IU Women's Soccer 2016 Season

Recommended Posts

This weekend, the Lady Hoosiers participated in the Virginia Tech Invitational at Blacksburg, VA.  On Friday night they faced #18 ranked Virginia Tech (6-0-1) and were blanked 3-0.  On the season, Va Tech has now netted 16 goals and only allowed 5 so this was a touch challenge for our ladies.

This afternoon, they defeated James Madison 4-2 getting 2 goals from Mykayla Brown and 1 each from Kayla Smith and Caroline Dreher.  IU's three first-half goals was the most for the Hoosiers since scoring three in the second half against George Mason on Sept. 5, 2014, which was also the last time the program has netted four goals in a game.

Ladies open B1G play on Thursday the 15th at Northwestern; game to be televised on BTN 8:00 ET.

Prior to this weekend's event, all six of Indiana’s goals this season have come from different players with Veronica Ellis, Annelie Leitner, Caroline Dreher, Mykayla Brown, Cassidy Blacha and Maya Piper all finding the back of the net. Freshmen goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu sat at second in the Big Ten in saves per game with five and was tied for second in total saves with 25.

The Hoosiers have seen an immediate impact from its newcomers with eight freshmen seeing action in last Monday’s game against SMU. Macy Miller, a native of Carmel, Ind. leads the team in shots with 11 and shots on goal with five. In addition, Chandra Davidson is tied for third in shots with eight on the year. Five Hoosier freshmen have made multiple starts so far this season, including five freshmen starters on Monday.

Tonight (the 15th) the Ladies travel to Northwestern for an 8:00 ET extremely tough game against the Wildcats.  The Wildcats are a perfect 7-0-0 on the season and have registered six shutouts while allowing just one goal on the year. Northwestern is outscoring opponents by a total of 13-1 and hold a 114-46 advantage in shots.  Safe to say we are the underdog in this one.

Game will be televised on your basic BTN channel.

From Cameron Drummond and the Indiana Daily Student:

Foreign women’s soccer freshman finds footing at IU
Transitioning to college soccer has been a common challenge for some members of the IU women’s soccer team this season.

For freshman midfielder Julia De Angelis, though, the journey has been especially long.

A native of Canberra, Australia, De Angelis, who is currently in a starting role for IU Coach Amy Berbary, has had a decorated start to her young playing career.

“Julia has been fantastic for us,” Berbary said. “She has played at the highest level possible with the Australian national team and has come here and helped us out a lot in the midfield.”

De Angelis has represented Australia at both the under-17 and under-20 levels. As a member of the Australian under-17 national team, De Angelis played in qualifiers for the Asian Cup in the Philippines and also went on a playing tour of South Korea with the team.

Before arriving at IU, De Angelis made a name for herself in Australia playing for semi-professional soccer club Canberra United. While differences exist between the styles of play De Angelis experienced in Australia and the style of play at IU, she credits Berbary with helping the change be a smooth one.

“It’s always going to be slightly different coming from another country to another coaching technique, but Amy is a professional coach,” De Angelis said. “She has the same kind of mentality, and she brings out the best in me and the other girls on the team as well.”

Canberra United is one of the nine teams that compose the W-League, the highest-level women’s soccer league in Australia. De Angelis was awarded the team’s W-League Rising Star award in both 2014 and 2015. The opportunity to play for the club was presented to De Angelis after she played well as captain of the women’s soccer team at the ACT Academy of Sport in Canberra.

The highlight of De Angelis’ time with Canberra United came in 2014 when the team won its second W-League championship. De Angelis started several matches for Canberra United during that championship season, although not in the same position she currently plays at IU.

“I’ve been playing as a number 10 recently, and I have never really played in that attacking position before,” De Angelis said. “I’ve had to get used to trying to have an attacking mindset.”

After not playing for IU in the first five matches of the season, De Angelis has played in each of the team’s last five games. She recorded her first collegiate assist in IU’s 4-2 victory against James Madison on Sept. 11 and started IU’s Big Ten conference games against Northwestern and Illinois.

“In the midfield you need to really work as a unit,” De Angelis said. “It’s not just individuals out there running. Our defensive shape is something that we’ve improved on in each game, and we keep trying to solidify it. It’s just about getting used to working with everyone who is going to be coming into the midfield together.”

Aside from adapting to life at IU on the pitch, De Angelis has also had to adjust to a new country and style of living. The American university system is very different from higher education in Australia, but De Angelis said it is a change of pace that has pleased her.

“Culturally in Australia, college isn’t as big of a thing,” De Angelis. “We don’t really have college sports and if I was going to college in Australia, I probably wouldn’t be living on campus. It’s really different in that sense. It’s something nice and something new.”

WTG Hoosiers!

Indiana Women's Soccer defeated Wisconsin at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 3-2. Scores from three different Hoosiers contributed to Indiana's biggest offensive output in a regular season conference game since a 3-2 win at Michigan State in 2013.

"It's huge," said freshman Allison Jorden. "Every single game in the Big Ten is going to be competitive. It's so important that every time you get the chance to walk away with three points, you do."

The Hoosiers (5-6-1, 2-2-0 Big Ten) had to fight back from an early deficit as the Badgers (4-4-4, 1-2-1 Big Ten) scored in the seventh minute after a Micaela Powers throw in was headed on by Alexis Tye right to the foot of Emily Borgmann, who sent it in past Indiana goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu's left shoulder.

Jorden found the equalizer for Indiana on her first career goal in the 21st minute. Fellow freshman Meghan Scott served the ball in on a free kick to Jorden, whose header went off Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem's fingertips and into the back of the net.

Junior Kylie Kirk gave Indiana its first lead of the day just nine minutes later. After the Hoosiers earned a corner kick, sophomore Justine Lynn had her shot blocked with the rebound going to Jorden. Jorden's shot hit just inside the crossbar and popped back out to Kirk, who buried it into the lower right corner of the goal. The score also marked Kirk's first career goal.

The Hoosiers held an 11-1 shot advantage at the half and finished the game with 16 attempts, tying the season high set against Louisville on August 19.

"We've been figuring out a way to get ourselves some chances and execute on those chances," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "I thought we finally did that today."

Indiana's 2-1 lead didn't last long into the second half however as Rose Lavelle equalized the game on a score from the top of the 18-yard box.

"Even if we get scored on, we never look back and think we're not confident enough to get back," said sophomore Cassidy Blacha.

Blacha found the game-winner for Indiana in the 78th minute. After a blocked shot from freshman Sydney Kilgore following an IU corner kick, Blacha turned into the ball on a Wisconsin clearing attempt, pushing it into the goal with her hip.

"For us to come back from 1-0, then come back again at 2-2," said Berbary. "Scoring on set pieces, that's going to win and lose you games. We've been working so hard on those everyday at training and we were finally able to capitalize on it."

Up next, the Hoosiers hit the road for a showdown with Nebraska on Friday in Lincoln. First kick is set for 8 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.

Cameron Drummond - Indiana Daily Student:
There are certain games in a team’s season that serve as season-defining moments.

These matches are looked back upon as either positive turning points where a team began to hit its stride or negative moments when a team failed to rise to the occasion.

Friday night’s Big Ten match at Nebraska has the potential to be one of those pivotal moments this season for the IU women’s soccer team and IU Coach Amy Berbary.

“Our goal all along has been to make the Big Ten tournament,” Berbary said. “You have to try to get some points every weekend to make the final eight.”

IU, 5-6-1 overall with a 2-2 mark in conference play, only has one conference match this weekend to try to pick up points. The Hoosiers have a bye Sunday after playing the Cornhuskers on Friday.

This makes getting a result on the road against Nebraska all the more important for IU. Nebraska boasts an 8-4 overall record after 12 games this season but finds itself tied with IU in the Big Ten standings.

The Cornhuskers and Hoosiers are currently tied for fourth place in the Big Ten standings, although each team has taken a different route to earning six points through four Big Ten games.

Victories against Michigan State and Ohio State by a combined 5-0 scoring margin demonstrated Nebraska’s offensive power. Of the 20 Cornhusker goals scored this season, eight have come from senior forward Jaycie Johnson. Additionally, junior midfielder Haley Hanson has scored five times.

“Nebraska is a very, very good team, and they play an interesting style,” Berbary said. “We need to keep possession because they are a very direct team. We’ll just need to keep the ball in front of them and not give it away in the middle of the field.”

In stark contrast to the way Nebraska has produced the majority of its goals this season, IU has received offensive production from a variety of sources. Nine different Hoosiers have scored this season, the most since 11 different players scored in 2013, the latest season in which the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Three different goal scorers played a part in last Sunday’s 3-2 home win against Wisconsin, which Berbary has stressed as a key element of the team’s improvement this season.

“We were very good and threatening in the final third against Wisconsin,” Berbary said. “It’s not just the goals. We kept fighting. That’s the type of stuff we have to have.”

A battle of freshman goalkeepers will also take place Friday evening at Barbara Hibner Soccer Stadium in Lincoln.

IU freshman goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedieu has impressed since taking control of the starting job in late August. Her 53 saves this season are the second-most of any goalkeeper in the Big Ten.

However, Nebraska freshman goalkeeper Aubrei Corder has also performed well. Corder has held opponents to only 1.14 goals per game this season as a result of her 43 saves in net.

While Nebraska and IU have contrasting styles of play, Berbary said she plans to alter very little ahead of the game.

“I don’t think we are going to change much. We are just going to keep doing what we’re doing,” Berbary said.

Nebraska scored at 52' and hung on to take a 1-0 victory.  Just not a good offensive effort as the Lady Hoosiers could only muster 5 total shots and 1 corner.  Also called for 11 fouls to only 6 for Nebraska.  Fouls coupled with 5 offsides and we never got into any rhythm or momentum. Ladies record falls to (5-7-1) (2-3-0).

Ladies are idle until Oct. 6, when Penn State pays a visit to Bloomington.
