Lake County, Ilinois All-Area Team

Justin Smith Stevenson - Smith, the two-time Daily Herald player of the year, brought high-flying basketball to Lake County. One of the most prolific dunkers in the area's recent history, the 6-foot-7 Smith became known for dunking during his sophomore year and has kept that reputation going. He dunked six times in a game against Crete-Monee this season, and dozens of times altogether. But dunking isn't the only impressive part of Smith's game. He has great range for his size and is a threat from 3-point territory. He can also handle the ball and of course, drive and pound inside. Smith averaged 21 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season. He connected on 55 percent of his shots. "Justin has shown remarkable growth as a player and as a leader during the course of his four years on varsity," Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose said. "He has expanded his game significantly each season as well as his leadership skills." Smith will continue his career next season at Indiana.

We're still listed as his college.

All-Area Boys Basketball First Team: Justin Smith, Stevenson

College: Indiana

Star quality: The 6-foot-7 Smith averaged 21.7 points and 10 rebounds for a Patriots team that went 22-6 overall and won the North Suburban Conference by going 12-2 in league play. A high flier who can finish at the basket, Smith had 16 double-doubles (points and rebounds) this season. His top performances included a 30-point, 13-rebound effort in a win over Zion-Benton on Dec. 3 and a 25-point, 15-rebound performance in a win over Crete-Monee at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic on Dec. 28. Smith was an Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A/4A all-state first-team selection and an Associated Press Class 4A second-team all-state choice. Smith, a Buffalo Grove resident, significantly expanded his game and leadership skills throughout his career, according to Stevenson assistant Paul Swan. Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose said: "Justin is a top-notch player who has incredible ability. I see him soaring to higher heights in college."

Just read an article about the Derby Classic that he is playing in this weekend and his quote was that he reaffirmed his commitment to IU.... I hadn't heard anything about him and had just assumed no news was good news as far as him not asking out of LOI etc... but this is confirmation which is better than my assumption!!!! :)

Welcome Justin and lets see you do your thing this weekend!
