Pretty cool story about a kid who plays for Samford. His mother remarried when he was in the second grade, and his stepfather essentially raised him. So before family weekend, he changed his last name to that of his stepfather, who had no biological children and therefore, name his wouldn't go on. Now it will.

In my opinion, Tom Allen is not a good coach for the job. Also in my opinion, you should always give a football coach four years to evaluate where the program is. My first opinion being in conflict with the other, side with #2 because I am also of the opinion that my opinion is nothing more than that AND it can be wrong -- and therefore the bigger the sample space to evaluate, the better.

After year 2 and only year 1 with any of his recruits playing at all; given the roster, recruiting, and everything else you see; do people really want Archie fired now? Or...if not, do you want his seat hot enough that he feels it this season? That would be a huge mistake in my mind. 1) If "get old and stay old" is a strategy we agree on unless we can get 3-4 five star kids every year, doesn't it make sense to at least let us GET old? 2) Whoever we'd hire would be the 6th coach in 14 years. (Davis, Sampson, Dakich, Crean, Miller, and _____). Who would we legitimately attract with that carousel and obvious "win now or else" pressure? 3) If you do want him fired now, what is it you don't see happening which makes you think he needs to go? I know the records of his first 2 seasons. Leave those out. I think the "why" matters, and the "why" is legitimate in my mind. As of this moment, given what you see and what you know.....about now and what you can surmise about the future, why do you think he needs to go NOW? My 2 cents? He has recruited back to back Indiana Mr. Basketball and is likely to have a 3rd in a row already in hand. He has 2018 Ohio Mr. Basketball healthy, which I think is an "X factor" this season. He is building depth. I happen to know a former player pretty well (who remains close enough to the program for me to trust) who's told me the players are 100% bought in to Archie. The chemistry is allegedly 180* different than the poison a year ago. Everyone (according to the players) is on the same page and on the same agenda. Not true a year ago, even if I realize he had to recruit Romeo. We have depth (and perhaps the deepest front court in the Big Ten), a growing basketball IQ, players who work hard, and I saw a much improved team late last season compared to earlier in the year. And I saw HIM grow last season given play on the floor, some things that changed on the floor, and the fact that he jettisoned some dead weight. I prefer good coaches who will stay above a carousel of coaches because fans are impatient. I see no reason to fire him now or even have the discussion. I see no reason to light the match under his seat at this point. I think he needs at least another year, and maybe 2; and if given that time, I see consistent success in Indiana's future; and by that I mean consistent 22-24+ wins and top 3-4 conference finishes and NCAA tournaments every season. Results will be what they'll be beyond that; but Indiana will be in the discussion consistently. If that doesn't begin to manifest in the next 2 seasons, I can see the discussion having some merit; but I think those discussions now are premature and frankly pretty short-sighted.

How about a quarterback who completes 20 passes in a row and moves the chains to keep the defense off of the field? Not to mention one who can run the RPO, and is only going to get better. He's not just flinging the the ball 60 yards every play. Kids want to play with a dynamic talent like Penix!

IU Football will be IU Football until divisions are re-aligned. 7-8 wins is the ceiling and that is attainable. Trending positive. IU Basketball is in a great position for the long haul and they'll be fine for the short term. I'm not sure how anyone can look at the program and players we have and have coming and think otherwise. Will it mean national titles? Nobody knows. It DOES mean we'll have opportunities. You have to stop looking for track records because not a single circumstance is even similar. Crean left the cupboard bare. That's just truth. Archie has done about as well as he could re-stocking it, and if anyone says he's doing a poor job, they're being intellectually dishonest. What do you consider a low bar? Winning Big Ten titles or being in the top 4 consistently and making the NCAA tournament consistently with good results frequently is not a low bar. You accomplish what you can, and sometimes luck or circumstances take you farther or get you beat before you want to; but NCAA championships cannot be an expectation yet. Consistent success can, and I think it is. What's the low bar? IU football has a definite ceiling and a lower bar than some, but it's in pretty good shape at the moment. For what do you blame Glass aside from perhaps a quick hire of Allen?

Fire or ‘Way to Go!’ Tom Allen?

Good quarterback invariably = bowl game appearances. That’s true at IU or pretty much any power 5 school this side of Rutgers. Wilson looked quite good with Suds. Since then with Zander, Lagow, and Ramsey there’s been sadness. Now, with four years of Penix, we’re looking at four straight bowl appearances. So there.

Excellent player. Given our three 2020 sg/sf recruits I’m guessing we won’t have interest, but I guess kinda maybe we could?

Someone even mentioned that Penix wasn't the right quarterback for what we need. SMH! Not even sure what that means.
  11. 2 points
Jeez, are people still trying to discredit Penix? I'm legitimately shocked. He was one of 16 QB's given an elite grade by PFF in the country. People still doubting him are absolutely insane at this point, I don't think there are any two ways around it. I stopped coming here for a bit because it was almost absurd, and I come back thinking after MSU those opinions would rightly be gone, but apparently not.

If Penix continues to produce, I'm not sure we get four years with him...good problem to have.

A slide? If Glass attempted to put a slide in our football facility he would be eviscerated for putting children’s playground equipment in an adult area. I also was unaware that horseshoes was the game du jour for college students. Admittedly I haven’t been around the Deep South lately, but horseshoes? I guess that’s what it takes to have the #2 team in the country. I wonder if Alabama has a Lincoln Logs table set up for its players..... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Losing in Bloomington is their lowest moment? Their home is in New Jersey, I'm sure they'll have worse moments; like leaving Bloomington to go back to New Jersey.

    #IUMS vs. Michigan 3pm Sunday

Typical IU Michigan. Michigan goes all out against IU so eventually IU's talent will win out as happened today again and most previous games against Wolverines since they are good but not great. As I always say I give Michigan and Butler a lot of credit for always playing IU all out rather then parking the bus despite having a little less talent. Not sure how Glass fit that goal in from the angle he had but he managed and as a result we are in full control of the Big Ten and keep our home and Big Ten unbeaten streaks alive. Also its no accident our D has improved with the goalie switch from Caulfield to Celentano and switching Munie in for Kleyn at right center back. Both were weak spots on the D as seniors and the young freshman are already a lot better and Celentano has made really nice saves Caulfield couldn't. I do think the Big Ten streak ends Friday at Maryland Friday since we are a young team heading into a hostile and full atmosphere and Maryland is the one team who can match IU in pure talent in the Big Ten and only the third team overall we have played this year that can say this along with UK and ND. With that said I do think we beat OSU and Rutgers at home and tie Michigan St. on the road to finish 6-1-1 which will be more than sufficient to win the conference and get a high seed in NCAA tourney with at least two and maybe three home games. The freshman are impressive (amazing how 4 yrs of top recruiting rather than pretty good recruiting has restored the Hoosiers to its rightful place finally after a decade of relative mediocrity by IU standards) and the team has now earned their top 5 ranking despite all the changes. Lets finish strong.

Yeah I've settled down from my initial stance of firing him but I still need to see how this season ends to solidify my opinion of him. I didn't like that he showed fear and panic when in the driver's seat but like others have said let's hope that was a learning experience and it doesn't happen again.

The football bar has been set low since I can remember. And the basketball bar was pretty low when Glass took over. Not defending either person, but whether you're an optimist or pessimist, the realist in all of us needs to come out. Unless we give these coaches four to five years to fully cycle in their own players, we will continue this trend that started way before Glass or McRobbie arrived!

    (2020) PG - Hassan Diarra

Yes but this isn’t about wanting Lander more. Lander wasn’t considering a reclass until the IU staff presented it to him. He would never know why they decided to do it. That was just my guess because IU wanted a PG in the 2020 class. They didn’t land one that they liked so they turned to their top 2021 option to see if he would come early and potentially play with a couple of buddies that will already be on the team. Hoosier Hysteria

We always think we are “deep and have a flexible roster” in the preseason, then realize by B1G season we have 3 guys that are B1G level. I’m not sold on Race, Damezi, Justin Smith. I’m not sold on Brunk’s athleticism vs B1G bigs. Same for DeRon. Al D and Devonte are streaky shooters. Phinisee as a shooter?? Can Jerome stay healthy? Unfortunately this is why most rate us as 9th or 10th in the B1G. Time for some guys to step and exceed expectations as individuals and as a team. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

My opinion? This is a football program on the rise, especially with a high level quarterback firmly established for the next three + years. Stay the course, of course.

Fire or ‘Way to Go!’ Tom Allen?

Look Tom Allen may not be the coach for IU, but this is insane. He has had back to back the best recruiting classes at Indiana. There are so many freshman and sophomores on the field. He recruited what looks to be the best quarterback IU has had since ARE. And has done more than most IU coaches in their first two year in winning 5 games. This is Indiana football... what more are you expecting from a program that hasn’t won a bowl game since the early 90s and has only had one winning season since? He has the program headed in the right direction with that talent he is bringing in. But yes let’s just fire him. Give me a break Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
