Emmitt Holt

Recommended Posts

I really really like Emmitt Holt, and I'm pleased to hear that he's doing well.  He has such an old school game, and what I really noticed last year about him is the lack of Freshman mistakes on the floor.  Rarely did he make a bad pass or not make a cut.  I'm excited about his progress and interested to see if he and Thomas Bryant can get some run together at the same time, after all they both know each other from their time in New York.  I hate to compare players, but I'd like to see Emmitt go the way of a Brandon Dawson type of player from Mich St.  They're about the same size and I don't think it's unreasonable to think that Emmitt could develop into a very valuable defensive player.  If he gets a perimeter game this year, than look out.  We are gonna be so good this year!

If you watch any of his high school film he showed a nice stroke from 15 feet.

We have to remember he was playing totally out of position last season

.I really think he could play at the 4 with Bryant and turn last years weakness into a strength.

CTC just has to relent on the notion that small ball is the only way to play.

I agree, Woody.  I just hope that Crean won't be afraid to get away from small ball.  I almost think that this year with only 4 guards on the roster that we'll have to play 2 or 3 forwards on the floor with 2 guards.  With Rob Johnson really being our only backup point guard, I can see him being our 6th man in certain situations.  If that ever occurs, then i'd really like to see Emmitt slide in and be a starter in the frontcourt with Thomas Bryant, and then we roll with Troy, James jr, and Yogi.   I really like the idea of Emmitt getting more run with the starters because he can play Defense and give us more size.  I just don't think we can play so small again like we did last year, and I think that Emmitt is the guy that will benefit if Crean chooses to go bigger.  Some will say start Collin to stretch the floor, and I can see that too, but Emmitt is a far better defender in my opinion.

A lot of IU fans shared that sentiment, Steeler.  You could tell after a few games of watching both Hanner and Emmitt play, that Emmitt was the better "basketball player."  He may not have had the huge vertical, but he got open, cut to the rim, got rebounds, moved his feet on defense, he just looked like a better coached and more natural basketball player.  And that's not me taking a cheap shot at Hanner, just how I feel about Emmitt's game.

Holt should have been out there a lot more than HMP last season. Great to hear he's extending his range (or perfecting it if it was already there). Also will be interested to see what a summer in the weight room will do to his body. Hopefully a little more explosiveness to finish stronger at the rim with some dunks.

He's a fan favorite, he's a bruiser down low, he'll bang with the big boys, and has one of the strongest work ethics on the team. It's just a matter if we go 3 guards and Williams at the 4 or yogi JBJ Troy and Emmitt. All assuming TB starts at the 5.

I was confused reading an article about an interview Crean did on ESPNU. The written article mentioned Crean talking about using a 3 guard lineup and then saying we need to be bigger and correct a physical shortfall we had this year.

When I listened to the interview, I heard something different. Crean mentioned it was important to be 2 deep at every position with little fall off when you sub.  He talked about using a 3 guard lineup to attack and not out of necessity.  I hope this means he might start 3 guards and willing to sub in a forward like Holt or Hartman to play with Bryant or Bielfeldt. I hope the 2 guard lineup is used more often. We will need our forwards to be able to shoot from outside and inside for Crean to use them with a post player.

I am hearing the things we hear every summer about players making big improvements.  Too many times we hear that only to discover very little change.  Bryant and Holt are reported to be shooting well away from the basket.  I saw Bryant make several 3's in the Derby Classic. I don't mind this as long as we have another player in the post that can score or rebound.
