Peter Flaherty - Baseball America

Today's #SaturdaySleeper is OF Nick Mitchell (@IndianaBase).
Mitchell makes his way to Bloomington after a two-year standout career at Western Illinois. After an excellent Freshman campaign, Mitchell had a breakout summer in the Northwoods League to the tune of a .372/.472/.531 slash line with 24 XBH (13 2B, 8 3B, 49 RBIs, and 39 BB to just 24 Ks.

Last spring, Mitchell was a First Team All-Summit League selection after hitting .354/.454/.568 with 27 XBH (17 2B), 24 RBIs, and more BB (33) than Ks (25). He then proceeded to enjoy an All-Star summer on the Cape in which he hit .258/.354/.381 with 8 XBH and 10 RBIs.

Mitchell has a small, compact frame at 5'9" and 180-lbs. Crouched stance in the box with a strong base. Medium-high handset. Short, direct swing with a minimal load and small stride. Present hand speed. Flat bat path and line-drive oriented stroke that is geared towards spraying the ball all over the yard.

He has an advanced approach that pairs nicely with his plus bat-to-ball skills. During the school season, Mitchell boasted an impressive IZ contact rate of 94%, while during the Cape season his IZ contact rate was 92% (including 94% against FB). Overall chase rate was also sub-20%. Mitchell's comfort level in the box is evident, and he has sound pitch recognition skills. While his power is below average, Mitchell's hit tool is a comfortable 55.

Mitchell profiles defensively as a LF professionally. He has quick feet with good route running skills, and his feel for the game is apparent. A plus runner who is a problem-causer on the bases, one can expect to find Mitchell's fingerprints all over the box score night in and night out.

You're betting on Mitchell's ability to hit and even with the lack of power, he projects as a 7th-11th round pick this July.
