IU’s Thompson Named Candidate for 2016 Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Indiana University men's soccer's Tanner Thompson was named one of 30 candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award on Friday.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student and encourages them to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

"Tanner has joined an elite group within our soccer program," IU head coach Todd Yeagley remarked. "I consider him to be one of the special players to have worn the IU jersey.  His outstanding play on the field, along with his commitment to excellence within the Kelley School of Business is powerful combination.  Tanner is a great teammate who loves to compete everyday to be at his best - qualities that make him worthy of this this distinguished honor."

Thompson has been a leader on and off the field for the Hoosiers, helping IU reach the NCAA Tournament in his first three seasons as well as being an active member of the community. Thompson and his fellow Hoosiers have participated in Read Across America and at a children's therapy center in the community.

A two-time All-America honoree on the pitch, Thompson is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection for IU. This year, Thompson leads the No. 6 Hoosiers with four goals and two assists.

To be eligible for the award, a student must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Men's College Cup in December.
