Gardening Thread

Recommended Posts

After lying fallow, the garden thread pokes through the soil again! Anyone still gardening? I broke dow and built raised beds this year. I put concrete blocks around it and put marigolds, salvia and basil in the holes (deer repellent)

Hey Mamasa, looks good!  I just planted garden boxes this year also.  My boys are 4 and 1, and I'm working through a transition from old hobbies to new hobbies at home.  Going to try gardening.

Looks like you're doing the Square Foot Garden method by Mel Bartholomew?  I'm trying it, right down to the vermiculite/peat moss/compost soil mixture.  I finally got the last ones planted on Saturday, and now I'm afraid it's all going to freeze.

This weekend, I missed most of the good EYBL action because I'd rather be at home elbow deep in manure-mixture than following IU recruiting.  So there's that.

I love the square foot concept- I get so much more of a yield from it!  I'm still doing zucchini/tomatoes/vining plants in my regular beds, since I don't want to waste the space.  My composter is junk, so i'm doing a ghetto trash can version of a composter, lol.  I'm holding off until this weekend for my peppers/tomatoes/squash/eggplant, since we're just past the frost free date in mid-southeast Indiana.

We have everything growing on the dining room table right now. Still waiting for it to warm up to get them planted outside. We have zuchini, turnips, kale, an assortment of tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. Gardening is pretty huge up here despite the short growing season. 20+ hours of sunlight makes up for it and everything grows well except corn. For some reason corn doesn't grow. I have asked around and the old locals say it is because corn needs night time. That sounds strange to me, but maybe one of you corn specialist can answer that one.

I'm absolutely shocked Alaska.  I was certain the only thing you could probably grow were popsicles and sno cones.  :103:

Igloos make for great greenhouses! He can grow everything from moss to....different species of moss.

What kind of soil do you have (clay/loam/sand/etc?).  I'm on a lot of clay and have trouble with corn (I'm also too cheap to plant it when I can get it on the way home at 3 different farmers markets 5/$1, lol).

i use raised beds. up here where i live we are on big hills and there is alot of shale and clay. Of course, the valley folks have good soil. But, i have no idea what it is. Most of them have permafrost though and can't plant till later in the season so they use raised beds too. If we were down in South Alaska, they have a much more temperate climate and the soil is amazing. They have difficulties with corn too. Oh, i have a question: Has anyone tried growing potatoes in hay/straw instead of soil? my buddy did it last year and the taters were awesome.

Think I’m done planting (until I find another interesting plant lol). Potatoes coming along nicely in their container, and full garden doing its thing. I ended w: snow peas, snap peas, bush beans (purple, yellow and green), Brussels sprouts, broccoli, eggplant, onions(green, yellow, red and white), carrots (purple and orange), Swiss chard, jalapeño, yummy peppers, romaine, butter crunch, 3 different radishes, cucumber, zucchini, patty pan squash, yellow crook neck, strawberry crown squash, 8 kinds of tomatoes, a new spicy bell pepper (Mexi-bell?), and a bunch of herbs. My wife is ready to kill me lol. My first sweet cherries were picked today too!

No pics from this year?

Honestly kind of forgot about this thread!  Once it gets below 2546 degrees, I'll be sure to update!  But, I've decided to expand next year, as I have used pretty much every available area in mine lol! 24 tomatoes, canteloupe, watermelon, 6 or 7 squash, plus my 10x4 raised bed

Very cool thread.  I had no idea there was a thread for this.  I own a small licensed nursery I run on the side.  I'm glad to see fellow gardeners on here, and I will enjoy checking in occasionally.  My nursery specializes in permaculture (a lot of perennial edibles and "functional plants"), but I also sell and grow a vast assortment of ornamental plants as well.  I'm down for a thread like this.
