Swimswam.com ranking the 2019 men's recruiting classes and we come in at #6.

#6: INDIANA HOOSIERS

Top-tier additions: #1 Brendan Burns (PA – back/fly/free), Harry Flanders (CA – fly), Jake Marcum (TN – back), Kai Bathurst (CA – free), Will Gallant (CT – distance)
The rest: Jacob Destrampe (IN – free), Max Scott (OH – sprint free)

The Hoosiers pull in top-ranked recruit Brendan Burns, who is a true do-everything star. 46-low in both the 100 back and 100 fly, Burns is a godsend for a team that has ruled medley relays lately, but graduated some key legs after last season. Burns can probably take over the fly legs of the medleys, and should also be an 800 free relay factor as a 1:34.1 out of high school.

Indiana has also generally had success in the IMs, and Burns could be a prime candidate there. He’s 1:44.8 out of high school, and could have one of the best front halves in all of college swimming. The Hoosiers lost a lot of key components from last year, but Burns should be a plug-and-play contributor as a freshman, which is rare on the men’s side.

Fly and back are the themes of this class. Harry Flanders (47.4/1:46.7) is a good flyer and also a pretty solid IMer. Jake Marcum (1:42.8/48.2) is a very good backstroker, though he’s much more pigeonholed to the 200 at this point. That freshman trio will give IU a lot of stroke options, and could make up the core of the medley relays down the road.

Speaking of relays, Jacob Destrampe (20.4/44.2/1:37.1) is relay depth in waiting, along with Max Scott (20.4/45.6), though Scott is much more of a drop-dead sprinter variety for now. At the other end of the spectrum is Kai Bathurst, a California prospect who goes 1:36.0 in the 200 free and maybe projects best in the 100/200/500 range.

Will Gallant (15:16 in the mile) adds a distance component to a pretty well-rounded class, though it’s a little surprising to see IU not rolling the dice on a breaststroker, considering the rousing success they’ve had in that stroke recently.

Fast riser to watch: Marcum is a very exciting backstroke prospect. He was 1:46.0 in the 200 back as a junior, and dropped 3.2 seconds over his senior year. Add in a 1.5-second drop in the 100 and his future looks pretty bright, especially if he can develop a good third event.

Not a good look for our swimming program.  Full article is behind a paywall, but here's what can be viewed online.

IU swimming coach charged with intimidation

An alleged threat made by Indiana swimming assistant coach Mike Westphal against another member of the local swim scene has resulted in charges being brought against Westphal for intimidation.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Westphal met with the victim to discuss the merger of Indiana Swim Club, a program he is affiliated with, and another local swimming organization. He threatened to blackmail the victim, a former swimmer at IU, if he didn’t encourage the board members and parents of that organization to merge with ISC, according to the affidavit.

Their conversation was recorded, the filing states, and Westphal made references to what investigators termed a "prior lawful act" that occurred while the victim was a swimmer at IU, which involved another coach. According to the filing, Westphal said he was "more powerful in the swimming community" than the victim, was in communication with the coach involved in the previous incident, and could "turn (the victim) in" if he wanted to.

The meeting occurred in April at a Bloomington restaurant, the court record states. The merger would result in "better shared pool times and financial gain for Westphal’s interests," the affidavit stated.

Westphal also said he "is ruthless" and could "squash" the victim, according to the filing.

Westphal was arrested on a warrant by Monroe County Corrections officers on Friday, Aug. 30. His bond was $2,505. Westphal filed to waive his initial hearing, court records show. He also filed a demand for a jury trial.

Westphal is in his sixth season as an associate head coach for IU, his 15th season overall with the Hoosiers. He is the lead coach for the men’s team, concentrating on the training of the distance- and middle-distance groups. In May, Westphal was added to the USA Swimming coaching staff for the summer’s international competitions.

IU officials said they will provide a statement later.

Pretty much the standard response and there's really nothing else an institution or business can do.  Allegations have been made and charges filed and now it's a wait and see situation for all concerned.

IU has released a statement:

"Indiana University Athletics has been made aware of the incident involving Indiana University associate head swimming coach Mike Westphal. IU Athletics will continue to gather facts and take further action as it deems appropriate."
