Walking Boot of Doom

It's not easy being Tom Crean

Recommended Posts

Great read! Year 4-5 were great. Years 1-3, 6 and 7 not so much. I really am rooting for Crean but I also don't want to waste 7 more years of IUBB if he can't get it done. I don't NEED to have a banner to be pacified. Just want to be a perennial contender for it. To be relevant and revered.

In his career spanning the better part of 20 years there is absolutely nothing, not a thing, that says he can reach the expectations we should have here.  He's never won consistently and he's finished outside the top 5 of his conference more than he's finished in the top 5.  Almost 20 years of evidence says this is about as good as it gets with Crean; his results haven't really elevated with Indiana's resources compared to Marquette's, he turned Indiana into Marquette.

I don't buy the law of averages thing either, because of how long he's been coaching.  Over 20 years things will balance themselves out, and what we've seen here is consistent with his time at Marquette.

The coaches he's paid to be among all accomplished more in the same time frame; they'd all shown that they could succeed at a high level.  Crean hasn't.  People don't want to give Cal credit for being a good coach, yet he accomplished more before he got to UK than Crean has in his entire career.

EDIT:  The only thing that suggests the best is ahead with Crean is hopes and dreams.  His history says otherwise.

Its a great read. I don't think he is the best coach but we as a fan base have treated him like dog shit. No matter how much money a man makes or what his title his he should be respected. That man gets ridiculed more than any coach I have ever seen. That includes Mike Davis.

I'm just curious.  What percentage of your posts & "likes" reflect this?

well, considering I was happy with 2/7 years with Crean, I'd imagine my percentage to be approximately the equivalent percentage of 2/7. Edit- We have a chance to improve that ratio to 3/8 this year. But then could be the dreaded 3/9 next year.

I think the fan base needs to wake up and demand better.
Not arguing if he's a nice guy but he gets paid three million a year for better results.
We've only seen the sweet sixteens the past 9 years. Middle tier programs would be upset with that let alone blue bloods.
Nice guy withstanding, stop being ok with this. It's not personal or greedy to demand a little better.
I'm tired of these sympathetic articles. It serves only to lament expectations. I've been a fan for over thirty years and it hurts seeing these teams show no distinct improvement on defense and after all these years that's a reflection of coaching.
I hope he affords more time to teach defense and changes his in game tactics. But if he chooses not to that's on him and needs to be fired if he doesn't go to the dance.

It's all good.  Even if it were to turn out to be 3/9 for you, at least percentage wise we are trending up from 28 to 33.  I hope the staff and players blow the roof off of these numbers for you.  Regardless of the outcome, you come with a lot of passion and I appreciate your many twitter updates on a wide variety of iubb conversations.  Thank you for that!

Great read.

I believe in the law of averages. In his seven years, Tom Crean hasn't really had one year where things "broke just right" for the team.

This year, if the law of averages starts to balance out a bit, we will be happy Hoosiers when it's all said and done.

How come when it comes to "the law" of averages, Indiana football channels Judas Priest?
