I can definitely see why they would. I can’t comment on Walter McCarty the coach, but I can comment on Walter McCarty the person. He’s a phenomenal guy, just a really, really good person. In my NBA time with Celtics he was probably the best guy I worked with. Treated the front office staff with tons of respect (which isn’t always the case), went above and beyond in the community, and was a guy that would do things for the business people (pr, community and sponsor stuff) when others players wouldn’t show up, or would just refuse, etc. None of that means he’s capable of running a D1 college basketball program, I completely get that, but I can definitely see why coaches like that would go work with him. He’s just good people, and maybe they thought they could bring experience and help him learn the ropes.

    Baby announcement

My sister had her baby Thursday night around 10:00. Both mom and baby went home yesterday. They named him William but are calling him Will. Aunt Olivia lost out on her naming request again.

Certain Fitz was a nice kid that tried hard! Maybe they had him helping paint the new locker room, and this is the presence being referenced!

I don’t really understand the narrative that Archie isn’t passionate. You don’t have to be a cheerleader, jumping up and down on tv to be passionate about the program. He’s finding kids that want to be here truly. Before this year we didn’t really have ambassadors to the brand that were on the team. TJD alone will recruit every kid that gets an IU offer. Galloway is recruiting Dawson Garcia and Lander for us already. This hasn’t been happening in the last 10 years. Archie may not be showing his passion about the program on camera, but it’s there and he is landing kids that have the same passion and want to be here. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

His players have played exactly one season at Indiana. And he learned from that experience with a couple of them already gone. Last season, Indiana played with a freshman who really didn't have his game because of injuries and sights set to the next level (his not playing at all in the NIT was embarrassing); another freshman point guard who physically missed 6 games and probably played less than himself another 10, so Indiana was forced to play with guards incapable (until later) of running a team or guarding at the Big Ten level; an under-sized post player and no depth in the front court. I don't know about anyone else, but I saw effort improve late in the season. I saw an almost unbelievable to me metamorphosis of DeVonte Green. I saw a group of players who didn't fit here (and may have at Dayton) leave the program. I see a very successful focus on in state recruiting. I see the addition of Joey Brunk a HUGE positive. i see Jackson-Davis and Franklin as kids who will contribute immediately and likely stay for at least 3 seasons. (Get old and stay old....I'm all over that philosophy) And I see the departure of the 5* kid with the alternate agenda as addition by subtraction. Very good player and apparently a decent kid; bad fit. It happens. Still had to recruit him. I see Indiana as a program on the rise, and I believe this season will show dramatic improvement in many areas, and I do think we make the NCAA Tournament. I sincerely believe - using eyeball test only - I saw growth last season, I could almost see Archie learning. I do wish he'd hire Michael Lewis away and bring him to Bloomington, though. And in 2 years, bring Taylor Wayer back. That kid is going to be fantastic as a college coach if he wants to be.

Two years ago , because of their budget, UE eliminated their girls tennis program. Things haven't gotten any better. I know someone who was employed by them recently. They told me their pay continued to drop until they couldn't afford to stay on. Also Lance Wilkerson, who had been the senior associate athletic director, lost his job due to budget cuts. I have also heard, but cannot confirm, that baseball coach Wes Carroll is being paid by his brother Jamey, a UE graduate, 10 year MLB veteran, and current special assistant with the Pirates. So if I had to guess, these coaches left because of the $$. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Ok, and Archie has had transfers that didn't like him. But the original question remains. You don't think we've had players that wanted to be here truly or recruited others in the last 10 years?

ADAM ZAGORIA Javonte Brown-Ferguson, the 7-foot, 240-pound big man from Baltimore (MD) Mount Saint Joseph High School and the Under Armour Canada Elite AAU program, is considering reclassifying to 2020 from 2021, he told ZAGSBLOG on Saturday. Brown-Ferguson, who lives about 30 minutes outside of Toronto, said he’s “70-30” in favor of reclassifying and will make a final decision after the New Year. He holds offers from a slew of high-major Division 1 programs, including Maryland, Tulane, Oklahoma, Providence, Indiana, Kansas, Texas A&M, UConn, Seton Hall, New Mexico, Stanford, Georgetown, Ohio and Denver. Wisconsin, Illinois, Oregon, Ohio State, Marquette and Purdue are among those showing high interest. Brown-Ferguson, 16, said Indiana, Texas A&M, UConn and Marquette are working the hardest in his recruitment at this point. He broke down each school: Indiana: “They’re saying that they’ve been watching me since the live period in July in Atlanta. They were saying that they liked how hard I played, and they’re very interested in me coming to play in the 2020 class.” Texas A&M: “Pretty much saying the same thing. They like how I take directions and they see that I’m trying to following the coach’s orders.” UConn: “They pretty much say the same thing as Indiana. They like my intensity, how hard I played and how I brought good vibes to my team and how I had a good relationship with my teammates.” Marquette: “They haven’t offered yet, but they saw me play in Houston at the NCAA Academy, Session 2. Coach Dwayne Killings said he’s very interested, but they haven’t offered yet.” Brown-Ferguson said he plans to take some visits this fall but has none set yet. He models his game after Anthony Davis and Nicola Jokic, but hopes to follow fellow Canadians like Andrew Wiggins, R.J. Barrett and others into the NBA. “Yeah, 100 percent,” he said.

Calbert cheaney is our assistant coach in waiting. He called RJ Davis and said “I’m Calbert, you may not know me but I have an under the table deal with Indiana university that goes into effect after the dead period to be an assistant. meanwhile I want to introduce you to me friend Steph Curry as I was his coach at one time and we are collectively going to sway you to IU Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Corey Evans commenting on recruits closing in on their final decision. Leal has had a meandering recruitment that really didn’t pick up until the summer of his junior year. Xavier was the first to jump into the picture, followed by others such as Cincinnati, Northwestern, Ohio State and Stanford. Indiana has always been the perceived favorite, and once the Hoosiers offered in June some expected a commitment to follow. Instead, Leal remained patient with the process. He just narrowed his school list to the in-state Hoosiers and Stanford. Will he stay home and play with his good friend, Trey Galloway? Or will he decide to head westward to the elite academic institution? Likely, Leal will remain loyal to his state and suit up for the Hoosiers in the fall of 2020.

Ed Schilling Leaving, Mike Roberts Arriving

We’ve all got things that we question about the program. All of us. It’s the nature of fandom. But, dude, the guy chased a slew of guys for the open schollies and then fired a highly respected Asst with local ties for what appears to have been a lack of sufficient drive. There are legit things to question, but I don’t think aggression is close to one of them

To expand on the "Hoiberg is NOT setting Nebraska up for success" theory: I understand the older grad transfer and junior college transfer additions - those kids are placeholders until they find better talent. But, the freshmen and sophomores he's brought in so far? He'll be stuck with them for three/four years, and here's who he's signed: Akol Arop Omaha, NE F 6-6 190 Freshman, composite ranking 322 Dalano Banton Toronto, Ontario, G 6-8 195 Sophomore, 3.4 ppg at Western Kentucky Kevin Cross, Little Rock, AR F 6-8 240 Freshman, composite ranking 468 Samari Curtis, Xenia, OH G 6-4 190 Freshman, composite ranking 184 Cam Mack, Austin, TX G 6-2 175 Sophomore, composite 26th ranked junior college player Yvan Ouedraogo, Bordeaux, France, F 6-9 260 Freshman composite unranked Jace Piatkowski, freshman, Elkhorn, Nebraska, 6'4", 170 Freshman Walk-on, Unranked In summary, his "no-stone unturned" approach is finding a lot of moldy moss under those stones, and six of them will be on a three or four year scholarship ride with the Huskers.

Can FK provided concrete examples of Holtman and Mack “leaving no stone unturned” and where Archie did not do so? This is all just justification of a dislike for the hire. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

^^I just don't get it^^ Holtman was 8-12 in conference last year, and one game better than us overall. He has recruited well, but so have we. Mack was 20-14 last year (and quite good in the ACC), 1.5 games better than us. He inherited a pretty well-stocked cupboard, but he's also taking a big risk, because UL may be due for some severe punishment. Don't get me wrong; I truly think that Mack and Holtman are very good! I just don't see the empirical evidence that they have a markedly different style or one/two year performance than Archie. Hoiberg? He has assembled a roster of truly the wretched refuse from transfers and junior colleges. He was not able to retain any of the (mediocre) talent he inherited. He was also run out of town in Chicago - consecutive records of 42-40, 41-41, 27-55, 5-19 (fired). He's doing a small town tour of Nebraska currently. Is that what you mean by leaving no stone un-turned? Methinks he can look under every stone in that State and he won't find many/any worth of a spot on a B1G roster.

These are the kind of analyses that make me rip out my hair. He’s just not hopped up on yellow drink like Crean. He’s calm and collected. I don’t see any actually signals that he’s not taking this job seriously. I’ve met him and had conversation with him - he’s just a calm and serious individual. So with Crean he panicked and we hated it. With Archie, he is calm and we hate it. Either nobody is good enough for IU, or it’s an “us” problem and we should look in the mirror. Who would have known Bob Knights speech on game face would be prophetic in other areas. I am guessing we would all feel collectively better with our coach (and not feel he was weird) if he was doing this. Edit: I am not saying Archie is above criticism for the season. But we sure do gather a lot of intel from mannerisms that just haven’t been there. He has had how many televised interviews since the end of the season? I can recall one. But since that time we have determined he has an astronomically large leash because he is calm. Mmmkay. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
