Senior night in Bloomington but the Lady Hoosiers let Michigan score 2 goals in the last 6 minutes and take the win 3-2.  Lady Hoosiers struck first just 5' into the game on a goal by Mykala Brown her 7th of the season.  Second goal by Maya Piper at 78' her 2nd of the season.  But goals by Michigan at 84' and 88' and they go home with the win.  Ladies with only 9 total shots; 3 on goal; 2 corners.  Michgan with 22 total shots; 7 on goal; 10 corners.

But there is good news.  Ohio State lost to Penn State and that loss means that our girls clinch a berth in the B1G tournament that starts on the 30th.  Go IU!

Hoosier women's soccer end season in first round of Big Ten tournament

Throughout the season, IU Coach Amy Berbary has stressed the importance of her team learning how to start games better. Berbary has emphasized the need for IU to begin matches as the aggressor and to be the team on the offensive right from the first whistle.

However, being slow out of the gate helped contribute to the end of IU’s season Sunday afternoon.

Against the No. 11 Minnesota in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament, IU conceded the opening goal inside the first three minutes of the match. The Hoosiers, 7-9-4 overall and 4-5-3 in conference, were unable to overcome this early deficit in a 3-1 loss in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“We knew that Minnesota would probably score today,” Berbary said. “Unfortunately it happened in the first three minutes.”

Minnesota sophomore midfielder Molly Fielder slipped a pass to junior forward Julianna Gernes that Gernes lifted over IU freshman goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu and into the net.

The Hoosiers responded well after going behind, though. IU produced one of its better chances of the match in the eighth minute. Sophomore forward Maya Piper was able to settle a bouncing ball from an IU corner kick and produce a shot, although it went wide of net.

While Minnesota, now 14-3-3 overall and 7-1-3 in conference, had the majority of possession in the first half, the IU backline held strong and only allowed two shots on target. However, both of these shots resulted in goals for the Gophers, as senior midfielder Josee Stiever scored her eighth goal of the season in the 37th minute.

“We had a couple of chances, and we were able to hang in there the best we could,” Berbary said. “We just needed to finish a bit better.”

After entering halftime down 2-0, IU started the second half on the attack. Freshman midfielder Allison Jorden forced Minnesota senior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs into her first save of the match in the 49th minute with a header off a corner kick. Less than a minute later, freshman midfielder Chandra Davidson fired the first of her two shots in the match over the net.

The pressure from the Hoosiers continued as the second half progressed. Junior midfielder Kayla Smith nearly scored a goal in the 68th minute courtesy of a scorching shot from outside the box that rose just above the crossbar.

IU’s reward finally came with nine minutes remaining in regulation when two of IU’s most potent offensive players connected. Freshman defender Meghan Scott served a corner kick into the Golden Gopher penalty box where it was redirected into the net by sophomore forward Mykayla Brown.

The goal was Brown’s eighth of the season and restored some hope to both the IU players and traveling fans.

That hope was short-lived, though. Minnesota restored its two-goal lead three minutes later, with junior forward Sydney Squires’ scoring on a rebound after L’Hommedieu saved an initial shot from Stiever.

“We took a risk, we changed the formation and threw some numbers forward, but with that risk you take offensively, you leave yourself open,” Berbary said. “We gave it a go. It didn’t matter if we lost 2-1 or 6-0, with our season on the brink of ending.”

Regardless of the outcome Sunday, the season can already be categorized as a success for the Hoosiers. Simply making the Big Ten Tournament after being picked to finish 12th in the conference in the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll highlights just how much IU has achieved in Berbary’s fourth year as head coach.

“You’re always in game mode, going from the next one to the next one,” Berbary said. “I think it’s going to take me a while to look back and be able to understand what a year this was for this team.”

Borschke Named NSCAA Scholar All-Region

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer redshirt senior Marissa Borschke was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Second Team Scholar All-North/Central Region on Thursday.

The award is the latest in a series of academic accolades for the defender and Burlington, Ontario native, who is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was a 2015 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

To be nominated for NSCAA Scholar All-Region, a student must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout his or her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution. The committee then reviews both the academic and athletic accomplishments of the nominees in determining the honorees.

This marks the second straight season a Hoosier has earned the honor after Sarah Stone also received a second team nod in 2015.

Borschke, a two-time team captain, ended her Hoosier career tied for third all-time in games played with 80 and played in every minute since being inserted into the starting lineup on Sept. 15, 2013 against Central Michigan.

This season, Borschke netted a pair of goals and anchored Indiana's backline on the way to earning Third Team All-Big Ten honors, the first Hoosier to earn the conference award since 2013.

Borschke will graduate on Dec. 17 with a major in Legal Studies and plans to attend law school next fall.

Gonzalez Promoted to Associate Head Coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer head coach Amy Berbary announced on Thursday that Sergio Gonzalez has been promoted to associate head coach, effective immediately.

"Sergio has been such a significant and vital piece to this program and coaching staff since the beginning," said Berbary. "This promotion is a result of his hard work and commitment to our student-athletes, as well as the direction of the program. His roles and responsibilities with the goalkeepers, his eye for talent and his soccer knowledge on the field has continued to help us reach new heights."

Gonzalez, who works primarily with goalkeepers and defenders, has served as an assistant coach since Berbary's first season at Indiana in 2013.

"He has been with me since day one," said Berbary. "I still remember when I picked up the phone and called him 10 minutes after I was offered this job and said 'let's do this together.'"

This past season, Gonzalez coached freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu, whose 93 saves and 4.90 saves per game average led the Big Ten. In addition, L'Hommedieu earned three weekly conference honors and finished seventh in the country in freshmen saves.

The 2015 season saw the Hoosier defense post a scoreless streak of 463 minutes, the second longest in the history of the program, behind goalkeeper Sarah Stone. Stone, who was the cornerstone of the 2014 defense as well, finished her Indiana career ranked near the top of nearly every Indiana goalkeeping category, including becoming just the fourth Hoosier with 200-plus career saves.

During Gonzalez's first season with the Hoosiers, the team set a new single-season shutout record with nine behind goalkeeper Shannon Flower, whose 15 victories in the net was also a program record.

"These four years here have been very special," said Gonzalez. "This is a tremendous opportunity and honor.  I'm thankful to Amy, Eric Neuburger, Fred Glass and all the administration for giving me this chance. My family and I love Bloomington, love IU and are excited about the future of the program and the direction we're headed in."

Before coming to Bloomington, Gonzalez spent two seasons as the head coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  Prior to that, he and Berbary served as assistant coaches at University of Dayton. During his five years with the Flyers, the team won a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference titles and twice advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. From 2000-06, Gonzalez was an assistant coach for Slippery Rock University, guiding the team to a pair of conference titles and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Gonzalez currently serves as the head goalkeeper coach for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II ODP, working with the 2000 age group, and has also coached for U.S. Soccer Development Camps.
