IU Women's Soccer 2016 Season

IU shows grit in road victory

Resiliency has been a key trait of the IU women’s soccer team this season, and it was on full display Thursday night against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

After the Buckeyes scored two goals in four minutes to tie the match 2-2 in the second half, it appeared as if the Hoosiers had lost control of the game. However, a pair of substitutes combined to provide IU with the game’s winning moment.

Sophomore defender Caroline Dreher found freshman midfielder Sydney Kilgore with a cross into the Ohio State penalty box that Kilgore volleyed into the net in the 73rd minute. Kilgore’s second goal of the season stood as the match-winner as IU, 6-7-3 (3-3-2), defeated Ohio State, 9-5-2 (3-3-2), 3-2 in a game critical to IU’s Big Ten postseason hopes.

“Caroline played me through with a great long ball, and I just had good timing at the front post,” Kilgore said. “It’s awesome to contribute. Just being a freshman and being able to make a difference is important, especially late in the season when these points matter.”

Momentum shifted on countless occasions between the Buckeyes and Hoosiers at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, although it was the visitors who gained the upper-hand early on.

IU opened the scoring in the seventh minute through freshman midfielder Chandra Davidson. Davidson was on hand to score on a rebound shot after sophomore forward Mykayla Brown had her shot saved by Ohio State junior goalkeeper Megan Geldernick.

Following the IU goal, Ohio State went on the offensive and enjoyed most of the possession and goal-scoring opportunities prior to halftime, but IU freshman goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu was only forced into two first half saves.

“We were outshot by Ohio State 19-8 tonight, but only six of their shots were on goal,” Berbary said. “I thought we did a great job of capitalizing on our chances.”

It was this kind of wasteful offense by Ohio State that allowed IU to double its lead in the 62nd minute.

Freshman defender Meghan Scott delivered a corner kick deep into the Ohio State penalty box, finding unmarked freshman midfielder Allison Jorden. Jorden guided the ball into a gaping net with her head to give IU a 2-0 advantage.

Within six minutes, though, the Hoosier lead had been erased. Junior midfielder Emma Firenze scored from a low cross in the 64th minute to pull one back for the Buckeyes before senior forward and leading scorer Lindsay Agnew equalized in the 68th minute.

“They pushed their three forwards a bit higher after going down two goals, and I felt we got stretched in the midfield,” Berbary said.

Soon after this defensive lapse, Berbary made the decision to put both Dreher and Kilgore into the match, a choice that ultimately won the game for the Hoosiers.

A late surge by the Buckeyes nearly forced extra time, with sophomore midfielder Sarah Roberts striking the crossbar in the 77th minute. However, the Buckeyes’ best chance to equalize came with mere seconds left on the scoreboard.

Senior forward Nichelle Prince drove into the IU penalty box and created a look on goal, but L’Hommedieu dove to her right to collect the shot and seal the win.

Now with 11 points from eight Big Ten games, IU will travel to Maryland, 3-12-1 (1-7-0), on Sunday afternoon with a chance to further its hold on a place in the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament.

“We are in a position where we are in the driver’s seat of our own destiny,” Berbary said. “The three points we got are huge, but we have to keep our head.”

Game Recap: Women's Soccer | 10/16/2016 5:14:00 PM |

Indiana Shuts Out Maryland, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana Women's Soccer completed a perfect conference weekend by shutting out Maryland on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.  The game comes on the heels of a 3-2 victory at Ohio State on Thursday night.

"I think the two wins shows our growth and confidence as a team," said redshirt senior Marissa Borschke. "Coming from a game on Thursday that was more offensive-minded, today was more of a battle and more of a fight. It was a Sunday game and this is where you have to push through mentally. It takes all of us to come out with six points on the weekend."

The win marks the first complete weekend for the Hoosiers (7-7-3, 4-3-2 Big Ten) since 2013. Going back to a 1-1 draw with Penn State on Oct. 6, it is also the first time Indiana has earned at least one point in four straight contests since 2009.

Additionally, it puts Indiana into sole possession of eighth place in the Big Ten with two games to go. The top eight teams will advance to the conference tournament.

Borschke's header in the 34th minute proved to be the difference maker in the win against Maryland (3-13-1, 1-8-0 Big Ten), while freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu tallied three saves in her fourth shutout of the season.

The Hoosiers outshot the Terrapins, 10-6, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

"I think today was a classic example of a team that is willing to fight no matter what the game throws at us," said head coach Amy Berbary. "A win's a win and we put ourselves in a position to walk away with the points. Having a veteran in Marissa send in the game-winner and, on the other end, having a freshman in L'Hommedieu step up again and again in big moments was key to our success today."

Indiana's first look of the day came off the foot of sophomore Maya Piper in the 16th minute, but the shot was saved by Rachel Egyed for a Hoosier corner, which was cleared by Maryland.

Three minutes later, the Terrapins got a look of their own as Jlon Flippens sent in a ball to L'Hommedieu. The rebound popped out, but junior Kylie Kirk was there to clear the ball out of danger.

Freshman Macy Miller put up a great look for the Hoosiers in the 33rd minute. It was saved but seemed to spark the Indiana offense as IU quickly earned a throw in, which was pushed out by the Terrapins for a Hoosier corner. Freshman Meghan Scott served the ball in to Borschke, who headed it from the right. The ball bounced a yard outside of the goal line, but back up off Egyed's hands and into the the net.

The assist was the second in as many games for Scott and a team-leading fifth of the year.

"It was just a matter of being able to break free get a head on the ball," said head coach Amy Berbary. "It was a class header by Marissa, who headed the ball down and past the keeper's hands."

L'Hommedieu's biggest stop of the day came just out of halftime as Jarena Harmon sent in the ball from six yards out. As L'Hommedieu was diving to her right, the shot was blocked by her left foot to keep the game at 1-0.

Up next, the Hoosiers head to West Lafayette on Saturday night to face Purdue in the annual Golden Boot Game. First kick is set for 7 p.m.

L’Hommedieu shines in goal as women's soccer freshman

Cameron Drummond - Indiana Daily Student

Several of the 11 true freshmen on this season’s IU roster have contributed significantly to the team’s resurgence on the field, but one freshman in particular has stood out.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu has starred in net for the Hoosiers this season and started 16 of the team’s 17 matches. In total, L’Hommedieu has been in goal for more than 1,500 minutes this
season for IU.

She has credited this high amount of playing time with helping her adjust to her first season playing college
soccer.

“Obviously, as a freshman, you are not used to playing with some of the people that you have in front of you,” L’Hommedieu said. “Getting to know the way that people play, their strengths and how I can fit into that equation helps me become more comfortable playing with them.”

L’Hommedieu’s confidence has grown as the season has progressed, and it did not take her long to make an impression. In IU’s first win of the year at Butler, L’Hommedieu recorded a career-high eight saves for her first career shutout.

L’Hommedieu has reached the eight-save mark on two other occasions this season, but the initial performance against the Bulldogs signaled to her she was ready to be the starter.

“The Butler game was our defensive breakthrough,” L’Hommedieu said. “We discovered that we are really good as a group back there.”

Just two days after the Butler match, the Hudson, Ohio, native shut out Northern Colorado, 3-0, at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The weekend display earned L’Hommedieu two weekly honors from the Big Ten as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman Player of the Week.

The Freshman Player of the Week award was given to L’Homemdieu for a second time Oct. 11 after she made a combined 15 saves against No. 16 Penn State and
Rutgers.

The Hoosiers were able to claim a point apiece from their matches against the Nittany Lions and Scarlet Knights, two teams that made the Final Four of last season’s NCAA Tournament. L’Hommedieu playing a significant role in both games.

“The coaching staff and the rest of the team has full confidence in Sarah,” IU Coach Amy Berbary said. “You can just see her getting better every week. She trains so hard, and I give a lot of credit to my assistant Sergio Gonzalez. He is always pushing her and has helped get her to where she is.”

Gonzalez is praised by not only Berbary but also L’Hommedieu when it comes to his affect on her play this season. Gonzalez was a big factor in L’Hommedieu’s decision to enroll at IU a semester early in spring 2016.

L’Hommedieu said she was very skeptical about arriving on campus early and forgoing the final part of her senior year of high school but placed a great deal of trust in Gonzalez.

“I talked to Sergio a lot, and he has a record of training excellent goalkeepers,” L’Hommedieu said. “I thought that if he thought I needed to come early, that’s what I had to do. It’s about trusting the coaches, and obviously it’s paid off for me, like he said it would.”

L’Hommedieu’s 79 saves this season lead all Big Ten goalies and has her tied for the 37th-most saves nationally. Her 0.775 save percentage lags behind the majority of conference goalkeepers but is largely a product of the high number of shots she has faced this season.

However, like her fellow freshmen, she tries to focus on the future and approach every day the right way instead of dwelling on stats or past results.

“Every day is a new joy for us freshmen,” L’Hommedieu said. “We are just happy to be playing for IU and happy to be representing our school.”

Women's soccer seeks to regain Golden Boot

It has been a while since the final games of the Big Ten regular season mattered to IU.

In both 2014 and 2015, the Hoosiers were eliminated from reaching the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament prior to the final matches of regular season play. However, this is not the case this season.

IU, 7-7-3 overall with a 4-3-2 conference record, is eighth, the final spot for the conference tournament, in the Big Ten standings. With 14 points gained in conference play, IU leads Ohio State by two points and Illinois by four points in the race for eighth place with two matches remaining for each team.

These factors only increase the importance of IU’s match against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday night. Not only will IU be looking to solidify its spot in the Big Ten postseason, but it will also be playing for the Golden Boot, a trophy IU has won in three of the last four seasons.

“If we can get the boot back, our seniors will have had it for three of their four years, so that’s important for those guys,” IU Coach Amy Berbary said. “But there’s a bigger picture. Three more points would get us that much closer to securing a spot in the postseason and getting us another game.”

Berbary and the current group of IU players have never lost a match at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Indiana, and scored wins against Purdue in 2013 and 2014 while also going 2-0 in last season’s Boilermaker Challenge Cup at Purdue.

Saturday’s match will only have Big Ten tournament ramifications for the Hoosiers because the Boilermakers, 4-11 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten, have already been eliminated from reaching the postseason. After winning its initial conference game at Illinois, Purdue dropped six consecutive conference matches to fall into the bottom part of the Big Ten table.

Fortunes have improved for Purdue of late, though, after it recorded a 1-0 home win over Maryland on Oct. 13. While Purdue may already be eliminated, Berbary said she still expects a tough test to come from the Boilermakers.

“It’s a cool environment that Purdue has. Their fans are right on top of you,” Berbary said. “We just love to play there, but it will be a very emotional game. We just have to make sure the mental side of our game is on as well.”

Scoring has been an issue for Purdue this season. The Boilermakers have scored only 12 goals in 15 games. When goals are generated by the Boilermaker offense, though, they usually come from junior midfielder Andrea Petrina or senior forward Hannah Leinert.

Petrina and Leinert have each recorded two goals and three assists and will be looking to add to their tallies against IU.

An IU victory and a draw or loss by Ohio State against Michigan on Saturday would confirm IU’s spot in the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament. The Hoosiers have earned the right to control their postseason destiny as a result of their recent form, as the Hoosiers have taken points from five of the last six matches, and a current four-match unbeaten run.

However, Berbary points to one match in particular as a turning point for the team.

“I really do think the turning point for us was the 3-2 victory over Wisconsin. We were able to find a way to get it done and we’ve gone on a nice little run at the right time,” Berbary said. “When you’ve got 27 kids and a coaching staff of three that believe, anything can happen.”

Indiana Looks To Reclaim Golden Boot And Solidify Tournament Spot

Sam Beishuizen | Staff Writer.

The Golden Boot goes on the line again Saturday, but the annual IU-Purdue women’s soccer rivalry trophy game’s implications span much further than that.

The Hoosiers (7-7-3, 4-3-2) find themselves in the thick of a race to get into the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2013. IU is clinging onto the eighth and final spot in the conference’s postseason tournament with just two games left, but the Boilermakers (4-11-0, 2-7-0) will be trying to play spoiler.

“This really is a big game,” redshirt sophomore forward Mykayla Brown said. “It’s so much more than just about the Golden Boot. We’re looking at it as a game we’ve got to pull out if we want to get to the Big Ten Tournament.”

Still, the Golden Boot holds meaning enough it in of itself.

“We love having the Golden Boot,” fifth-year senior defender Marissa Borschke said. “I think it makes it that much more exciting of a game, especially with an in-state rival. Playing for something and then playing for the Golden Boot on top of it makes it a huge game.”

Borschke’s senior class has held the Golden Boot for two of the last three years, only losing it last season 2-0. Under head coach Amy Berbary, IU is undefeated in West Lafayette, where Saturday’s 7 p.m. match will be played, having won twice against Purdue and two more games against Baylor and Missouri in last season’s Boilermaker Challenge Cup.

For whatever reason, Berbary said her team has something figured out about playing in West Lafayette.

“It’s a cool environment that Purdue has,” Berbary said. “Their fans are right on top of you. We just love to play there, but it will be a very emotional game. We have to make sure the mental side of our game is on.”

Purdue is already eliminated from Big Ten Tournament contention, but Indiana is rolling. The Hoosiers have taken points in five of their last six games to shoot up the conference table. They currently sit in a tie for seventh with Nebraska, two points ahead of Ohio State and four points ahead of Illinois.

The player don’t need reminding. The staff has the standings posted on the team’s equipment shed at its practice facility behind the University Gym.

Three points would certainly help.

“I really do think the turning point for us was the 3-2 victory over Wisconsin. We were able to find a way to get it done and we’ve gone on a nice little run at the right time,” Berbary said. “When you’ve got 27 kids and a coaching staff of three that believe, anything can happen.”

That's it from Pigtown.  After 110 minutes, the game ends in a tie:  2-2.    Both Hoosier goals from Mykayla Brown.  Lady Hoosiers with 17 total shots; PUke with 31 total shots so our freshman goalkeeper did another outstanding job for us tonight.

Final regular game of the season next Wednesday in Bloomington - Senior Night - against Michigan; 6:00 ET start time.

One would think the Ladies would want to get this one over with so they could get out of Pigtown ASAP, but no, they've decided they want to play another OT.

If you've ever been there, you'll know that the stench of Pigtown can inhibit your motor skills.
