arkansas hits 20 threes in a 142-62 win. Justin Smith? 0-0 from 3, 1-3 from the line. He is what he is.

    Let’s Play a Lineup Game

Jerome Hunter should start ahead of Race Thompson. Trey Galloway is a smart player who hustles. He might be a better starter than Armaan Franklin.

Leaving McCutcheon for prep school Real Salt Lake Basketball Academy in Utah, From the Lafayette Journal & Courier - McCutcheon was riding a wave of good fortune in its backcourt. After four years of Robert Phinisee, now a point guard for the Indiana Hoosiers, there was a one-year gap before Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn. The dynamic scorer put on one show after another last year as a freshman with his long-range shooting and an equally impressive mid-range game along with the ability to get to the basket and soar over defenders. It lasted one season. Gibbs-Lawhorn will leave McCutcheon for prep school Real Salt Lake Basketball Academy in Utah, he announced Tuesday. Following a freshman season where Gibbs-Lawhorn averaged 21 points per game, he received college offers from Indiana and Purdue with interest from Michigan State, Xavier, Cincinnati and Butler, according to recruiting service Rivals.com. Gibbs-Lawhorn, who starred in a Gatorade commercial that began airing early in March, suffered a foot injury that was going to cost him the 2020-21 high school season. He has not been cleared to play, but his rehab is ahead of schedule, Gibbs-Lawhorn's father Ben Gibbs said. The differing basketball schedule at Real Salt Lake Academy will allow Gibbs-Lawhorn to come back before its season ends. Real Salt Lake Academy is a first-year program coached by David Evans, previously coach at Wasatch Academy in Utah. Gibbs-Lawhorn plays for the Indiana Elite AAU program. He will remain at Real Salt Lake Academy for the duration of his high school career, according to his father.

3 schools prioritizing Brown. Indiana: “Coach Archie Miller and Kenya Hunter, we talk every day. We’ve built a great relationship over these past few months. I’m getting to know them as people and understand what they’re about on and off the court. It’s just been fun building a relationship with these guys. My family has talked to them also so I’m always in the loop with what they’re working on in practice and what they need to work on. I watch their film and really get the inside scoop on what’s going on in their program. https://www.zagsblog.com/2020/11/20/2022-guard-avery-brown-says-three-schools-making-him-a-priority/
